Tonight - kind of in honor of director Elaine May, who turned 92 last week, and kind of because I’ve been wanting to see it for a while anyway and it’s leaving Criterion Channel at the end of May, it’s 1987’s most famous bomb, Ishtar! But like so many films that failed to make money, whether it’s actually good or not is an entirely different matter, and it’s undergone considerable reappraisal since being the butt of a million jokes, including making critic Jonathan Rosenbaum’s list of 1000 great films. Having only seen May’s Mikey and Nicky of her other directorial efforts, I don’t know exactly what she brings to the table but, but as writer when she reunited with Mike Nichols in the 90s she did solid work that I probably need to revisit. The main complaint about this seems to be that there’s little plot and what is there is ridiculous, and Hoffman and Beatty just run wild for the length (and given the egos involved there and May’s background in the stage I can see that happening) but I’m not huge on plots anyway and I like both of the leads (plus co-lead Isabelle Adjani and several of the supporting actors, especially Carol Kane and Charles Grodin). Also, the great Vittorio Storaro shot it. Challenge Nr. 18: Ein Road Movie “Midnight Run - Fünf Tage bis Mitternacht” (1988) Blu-ray FSK 12 Der Film “Midnight Run - Fünf Tage bis Mitternacht” ist ein rasanter, waschechter 80er-Jahre Symbiont aus Buddy-Komödie und Road Movie mit einigen Thrillerelementen. Ich wurde durch die Bank gut unterhalten. So eine von mir bisher nicht entdeckte Perle des Gute-Laune-Actionkinos hatte ich gar nicht erwartet. Wendungsreich und mit einer schönen Message garniert, begibt sich das ungleiche Duo, bestehend aus Robert De Niro und Charles Grodin per Zug, Auto und Flugzeug, auf einen Roadtrip quer durch die Vereinigten Staaten. Gejagt von FBI, Mafia und weiteren zwielichtigen Gesellen, versuchen sie an ihr Ziel zu gelangen, wobei De Niro zudem immer mit den listenreichen Fluchtversuchen Grodins zu kämpfen hat. Yaphet Kotto spielt den immer wieder hereingelegten FBI-Ermittler - die beiden sind ihren Verfolgern halt immer einen Schritt voraus. Der Wortwitz wirkt nicht gewollt aufgesetzt, die komischen Momente zünden. Gegen Ende gehen in einer epischen Verfolgungsjagd noch ordentlich viele Polizeiwagen zu Bruch und man atmet auf, wenn schlussendlich “das Gute” siegt und De Niro am Ende der Reise belohnt wird für die Wandlung seiner Perspektive. Die ungleichen Typen haben sich einander angenähert und respektieren einander. Und vielleicht keimt zuletzt doch noch so etwas wie Freundschaft zwischen den beiden auf. Watched #TheHeartbreakKid (1972) : Marriage: a gift or a curse? This sweet little film will force you to think about youth-time mindsets of the same. Elaine May's The Heartbreak Kid is one of the most popular comedies of 70s, but I'd like to make it clear in the beginning that it's "overrated." Why, what, and how? I don't want to get into those useless discussions. But I'd rather discuss what good things this film has. I don't know why people like it so much as a comedy; I did not find any hilarious gags here. Instead, I found some light-hearted moments and desperate proportions that brought a sweet little smile to my face. I was grinning, not giggling. The film is about a young boy who has a second thought about his marriage on his honeymoon. He meets a young and beautiful college girl and falls in love with her. That's just not an infatuation, but a serious thing for him now. He decides to quit the marriage and get married to the new girl. As you can see, it's a very thin and simple plot. There is nothing to excite or entertain you. The comedy isn't great either. But I must say that its goodness lies in its simplicity. Moreover, the last 10 minutes of climax teach you a lot about life and your decisions. We have seen Clark Gable deny "dishonest money" to the girl's father in #ItHappenedOneNight (1934), which actually turned out to be a test. The same goes here, and the hero has the same principles. The very next moment, he is married, but what has that brought him? Emptiness. I was 10 once, he says, recalling his childhood dreams. That one scene is enough to define the entire context of the film. If you can understand that, you have a scene to remember, if not a film. The actors have done their jobs well, and the director has tried his best with the lukewarm script. I just think it shouldn't be called a good "comedy" because the film doesn't fulfill the requirements of this genre. Better call it a good drama or a youth drama.
