The Sunda flying lemur, neither flies nor is a lemur, so it’s probably better known by its other name Malayan colugo… although these ones were found in Singapore. She called me the torturous training buddy.....😅😅but with just 70 more days to go and just about 9 more weekends to train seriously....got to work a bit harder. One hour or brisk walking (about 5km) on Saturday, followed by three rounds of up and down Bukit Timah continuously in about 2 hours this morning.....she is probably 40% ready for the Fuji Summit Challenge... "Near-Human Potential" I have noticed that when we marvel at animal abilities with certain things such as movement, biological weapons, and behaviour, we do this from the human perspective, which undermines our own ability, intelligence. This is typically done to many animals that are quite distantly related from us, consider comparing our running ability to a cheetah's, our swimming to a dolphin's, and our eyesight to a bug's. However, there are some animals out there that are much closer to us than you would think that have gained special adaptations, and make us ponder why we never gained those abilities ourselves? One of the best examples was spotted further into my first night walk experience in Singapore, as @terence_wildlife and I continued walking along the old Upper Thomson Road. He had told me about a very often-seen animal, which I knew I had to shoot while I was there, and sure enough, we found at least five of them; the Sunda Colugo. One in particular was so comfortable in our presence that it allowed me to go close enough to photograph it reaching for a leaf to eat! There are only two extant species of colugos, with another being in the Philippines, and believe it or not, these non-primate animals are in the same clade as primates, or in other words, they are our sisters in the mirorder of the Primatomorpha! Sunda Colugos look almost nothing like primates though, with a squirrel-like snout, HUGE flaps of skin between their legs helping them glide 150 metres or more, and long arm bones under those flaps that look like a weird flesh skeleton! Cynocephalus volans (Philippine Colugo). First time I have seen these guys and cannot believe I saw four of these at Bohol. Travelling sketches, First one is the Muntjac deer, originally from China but you can see them wondering through the UK as I did in Norfolk. They were introduced in Bedfordshire end of 19th century beginning the 20th century. The Muntjac are unusual deers they are small like same size as a medium dog small, makes have backwards antlers and canine teeth, similar to the Chinese water deer that I also spotted in Norfolk on the train to Norwich. Second sketch a mumma hanging like a pouch with her young nesting is a flying lemur, from Southeast Asia. COLUGO mother carries her infant using her membrane with which she can glide in the air for up to 200 meters, longer than any other gliding mammal. The Sunda colugo (Galeopterus variegatus) is an elusive mammal residing in the treetops of Southeast Asian tropical rainforests where it navigates through the canopy by gliding. Active at night and solitary, they can be spotted occasionally during the day while resting, clinging motionless and camouflaged high up on tree trunks, though they also favor more secluded tree holes. Only two species of colugo are known to exist, making up the entire mammalian order of Dermoptera, evolutionarily most closely related to primates (but not primates at all as their misleading other common name of “flying lemur” suggests) and whose etymology means skin (derma) + wing (pteron). Finally managed to see a wild Sunda colugo @ Sunda Flying Lemur ... and we were fortunate that this mama was carrying a little baby! Interestingly it was chilling in one of the trees along a pathway outside an exhibit at the zoo. Fun facts to correct the surrounding commentary in the video: They are not flying foxes more so flying lemurs. They are more closely related to primates. They are not marsupials. Their large eyes have strong night vision and depth perception—both of which help it move between trees at night. Yes, they are nocturnal. Baby Colugos spend the first six months of life clinging to their mother's belly. The mother colugo curls her tail and folds her patagium (fur covered membrane) into a warm, secure, quasipouch to protect and transport her young. Certainly a rare sighting, especially during the day! The Sunda Colugo (Galeopterus variegatus) was seen gliding and landing on a large tree along the Muda river not too far from Earth Lodge. Not only did we see the adult Colugo, we also notice a little baby peeking out from the mother's underside. A rare treat! Although the IUCN classifies them as Least Concern, they are not usually easily seen.
