#Selftape story time… This past week I was out of town for just a few days, helping my partner road trip home from Florida after his contract finished, to bring his car back to NYC. 99% of the time, when I travel anywhere for any length of time, I bring my backdrop and a small phone stand with me, in case I get a last minute self tape request. But this time? I hadn’t gotten a request in awhile and was feeling a bit discouraged by that fact, so I didn’t bring my backdrop. And I thought, “it’ll be fine, it’s only a few days so even if I do get a request, I’ll have time to film once I get home...” Right? WRONG! 😂 Praise be to the Universe—I got a great, last min. commercial audition request that was right up my alley…with an incredibly quick turnaround 😬 Welp! So I did what we actors do best: think on our feet and figure our shit out! lol 🤪 Before hitting the road that morning, I picked an outfit (only had 2 to choose from), I managed to get my phone set up ok (thanks to the hotel ironing board and coffee maker, plus a box of wheat thins 😆), and threw open the drapes to get some natural night. The only wall I could use to film against was pretty far from the light, so I still had to do some editing after I was done to make it look brighter and more clear, but the moral of the story is: I DID IT! 🙌 To make a long story long 🙈…this was a wonderful reminder to not let my ego run the show! To keep on preparing as if all the self tape requests and bookings are coming my way, to expect the best. 👉 Actor friends! I know we all have stories like these…what’s one of yours?? John Witherspoon John Witherspoon was an American character actor and stand-up comedian who performed in various television shows and films. Witherspoon played Willie Jones in the Friday series, and starred in films such as Hollywood Shuffle (1987), Boomerang (1992), The Five Heartbeats (1991), and Vampire in Brooklyn (1995). In addition, Witherspoon made appearances on television shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1994), The Wayans Bros. (1995–1999), The Tracy Morgan Show (2003), Barnaby Jones (1973), The Boondocks (2005–2014), and Black Jesus (2014–2019). He wrote a film, From the Old School, in which he played an elderly working man who tries to prevent a neighborhood convenience store from being developed into a strip club. Witherspoon worked occasionally as a model. During the 1960s and 1970s, he began his stand-up comedy career. He had many friends in the business, including Tim Reid (while he was working on WKRP in Cincinnati and The Richard Pryor Show), Robin Williams (also on The Richard Pryor Show), Jay Leno, and David Letterman. Witherspoon performed in many feature films (usually comedies), including Friday (and its sequels Next Friday and Friday After Next), Hollywood Shuffle, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, Bird, Vampire in Brooklyn, and The Meteor Man. Witherspoon was also known for his over-the-top characters in films such as House Party, in which he played an irritated neighbor who is repeatedly woken up by the party, and Boomerang with Eddie Murphy, where he plays Mr. Jackson, the ill-mannered father of Murphy’s best friend. His fame drove him to become a public supporter of civil rights and an opponent of the Vietnam War. He was also among the first blacks with their names on the ballot to run for the presidency in the United States in 1968. In his later years, he focused more on health and fitness matters. Unfortunately Witherspoon passed on October 29, 2019, at age 77. The Play That Goes Wrong was a blast! The cast, crew, and team were all stars! The show broke box office records for the theatre and almost sold out every night! I loved the ad lib moments that my role, Robert, had written into the script. Being able to improvise and do something different every night put me right in my element! (My intentionally large, dramatic, and spontaneous death sequence was especially fun. I was timed at taking 5 minutes on my solo death scene one night… Whoops! Sorry not sorry! 🤪) I was also challenged (since I am a Meisner trained actor who thrives in spontaneity) to keep the choreography of the more dangerous and technical scenes consistent. Thank you to everyone involved and everyone who came to see it! I love all of our director’s notes in the program, and agree with the points he makes. It was a beautiful night celebrating @imheathergraham for her masterful writing, directing and acting in a film that wins at the too rare (as in we need more!) combination of being heartfelt and humorous. 🤣 The shared laughing out loud in the sold out beautiful escapist 2,000-seat @arlingtontheatre theater provided the best kind of feedback. Ella was right at home on the carpet (her first official premiere experience outside of her own short films she’d made), in front of the cameras, doing interviews, mingling and not only being on stage, but speaking to the full house. (That video to come). The final image isn’t from a pro, though.
