In preparation for her talk, we asked her a few questions about her work, posting the rest of interview over the next couple of days. How did you begin to write poetry Katrina? I began to write poetry by accident. I'd always hated poetry at school, I found it elitist and dull. I began writing short stories, which were pretty rubbish. I went on a weekend course and we were asked to write something 'from the heart', the tutor said I'd written a poem. I said I couldn't have done, because I hated poetry but it was set out like a poem. She suggested I went to night school and to begin reading poetry, which I did. What poets have influenced your work? So many poets have influenced me and continue to do so. Probably the poet who has had the greatest influence is the US poet Sharon Olds. When I read her first collection, Satan Says, I knew I wanted to write poetry. I was lucky enough to go to the States and meet her some years ago. They always say don't meet your heroes. But Sharon Olds breaks that rule. She was amazing. Took me to the pictures after I'd interviewed her. We had a beer and chips together. #Marchmeetthemaker Day 2: Human Touch ✨My relationship with the digital world is ever changing, I try to harness its usefulness without it taking over my humanness. I used to have a real aversion to creating work digitally. At university, I was awful, I would avoid using photoshop and indesign ( mainly because I didn’t understand it ) I would go for the long way round doing things and wonder why I didn’t have such neat results as others, I’d often have mistakes on my work. I told myself, I was just a traditional artist who uses traditional techniques… paint, printmaking, I don’t need to be good at that stuff! Alas the world does not work this way anymore! As artists we need to have a knowledge of, and understanding of the digital aspect. I left university with my paintbrushes and roller in hand ready to take on the illustration world in Bristol, and quickly realised. Shit, I don’t know how to do those things i need to know. So I learnt! It was hard, but I cracked it and began to see how it could aid my work not hinder it. I still love working with slow traditional techniques, handpoke tattooing, printmaking. In these crafts you can see every mark made by a human hand, you can feel the humanness that goes into them. That’s what I love about them both. I now use technology to help with my designs, I love Procreate, like most tattooist this is my daily workspace, and although the design might be drawn up on an iPad and printed through a transfer printer, in the end, it will be imprinted on your skin dot by dot by my hand. Day 8 #stradaeasel Couldn’t get out to paint til this afternoon by which time cloud had settled over Feock. I plonked myself on a bench in a friend’s field and looked through the winter trees to glimpses of the Fal. This was an exercise in stoicism as the cloud refused to break and it got very cold. Just at the end there was a piercing chink of sun and I had to adopt the 2 hat mode in order to see! Tomorrow it will have to be really beautiful for me to venture out.
