Hi, this is a Colugo, aka Flying Lemur, although it glides, not flies, and is more closely related to primates. We were treated to sighting this gorgeous animal on a night walk in one of the lush forests in Singapore. The colugos are nocturnal herbivores, hopping up tall trees in search of leaves and fruit ... they are not good climbers as they have no thumbs. Their skin membranes from front paws to hind toes to tip of their tails allow them to glide over 70m from tree to tree without losing height. The Colugo or otherwise known as the Sunda Flying Lemur (Galeopterus variegatus) captured by photographer @bucketboywithlens However they are not a lemur or primate. These unique arboreal mammals found in South East Asia move by gliding through the air with a large membrane of skin that is connected between their limbs. They are the most efficient gliding mammal, traveling up to 70 meters between trees, though can travel as far as 150 meters! Although their young develops in the the womb like most mammals, they raise their newborns similar to marsupials. The underdeveloped baby will cling to its mother’s belly for about the first 6 months of life. To hold the baby in place, the mother secures it with her tail and wraps her extra skin around it. In the last photos we see the mother and fully grown baby, almost ready to move on it’s own. More active at night, these creatures live off of a diet of leaves, fruits, flowers and tree sap. The baby clings onto its mum's belly & it's supported by the patagium & tail. Colugos are not marsupials therefore they do not have a pouch for the baby but rather the baby just clings on tight & can even be seen from underside when the mama colugo is gliding. SUNDA COLUGOS - Chồn bay (Grey Morph) Sunda Colugos are distinctive leaf-eating mammals with membranes connecting legs and tail, enabling them to glide from tree to tree. These gliding membranes have evolved independently from those of other gliding mammals such as flying squirrels or marsupial gliding possums, or from the wings of bats. The gliding membranes are the most extensive of any gliding mammal, connecting from the neck to the toes on both fore and hind legs and to the tip of the tail. Recorded gliding up to 136m between trees, losing only 12m in height in the process. A mainly nocturnal species, spending the day usually at rest in a tree. El colugo de filipinas (Cynocephalus volans) es una de las dos especies de dermopteros o lemures voladores que existen actualmente, la otra es el colugo malayo (Galeopterus variegatus) (aunque se cree que pueden existir otras especies como el java y de borneo). Es nocturno y tiene ojos grandes y frontales que le permiten calcular la distancia mientras planean entre los árboles en busca de hojas tiernas y frutos en la noche.
