We supported @Glyndebourne with preparations for Festival 2024, celebrating 90 years of Glyndebourne in collaboration with one of Britain’s leading artists, @ConradShawcross RA. Together they have produced a bold presentation of visual artworks upon the grounds, with a rooted connection to music and sound. 🎭✨ The assistance of @Mtec0 involved the transport and installation of nine large outdoor sculptures titled 'Paradigms', seen together for the first time. The sculptures are associated with works on paper featured in the Archive Gallery, and 14 bronze sculptures displayed in the Old Green Room. 'Expansion Fields' presents both new and existing bodies of work from Shawcross, encapsulating over 20 years of practice and research into ideas around the creation of the universe and its fundamental principles. 🌌

Brief intro extract from the Catherine Loewe @loewecontemporary essay and research written for the exhibition and catalogue. ‘Tête-à-Tête’, ‘ 🦪🌵’ !! - conrad and I energies and responses are very evident and simple here lol …’’ Vasari did not include any couples and only four female artists merited a mention under the prevailing conditions of a patriarchal society that dictated that women rarely had the opportunity to become professional artists, let alone be celebrated for it.   We know little about artist couples until the 19th century when they emerged to play a key part in the development of avant-garde art that exploded in the 20th century.  These revolutionary couples reflected the shifting structure of both art and society with their unique and often tumultuous love stories. Couples such as Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin, Josef and Anni Albers, Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning, shared similar approaches on a wave of radical thinking in the wake of Cubism, Bauhaus, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism.  The male genius myth meant women’s career were often eclipsed by their more prominent partners, remaining locked in the roles of mistressor muse. Such was the case with Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner and Pablo Picasso and Francoise Gilot - both womenonly now receiving long overdue recognition. Others like Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera, Georgia O’Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz, broke the stereotypical moulds to become more famous than their husbands. In the contemporary era we find a plethora of celebrated artist duos who have had a huge impact on the ever-evolving story of art such as Christo and Jean-Claude, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, Marina Abramovic and Ulay, Gilbert and George, Bharti Kher and Subodh Gupta, Elmgreen and Dragset, John Currin and Rachel Feinstein, Rashid Johnson and Sheri Hovsepian to name but a few… #teteatete #mucciacciagallery #rome #carolinamazzolari #conradshawcross #loewecontemporary

Opening today at the Mucciaccia Gallery, Rome, ‘Tête-à-tête’ is an exhibition curated by Catherine Loewe which explores artist couples. The exhibition brings together eight contemporary artist couples, featuring an array of multi-disciplinary work, including photography, textiles, sculpture, painting and digital art. As the title which refers to the French expression “head to head’ suggests, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the dynamics behind artist relationships, revealed through intimate conversations with them. I will be exhibiting along side my wife, Carolina Mazzolari. 🎨The Hyena Gaze (Spotted Hyena) by Tabitha Witte Charcoal powder, compressed charcoal sticks, black fine liner and white gel pen 🏅Shortlisted for the Sketch for Survival Wildlife 100 Artist of the Year Award 2023 Tabitha was one of three teenage artists making the SFS100 in 2023. Although currently categorised as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, spotted hyena were last assessed back in 2014 with the global population, particularly beyond protected areas, in decline. Hyenas face the same threats as other large predators in Africa (habitat loss andhuman-wildlife conflict) but they are also persecuted for being scavengers, a pest, and are associated with witchcraft in some cultures. Living in a hierarchical clan system, they are actually the most socially-complex large carnivore in Africa and are excellent mothers, and hunters. They play a crucial role in an ecosystem - cleaning up carcasses and reducing the spread of disease. They are fascinating to watch. Submissions for the Sketch for Survival 2024 competition close 30 June - 100 exhibition places are up for grabs. Coming soon — Conrad Shawcross: Expansion Fields opens at @Glyndebourne Festival 2024 on 16 May. As part of its 90-year anniversary celebrations, Glyndebourne has partnered with @ConradShawcross on a presentation of art and sculpture, open to all ticket holders and by appointment. Ahead of the opening, Glyndebourne has just revealed the cover art for the 2024 Glyndebourne Festival Programme Book, featuring Shawcross's Harmonic Carving (Glyndebourne). This work on paper was produced using a harmonograph — a Victorian-era machine that uses swinging pendulums to draw visualisations of movement, which Shawcross adapted to respond to musical chords. The Festival 2024 Programme Book is available on site and from Glyndebourne's online shop — tap the link in bio for more info. - Image: Conrad Shawcross, Harmonic Carving (Glyndebourne), 2024. Manifold sculpture at Moorgate station on bus route 100. This bronze sculpture is by British artist Conrad Shawcross with its full title of Manifold (Major Third) 5:4. It's located outside the Elizabeth line entrance to Moorgate station and is part of the Art on the Underground project. The large bronze sculpture represents a chord falling into silence and is taken from observations of a Victorian pendulum-driven harmonograph (a mechanical apparatus that employs two pendulums that draw the oscillation of a sound wave) to map the complex shape of a specific piano chord that is falling into silence. Mr Shawcross specialises in mechanical sculptures based on philosophical and scientific ideas and is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He was commissioned to make this sculpture as part of the Crossrail Art Programme and it was placed here in September 2023. You can read more about Manifold Major Third 5:4 and other sculptures on my website: www. londonroutemistress.co.uk. My mission is to travel on all TFL's London buses in number order starting from 1. Manifold 5:4 can be found at London Wall/Moorgate station bus stop on route 100. #londonbus #lovelondon #ɪɴsᴛᴀᴘɪᴄ #london #hiddenlondon #bestoftheday #tfl #100 #londonunderground #exploringlondon #bestofthebest #britishhistory #londondecanted #mysecretlondon #transportforlondon #statues #sculpture #bronzesculpture #conradshawcross #manifold #moorgate

