Following the story of the history of the Wakkerstroom NG Church.... Photos of the original church, and a current photo taken in April 2024 The church that Ackerman came to was on the site of the current church hall, on the corner of Engelbrecht st and Market st, now van Riebeeck. In 1861 a commission had been set up to build 4 walls with a thatch roof. It was completed by 1863. That meant, that at the time of Ackerman’s arrival, there was a building but no parsonage. He and his wife stayed with various congregation members “kuier” “kuier”, so to speak, until two rooms were added onto the building for later use as a vestry and office. This cramped space was where they moved into. According to tradition, the church building was a multipurpose building; and during the cold winter months when snow lay on the ground the villagers were said to herd sheep and cattle into the building. It is minuted that in August 1869, so much damage was done by the animals that 39 pounds was collected to do the repairs to the building. Then only 2 days later, at another meeting they decided to build a new church, and a building committee was nominated, headed by General Piet Joubert with AA o Reiley, F Jansen van Rensburg and P Jansen van Rensburg. Only in 1874, was a church built on the foundations of the original 4 walled church. In 1879 the walls were raised by 3 foot and the thatch was removed and replaced with zinc roof sheets. This may have been when the extra rooms for Ds Ackerman were added. The building was consecrated on 3 July 1880. By the 1900s, after the big church had been built, the building fell into disrepair and the youth of the church undertook to demolish and rebuild the church, in the same shape, to be used by the youth. They employed master builder Mathinus Breytenbach, and was known as the Jongelingsaal. Окончил Санкт-Петербургскую Академию художеств по классу архитектуры и в начале 1880-х годов приехал в Симбирск. Работал архитектором, землемером, оценщиком недвижимости, занимался экспертизой строящихся зданий. Более сорока лет посвятил педагогике: преподавал черчение и рисование в ремесленном училище графа Орлова-Давыдова и ещё ряде учебных заведений. Вёл и общественную деятельность: был гласным городской думы, казначеем Симбирского общества христианского милосердия. Этот дом архитектор спроектировал для себя и своей семьи в стиле плотницкой готики. Строительство начато в 1895 году, нынешний вид здание обрело в начале XX столетия. В Ульяновске на ул. Льва Толстого, 57 сохранился созданный Саввой Ниловичем также в готическом стиле дом с воротами надворного советника Прушакевича (1895). Ему посвящена одна из моих предыдущих публикаций. Одни из нынешних долевых собственников здания водят сюда экскурсии и пытаются собрать средства на реставрацию. P.S. Не пытайтесь снежной зимой самостоятельно найти этот дом! Тот ещё трэш. Официальный адрес не соответствует местоположению. Можно долго плутать, а почти у цели - глубокие сугробы и занесённая слегка заледеневшим снегом железная лестница к Спуску Степана Разина. In a high-Dutch document recently found while tidying church records, in 2024; translated by Dutch speaking Wakkerstroom resident, Rita Wiesseman, it was discovered that Ds Ackerman, who had died in 1916, had been reburied in 1919. The document found laid out the details of what needed to be done to move the remains. Originally Ackerman’s body was embalmed and transported to Volksrust by train and buried in the old part of the Wakkerstroom cemetery. As the first entries in the cemetery records started in 1916, there were just a couple of records, so it is unknown exactly where his remains were buried. But obviously after his 41 years of service, it was decided to build the memorial in the church grounds. The instructions were: to dig 2 graves, and line one with plastered cement, while immediately closing in the other with dirt. This was being prepared for later use by Ds Ackerman’s wife. On Fri 28 March 1919 the coffin with the remains of late Ds Ackerman were to be placed on a carriage, and exposed to fresh air for 3 days, but without the sun shining on coffin. They needed to take care that it would not be damaged. The coffin and the grips had to be disinfected according to instructions by the local doctor of the time, Dr Brugman. There was to be a new coffin, paid for by the church council. On 11 April the remains were to be transferred to the new coffin, and sealed (soldered). The reburial ceremony was to take place on 12th April from 10am. A stage/platform was to be erected 2 feet high, 6 feet long and 4 feet wide for people to stand on when the coffin was lowered. Once lowered, the grave was to be immediately closed with soil and covered with corrugated iron sheets. The document was signed 27 March 1919, and witnesses responsible for the reburial were H Sussenthuler & P Theron. FOUNTAIN INN SC circa 1886 name derives from the phase "inn with a fountain." A Post Office was opened called Fountion Inn in 1832 just south of town, but the town wasn't established til the construction of the Carolina & Western Carolina Train Depot.
