Main stream Western therapy, the whole Western medical model for that matter, would have us believe that pain should be avoided at all costs. Don’t get me wrong, being in pain - physically or emotionally - is not fun and not something I would wish upon anyone. And I share this as someone who has struggled with chronic pain for almost fifteen years and has been dealing with Long Covid for two years - it’s no fun. Whether we are talking about physical pain, grief, depression, anxiety, whatever it might be - the conditioning from capitalism, patriarchy, and supremacy culture has us - rushing in to fix - urgently trying to change - forcing something shift - attempting to control that which is not wanted - reframing that which is deemed “negative” - shaming ourselves - denying our emotions - seeing ourselves as the problem None of this ever works in the long term. An embodied, trauma-informed, decolonial process of healing asks us to focus on relationship - both internally and externally. These are the things I know to be true about the healing process - both from my own healing journey and my work with others, - if we do not understand the underlying wound or emotional need - the “symptoms” will not have long lasting change, and/or the symptom will just morph into something new - our pain has something it wants to communicate to us - there is wisdom in pain, as hard as that can be to believe - trust. is. everything. if there is not trust with our body/pain/nervous system/the person we are working with, healing on a root level cannot happen. Without trust our bodies will continue to brace in a protective stance. - healing asks us to soften, to expand, to open - root level healing must include the body and the nervous system - every single one of us possesses an inherent capacity to heal, even when the journey doesn’t go as fast as we would like it to So wherever you are on your healing journey, I’m sending you ease, spaciousness and care. Can it please be beach time soon? There is no place where I feel at peace and get refreshed like the sand and the waves (and mini golf, donuts and rides too). Throughout the school year I am in a constant state of making and as much as I love it, come this time of year, I am wiped out. I get to a place where I feel like there isn’t much creativity left and I just want a break. However - it’s so often in these times of feeling like there is nothing left that God shows up and movement phrases come out of nowhere in my mind and I just keep going. We are singers, storytellers, and culture-makers.
We don’t know how to feel as a culture. Instead of being taught how to be present with our feelings and sensations, we are socialized to numb out, run from, bypass, or replace our feelings. We are conditioned to look away, to avoid, to stay stuck in our heads, to disconnect from our bodies, to focus on doing, achieving, producing. The message we receive is that we are not supposed to feel, and that feeling is some how weak and/or undesirable. When we are not taught practices for how to safely feel our feelings, be present to the sensations in our bodies, and ground ourselves, it is easy to become overwhelmed by them. In these moments of overwhelm, our nervous system can orient to feelings as a threat and move us into survival patterns of shutting down the feelings. So then both our conditioning and our biology keeps us from feeling. But the sacred truth is that there is so much wisdom in our feelings. When we find ways to BE WITH our feelings, opposed to BEING IN our feelings and overwhelmed by them, feelings can inform us, inspire action, connect us to one another, protect us, support us in embodying our values. If we cannot feel, if we cannot be in relationship with our inner landscape, we cannot heal. Healing both on the individual and collective level starts with knowing how to feel. Having a practice that grounds us *enough* so that we can feel our feelings and sensations is what allows us to step into our personal power and agency. If we are going to find a way to heal our trauma, as well as find a way to do our part in dismantling the systems of oppressi0n we are living in, we need to know how to feel. Curiosity can be a first step to reconnecting to this internal wisdom. You might start with some of the following inquiries. If it feels supportive, you might put one hand on your heart. On other option is to feel the connection your body has to the earth below. Then ask yourself, ✨What am I feeling? ✨What sensations do I notice in my body? ✨What does this feeling/sensation want to tell me or show me? ✨What does this part of me need to feel more safe, seen, understood? ✨How can I meet that need? #healing

We’re so quick to think something’s wrong with us when we don’t hit our goals. We don’t even think there might have been something wrong with the strategy rather than the execution. I can’t help but believe we’d all be better off if we started acknowledging that we are all different. We have different businesses, skills, anxieties, mental blocks, privileges, bank balances, commitments, priorities, goals, aptitudes etc., etc., etc. Rather than rush to tell our clients and customers what we think they should do based on our own experience alone, we should ask them questions and use their answers to find possible solutions that are informed by our experience certainly, but based on them and their business. The closing reception for Ghosts of Belltown last night was bittersweet; this is one of my favorite installations I’ve ever seen and it’s a huge privilege that it’s focused on the city I love and the community I’m so grateful to be a part of. Seeing this installation the first time, I was inspired and overwhelmed by everything there was to see—portraits, hidden views, trash given a second life to tell the story of this block—but on my second visit I started to really notice the poetry. Finding the hidden gems of prose dotting this installation felt like finding an antique map hidden in a hollow tree in an old growth forest. Each artist who contributed to this installation told its story from a different lens, and together, that story was powerful. The only consolation in knowing it’s ending is knowing some of what @base.camp.studios and @njferderer have in mind for the space next. You are beautiful becasuse you let yourself feel and that is a brave thing indeed." - Shinji Moon One of the gifts of taking on an apprenticeship with sorrow is that it cracks the tough shell of hyperindividualism so many of us have been conditioned to uphold. When our heart breaks open, we find our care spilling out in all kinds of unlikely places. We find good friends in trees and birds, stones and clouds. The moving water becomes a mentor for continual letting go and staying soft. We relax back into the truth of interbeing. I love my dear friend Francis's word "inter-vulnerability." Imagine we could cocreate a world where our vulnerabilities are welcomed as holy and beautiful by the world around us. Where we could quit trying so hard to perform perfection and act as if everything is grrreat even when it's not. I want to shift culture in that direction. Slowing down to the speed of life, becoming trustworthy caretakers of the tenderness in ourselves and each other. May it be so.