Wishing a very happy birthday to @ConradShawcross. On 24 May, the artist will give a Discourse at the Royal Institution (@ri_science) in London. Titled Beyond the Perception Envelope, the Discourse will be an evening of exploration of the interconnectivity between art and science, as both process and practice — and how humanity's insatiable curiosity fuels the development of both fields. Over the course of a three-decade practice, Shawcross has dedicated himself to delving into the intricate depths of human perception, employing a nuanced fusion of geometry, philosophy, and optics. Looking back at ‘Patterns of Absence (Bb36 D10) - Desert beacon’, 2022. This video shows the sculpture back-lit in my studio. Each rendered in blue spectrum, the layering of colours combine and merge with the ever-changing colours of the sky. As the disks incrementally rotate they form patterns within patterns, some reminiscent of raindrops on water, others the murmuration of starlings. I hope this work challenges the senses and questions the extent of our perception envelope. #beacon #patternsofabsence #kineticsculpture #lightworks #artiststudio #conradshawcross #perceptionenvelope 📸 by Richard Ivey

20 years ago ‘Continuum’ (2004) was created as a site-specific installation for the Queen’s House, Greenwich. The piece was conceived in response to the radiant geometry of the Indigo Jone’s floor and the building which sits along the Greenwich Meridian Line. The plywood structure was built out of 144 lapped modular tusks in my bedroom which doubled up as my studio at the time. I regard ‘Continuum’ as a model of time, it’s 12 spiralling loops, each 12 feet high represent an hour of the 12 hour clock or the 12 month year. The piece moves through itself perpetually, creaking and juddering, suggesting an unending journey - reminding us that we are constantly moving through time, constantly revolving but with no coherent beginning middle or end. @royalmuseumsgreenwich #conradshawcross #sculpture #woodwork #kineticsculpture #indigojones #queenshousegreenwich #meridianline #conradshawcross #queenshouse

‘As each viewer gazes upon the shifting surface, strange patterns seem to appear and vanish, new thoughts are triggered and memories recollected all while neural pathways and connections are forged for the first time.’ @ConradShawcross⁣ ⁣ On view in our presentation at Art Basel Hong Kong, Conrad Shawcross’s new wall-based work comprises two slowly counter-rotating discs, both perforated using a mathematical algorithm. A continuation of the artist’s exploration of optics and visual perception, the sum effect allows light to permeate through the voids within their surfaces, producing an effect reminiscent of those experienced in nature, such as the shifting light of the sea.⁣ ⁣ @ArtBasel Hong Kong continues until Sunday 30 March — visit us at Booth 1C28.⁣ ⁣ -⁣ Images: Conrad Shawcross, Patterns of Absence (MS15D18), 2023. I will be showing ‘Patterns of Absence (MS15D18)’ at Art Basel Hong Kong 2024 from Thursday 28th March – Saturday 30th March, on the @victoriamirogallery booth. The two perforated discs of this piece move in counter-rotation, with moments of seemingly randomised alignment and misalignment. The viewer is presented with an image of themselves within the mirrored surface, peppered and dissolved by thousands of absences, becoming part of the work. The sculpture creates intricate patterns of light through the interface of the holes, each disc pierced by a myriad of complex perforations, producing an effect that triggers associations reminiscent of those experienced in nature. #patternsofabsence #lightsculpture #conradshawcross #perforations #kineticsculpture #mirror #rainbow #lightsculpture #lightworks #hongkong #arthongkong #artbaselhongkong

