As mentioned in a previous post John Pratt was a very successful jockey in the 18th century and returned to his home village of Askrigg in Yorkshire to open a coaching inn. His love for horses continued and he became the Master of the Askrigg Harriers, which was a local hunting group. He also bred racehorses and allegedly built the Lodge Yard in Askrigg to stable his beasts in 1752. However, there is another theory that a Joseph Lodge who was a local brewer built the stabling block, a substantial claim as he would have needed horses in order to deliver his beer. Approach is through an arched coaching opening where you open out into a stabling yard with once stables and tack rooms etc but now holiday lodges. The buildings are Grade II listed as is a wall which runs from the stable block, Lodge Yard, to the Lodge, and doorway to the Lodge. In the gorgeous Yorkshire village of Askrigg, UK you will find the Kings Arms which is Grade II listed. John Pratt was an accomplished racehorse jockey and the first ‘common man’ to become a member of the jockey club, which was founded in 1752. He made his wealth in horse racing, riding racehorses particularly at Newmarket where on one day he rode 11 races in the single day which would have been 88 miles. The pic I have shown is Pratt sat aside a horse called ‘Gimcrack’ a most successful horse winning 28 of his 36 races. Pratt came from the area of Askrigg and decided to build this inn in 1767 as a coaching inn, 3 stories high with a stone steps mounting block to the side of the door. Pratt also became the Master of the Askrigg Harriers, keeping hunting horses and a pack of hounds nearby and breeding racehorses, so all of his life was devoted to the equine beast. Whitechapel Bell 🔔 foundry There had been bell casting in London’s east end ever since the time of Geoffrey Chaucer (1340’s-1400) when he lived in Aldgate. The Whitechapel bell foundry was founded in 1570. The site in the pictures was established in 1738, but before hand the same site was a coaching inn called the Artichoke Inn - which was gutted in the great fire of 1666. The company evolved and would change ownership several times: Lester, Pack and Chapman -1738-1818 Mears- 1818-1865 Mears and Stainbank- 1865-1968 Whitechapel bell foundry- 1968-2017 (when it closed.) During WWII- the bell foundry helped the war effort by making parts for planes and submarines. It also had the job of replacing the many church bells destroyed during the Blitz. How gorgeous is this! ✍️ We love a bit of history and The Crown certainly has centuries of of that! The Crown is Grade ll Listed and was built as a posting house in the mid 18th century! It was a venue where coach services (mostly using the Great North Road, of which Bawtry High Street was part) stopped for the horses to be changed and the passengers to be refreshed. Posting houses were so-called because they served as a “post office” of their day, with the Post Master usually resident there and the coaches carrying the mail. Horses could also be rented out. The coach entrance of the Crown can be seen to the right of this drawing, and it accessed a loading area and stabling facilities at the rear of the hotel. Some of the stables and other out buildings were later demolished and the extra bedrooms were built! The hotel reputedly has associations with Robin Hood and Dick Turpin. It became Bawtry’s main coaching inn after Thomas Fisher moved his business from the Swan, across the road, to Scrooby Top around 1780. The Red Lion Hotel in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, UK could possibly date back to the 17th or even 16th century, but the first recording of it was in 1715 where it was recorded as a coaching inn. The building we see today was built in 1770 incorporating sections of the previous building such as the west wall chimney stack and is now Grade II listed. Inns were built in this area to accommodate the lead mine workers, travellers on the pack horse route and the coaches travelling on the turnpiked road. Not only was this a coaching inn but also a post office and towns excise office during the 19th century. Passing through the coach arch there were extensive stabling and accommodation for the grooms. In fact, it was the old coach arch which caused many an accident and one poor fellows death in the 1700’s. As the horse approached the arch, one can only presume that they became excited over their future feed and rest and so bolted through unexpected by the rider who did not duck in time and was beheaded by the act.
