History America's Greatest Hits November 3, 1975 Great music for a rainy Monday morning. I bought this on CD several years ago in the UK and wasn't looking for a vinyl copy, but sometimes these things just find us! I thought for sure this would sound like garbage since it's obviously a well loved copy, but surprisingly, it sounds great! It's funny how that works, sometimes I pull a record out that looks great and it sounds like a box of Rice Krispies! This copy caught my attention the other day because of what looks like an autograph on the back cover. I think it's just a former owner's artwork however. Upon further inspection, I noticed this copy is from the Philippines. The plant it was pressed in differs from what is listed in Discogs, but due to the sound quality, I have no reason to believe it's a counterfeit. The record label looks legit. The stamp on the back cover is slightly less convincing, especially since the cover still says Made In USA, but I know that was part of the generic album cover design template they likely received from the US. Either way, this is a fun addition to the collection. Having grown up in Hollywood, I dig the #crossroadsoftheworld on the back cover, a detail I had not previously noticed on my CD copy. Since I am living in California, I sort of miss the winters in New York City. It would be so much fun to join the other 900,000 New Yorkers who have run into Central Park to capture one inch of snow (after 700 days) on their smart phones. Way before smartphone photos and global warming was an alarm ; there was this storm. Like many in New York, a surprise on an early Sunday morning dumping a quick 10 inches on the city. There is something so romantic about a first snowfall, It turns us into children. This storm in 1996 had a few people venturing into Times Square to build Snowmen and cross country ski. This was when Kodak had a huge Jumbotron that ruled Times Square. The sign on this Tudor style building reads "Medical Building" in old English lettering. The back is marked "Hollywood." I have not been able to find out if it was in Hollywood, California, or perhaps in a different part of Los Angeles. The people who took the photo did visit Hollywood - in fact the number stamped on the back of this photo is the same as the one of the Hollywood Palladium photo I showed in an earlier post. Therefore the people who took the photo were at least using the same roll as the Palladium photo in the 1940s.