Jonathan Bailey, Joe Lycett, Maggi Hambling, Navot Miller, Curtis Holder, Dominic Skinner, Conrad Shawcross…. We can’t believe how brilliant the lots are for one of the best nights of the year — The Auction at Christie’s in London on 15 April! Scroll through to see just some of the brilliant items and experiences going under the hammer to raise vital funds to support people living with and affected by HIV in the UK. Including ones currently available to bid on via our online auction with @theauctioncollective! Jonathan Bailey, star of Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers and upcoming Wicked, has signed a limited edition silk scarf he designed for Echo NY. About the scarf, Jonathan said: “To me, joy is primary colours and cycling alongside an open vista…” Jonathan’s support follows his leading role in Fellow Travelers, which charts a decades long romance between Tim (played by Jonathan) and Hawk (Matt Bomer) from the 1950s through to the start of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. Jonathan, deservedly, won a Critics Choice Award for his performance. About his donation, Jonathan, said:“Terrence Higgins Trust is an iconic force for good. My time filming Fellow Travelers ignited a determination to support charities that hold, nurture and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ family.” Joe Lycett’s acrylic painting on canvas is called ‘Slags’, which he says “stands out as a particularly remarkable painting that skilfully captures the essence of flowers.” Navot Miller’s Anmar and Denise in Wedding typifies the artist’s use of a vibrant, highly contrasted palette of solid pinks, yellows, blue and greens, and was donated by Miller and Carl Freedman Gallery. Curtis Holder, winner of Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year, will create a line portrait for one lucky bidder. Holder posthumous portrait of Terry Higgins – the first named person to die of an AIDS-related illness – now hands in the National Portrait Gallery. Other lots include tickets to Magic Mike in London and a money-can’t-buy makeup artist experience with MAC Director of Makeup Artist and BBC Glow Up judge Dominic Skinner. ✨ARTIST INTERVIEW✨ Conrad Shawcross doesn’t so much make works about mathematics and science – though he is certainly informed by those disciplines – so much as approach his artistic investigations in a comparable manner, experimenting with concepts, and building on the results in depth over many years as he pursues particular streams of thought. Our visual fine arts editor, Paul Carey-Kent, caught up with Shawcross to discuss three long-running aspects of his practise: his use of the tetrahedron; the combination of time, light, and shadow; and Shawcross’s rope-making machines, including ‘The Nervous Systems (Umbilical)’, 2023, (artwork render shown above) which employs an irrational – non-repeating – system. That’s because ‘the three arms are of different lengths, and all the gearing is aperiodic, so there’s no common denominator in the machine. If you try to follow one of the spools, it won’t go where you think it will … And so the machine will never come back to the initial conditions of the starting point.’ The rope will come down as a cone, and if you cut a cross-section, ‘it will be unique. It’s designed to have the string replaced each year, so it will run out after exactly twelve months, so there’s this moment when you replace the spools annually. In theory it can run 24/7 forever, but in 10, 20, 30 years you could extrapolate the exact moment that a cross-section represents – a bit like an ice core, it will be a unique moment in time.’ Meanwhile, ‘the rope will build up, accruing into a soft play area, almost, of organic fireproofed wool.’ To read their full conversation, please see the link in our bio 🔗 @conradshawcross @victoriamirogallery Words @paulcareykent 📸 ‘The Nervous System (Umbilical)’, 2023. The Library of Absence is a new conceptual book by @ConradShawcross made in collaboration with chess champion Vladimir Kramnik and Éditions Take 5 (@ctake5). The book opens into an ever-changing landscape of light patterns, a proliferation of possibilities. Also affectionately known as a suitcase of shadows or an umbrette, deriving from the Italian ‘shadow’, it is akin to a Dansette, the 1950s portable record player. Alongside the release of The Library of Absence, Shawcross and Kramnik will be in conversation this Thursday, 14 March at @maisonrousseaulitterature in Geneva. They will be joined by Bodmer Foundation director Jacques Berchtold and Celine Fribourg to discuss expansion, infinity, art, chess, and literature — book your place now via the link in bio. The Library of Absence ‘is an exploration of light and shadows, optics and perception,’ writes Shawcross. ‘I have created a light source that runs through perforated discs that rotate in reverse direction; their counter-rotating discs allow light to pass through their absences, creating an endless, immersive, and hypnotic effect. The 64 discs are perforated in different geometric patterns and through these I invite the viewer to experiment with almost unlimited projected configurations, an endless proliferation of possibilities.’ - Photos and videos by Richard Ivey #conradshawcross #vladimirkramnik #libraryofabsence #editionstake5 #vladimirkramnik

