Finally managed to see a wild Sunda colugo @ Sunda Flying Lemur ... and we were fortunate that this mama was carrying a little baby! Interestingly it was chilling in one of the trees along a pathway outside an exhibit at the zoo. Fun facts to correct the surrounding commentary in the video: They are not flying foxes more so flying lemurs. They are more closely related to primates. They are not marsupials. Their large eyes have strong night vision and depth perception—both of which help it move between trees at night. Yes, they are nocturnal. Baby Colugos spend the first six months of life clinging to their mother's belly. The mother colugo curls her tail and folds her patagium (fur covered membrane) into a warm, secure, quasipouch to protect and transport her young. Last week, I came across a colugo that was flying actively during the day. I was so engrossed trying to catch it in flight that I completely did not notice that it had suffered a huge bite on its body! I had assumed it was a juvenile colugo learning to fly, hence the active daytime behavior. A more reasonable assumption might be that it had suffered an attack from a bird of prey, and it was trying to escape and find cover. At one point of time, it even flew towards us onlookers, and it was within an arm's reach. At the end of the day, this is part and parcel of survival in nature. The Colugo or otherwise known as the Sunda Flying Lemur (Galeopterus variegatus) captured by photographer @bucketboywithlens However they are not a lemur or primate. These unique arboreal mammals found in South East Asia move by gliding through the air with a large membrane of skin that is connected between their limbs. They are the most efficient gliding mammal, traveling up to 70 meters between trees, though can travel as far as 150 meters! Although their young develops in the the womb like most mammals, they raise their newborns similar to marsupials. The underdeveloped baby will cling to its mother’s belly for about the first 6 months of life. To hold the baby in place, the mother secures it with her tail and wraps her extra skin around it. In the last photos we see the mother and fully grown baby, almost ready to move on it’s own. More active at night, these creatures live off of a diet of leaves, fruits, flowers and tree sap. Big surprise: While shooting tiny insects, we discovered a flying lemur mother and child (photo 2) in a tree above. Was walking along the driving route into Rifle Range when I spotted a lone coconut tree, and a lump on it. Turns out this mama colugo was just plonked right on this bare tree, literally in the middle of nowhere (see last pic). The Sunda Flying Lemur / Malayan flying lemur / Kubung (Local name), Galeopterus variegatus it's native throughhout southeast Asia ranging from Myanmar, Thailand, southern Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The pattern is mottled grayish or brownish on its upper parts and is paler below. This species do not actually fly, but glide from one tree to the next. Kubung has no wings, but only has patagium, a membrane that streches from their forelimbs to their tail. They are strictly arboreal, living in treetops in lowland tropical rainforest. In indonesia you can find this species in Sumatra, Kalimantan and western Java. They are mainly nocturnal. Based on IUCN Galeopterus variegatus is listed as Least Concern with last assessed on 2008. Trend population on this species is decreasing, probably declining due to habitat loss. There is also annotation from IUCN to this species for updating the assessment. If you look up the mamalia evolutionary tree, on a main miorder branch called Primatomorpha, which splits into two smaller branches - one of the branches - in the order of Primates, you can find us humans, together with around 200 other species. On the lateral branch of the tree is Dermoptera - currently containing only two species - the Philippine and Sunda Colugos. ... If you look up this particular tree, you can see this female Sunda Colugo. In a Tarantino-esque, Non-linear story telling format, these photos were taken two days apart. Picture 3 & 4 were taken first, followed by 1,2 & 5. Photo Commentary: PIC 3 & 4: I went into the nearby jungle next to Bubbles Resort, looking for the colugo and found this female. With the help of the local boatmen & resort crew who were resting nearby (without them I never would have spotted it). It was in a hyper-aware state, despite my best efforts to "drop aggro", by hiding under a roof, using trees to block direct sightline... she stared at me wherever I went. I felt that she felt very threatened by my presence, so I just took a few bursts & left it alone. PIC 1 & 2: Two days later, I found both male and female on a same tree trunk. The male was about a metre immediately above the female in Pic 5. Notice the more vibrant fur colour and pattern. Featured in 1 & 2 is the female. If you look carefully, there is a bump under the skin of the arm -this momma colugo is harbouring a baby colugo. Colugos rear their young all marsupial-like: Spending just 60 days in gestation, they are born very tiny and in a very under developed form. The mothers will fold their flying membranes inwards, towards the chest, where a tiny newborn will nurse & shelter in. Baby colugos will largely spend the first 6 months of their lives here & do not reach maturity until 2-3 years after birth. This slow reproductive period, coupled with rapid habitat loss puts the continued survival of colugos at risk. I waited for the baby colugo to pop its head out from under momma's wing, but it didn't. Maybe next time.

A flash of red between two trees by the beach made me leave my lunch and run for my room - for my camera. Without visually confirming it first, I knew it was the resident Sunda Flying Lemur at @bubblesresort Despite also known as the Malayan Flying Lemur or Malayan Colugo, they're neither lemurs nor do they fly, but glide from tree to tree using a kite-shaped membrane extending from the neck to each limb, up to the fingers, toes and nails. Strictly arboreal, they are quite defenseless when on the ground. Usually active at night, this one was seen gliding from tree to tree at noon! The last time I spotted these my camera ISO was in the 5-digit range, but this time it was a clean 500, resulting in a clear, crispy image of this male specimen. In the few days I was in Perhentian Islands, I saw this colugo several times, including the female one, who was carrying at least one young - but there were no opportunities to photograph the pup, since the mother keeps them protected under the flying membrane. They are extremely aware of their surroundings. Hihii this is Ziggy. Ziggy is The Sunda flying lemur. The first design is from a year or so ago but anyways, wanted to rework with this one tho so yeah. Ziggy is a daredevil by nature. He enjoys extreme sports from skydiving to mountain climbing and more. He is like this early 2000's jackass with too much energy and not enough self-preservation instinct. The only thing that stops him from doing his thing is broken bones or some other greater injury, but as soon as he is slightly recovered he is back in business. Ziggy's friends have given him a nickname iron-bones not because his bones are strong but for the amount of metal he has in his body for all the fixed broken bones he has had. The colugo is one of the most interesting and unique gliding mammals found in our forests. Their body is covered with a large membrane of skin, or patagium, much like a bat. However their fur-covered membrane extends from their face to the tips of its claws and tail, they even have webbed toes and fingers. This beautifully evolved body gives colugos the ability to glide an incredible distance up to 70 meters from tree to tree and has earned the colugo the title of the most accomplished mammalian glider on earth. They are completely arboreal, nocturnal, shy, and solitary animals found in tropical rainforests in South East Asia. Their large eyes allow for strong night vision and depth perception and they have a set of long tiny teeth much like a comb that allow them to clean parasites from their fur. It’s always a joy, meeting a creature you didn’t know existed, in the wild and in the flesh. This is a Sunda Flying Lemur, or Malayan Flying Lemur, or Malayan Colugo. Despite its name, this is neither a Lemur, nor does it fly. Strictly arboreal (tree-dweller), it is able to glide from tree to tree in search of its favourite food types - flowers, leaves, shoots and fruits. It is also nocturnal, making this particular one an early riser since it is already out and about when the sun had only just started to set. Despite not moving much, I find at least this one to be full of character. The bulging eyes and tight lips, like its dreading the long day (night) ahead.