I will be showing ‘Patterns of Absence (MS20D17∆)’, 2023 at Tefaf Mastricht with Kent Antiques from Saturday 9th March-Thursday 14th March. My sculpture will appear in the show ‘Hidden Treasures: Geometry and Nature betweenPast and Present’ alongside a collection of Islamic antiques, all exploring geometric abstraction and the intricate patterns and motifs rooted in the rich traditions of Islamic culture-drawing heavily from nature and demonstrating a profound connection to the natural world. This new Patterns of Absence is composed of hundreds of thousands of absent triangles. The two perforated discs move in counter-rotation, activated by back light. The sculpture creates intricate patterns of light through the interface of holes, each disc is peppered with a myriad of complex perforations, producing an effect that triggers associations reminiscent of those experienced in nature. @kentantiques @tefaf #patternsofabsence #triangular #lightsculpture #conradshawcross #perforations #kineticsculpture

Returning to my Lightworks series, the Ada Project, 2014 was an ongoing series of musical commissions between myself and leading contemporary composers. Each piece of music was developed using a bespoke choreographic light robot developed by my team and I in my studio. Exposed to stories, philosophies and ideas surrounding the Victoria mathematician Ada Lovelace, from whom the project takes its name, each musician lived with us for around a week - responding directly to the movement, physicality, and tempo of a unique piece of choreography created on the robot. The series attempts to create a new form of musical commissioning, putting the musicians inside a unique set of creative constraints -conceptual, historical, visual and temporal. The release of the first four vinyl commissions coincided with a month long presentation of The Ada Salon at The Vinyl Space at The Brewer Street Park in Soho, London. Special thanks: The Royal Opera House, Palais de Tokyo, The Science Museum – London, Mark Wadhwa and MONA, PRS for Music Foundation, Richard Forbes-Hamilton, and the curator Ken Farmer with whom I originally conceived the project for Palais de Tokyo, Paris in 2013. @royaloperahouse @palaisdetokyo @sciencemuseum Thank you to the musicians involved, Beatrice Dillon, Rupert Clervaux, @holly_herndon, @thisismylo, Tamara Barnett Herrin, @miracalix_ . #theadaproject #adalovelcae #adaproject #lightworks #robot #roboticsculpture #lightsculpture #musicandart #palaisdetokyo #theroyaloperahouse #sciencemuseum #mona #conradshawcross

@ConradShawcross’s sculpture Slow Arc Inside a Cube XI is currently on view in Riyadh’s JAX District as part of the @NoorRiyadhFestival. ‘For this piece I was inspired by the groundbreaking work of the late British chemist, Dorothy Hodgkin, who described the process of modelling pig insulin as being “like trying to work out the structure of a tree by only seeing its shadow,”’ writes the artist. ‘Similarly, Slow Arc Inside a Cube XI invites us to see beyond the limits of human perception. The artwork’s cage casts out shadows in the form of mesmerising shapes, attempting to convey the expanse of space, depth of time and possible futures contained within our universe.’ On view until 2 March - Photos by @marilyn_clark via the artist #conradshawcross #noorriyadhrestival

This extraordinary building is The Francis Crick Institute, the biggest single biomedical laboratory in Europe. The research centre opened in Kings Cross in 2016 and it brings together Cancer Research UK, Imperial College London, King’s College London , the Medical Research Council, University College London and the Wellcome Trust in the fight to beat cancer and other killer diseases and conditions. In front if the building is ‘Paradigm’, a 14-metre high sculpture made of weathered steel and designed by the British artist Conrad Shawcross. It’s one of the largest public sculptures in London. If you have a spare minute in Kings Cross, pop out and have a look or you can visit from March when they reopen their public spaces
