How can you practice the art of healthy detachment in all of your relationships so that you can free yourself from the wounds of your past, coloring the lens through which you experience people today? Let’s start with marinating in the high of new love even before we meet someone new because we allow our fantasies to overwrite the reality of who they are when they show up. You’ll over romanticize things, write a script for how the relationship is is supposed to unfold. They don’t follow the script and since you don’t do improv, you lose interest 🤭🙃 Romanticizing new people creates expectations they'll play a role they didn’t sign up for. You become emotionally wedded to them being the version you’ve created in your mind so much so that you’ll internalize them not following the script. Detaching while dating is important you’re not internalizing their behaviors. It also lessens the whiplash of disappointment you experience because you think they’re going to be the one. Fall back. Sink back into your body and get out of your head. Know that what you want is valid, then embody and firmly on it. You're not "too much" for wanting to be treated with a basic level of decency and respect in your relationships. Detachment keeps you grounded and prevents you from lowering your standards when they don’t meet yours. It’s not a selfie……. I’m so excited just booked my first weekend away from the kids in about 15 yrs, a well overdue and much needed break. I can’t believe all the exciting plans I’ve got booked in for this year already and non of it would be possible without the amazing support I’ve had and got in my life right now which is helping to make all this possible and I am so incredibly grateful . Healing from complex trauma is ugly.  It is not all bubble baths, candles, yoga, hugging or even talking.  It is crying while sitting in the shower or in bed for hours and hours. Alone.  It is questioning yourself and life over and over again, trying to make sense of it all.  It is doubting and hurting yourself emotionally or physically, because there's just no other way to bear and express the pain.  It is feeling so desperate, that you think you can't keep on going any longer.  It is - in the end - facing the pain that broke you as a child and in the midst of the storm, not escaping it, but letting it be...letting it hurt you, feeling it...and then, learning to deal with it.  In the end, healing is about learning to carry yourself emotionally. It is saving your inner child, which had been left alone in the terrors of when it all happened for far too long.   I used to think that I'd go to therapy and my therapist would give me all the things I had been longing for for so long...love, care, safety....I used to think someone would come and make me feel whole again.  Now I realised, that that someone who saves me, has to be me.  In the process of healing, I am learning to carry myself with all my pain. I am learning to make myself feel loved, cared for and safe. I am learning to make myself feel whole again. And also accepting and caring for the parts that have been broken.  I am saving myself. Sometimes words are inadequate when it comes to putting a description to how we are feeling. In the words of Eugene Gendlin, before there are words, there is the wordless communication of the body. At times we get a sense that something isn’t right, or that we feel something brewing within us. In these instances, rather than using words, our body is asking us to attune to the sensations present as best we can. I liken such feelings as visitors. When we are able to acknowledge what is here, wanting to get our attention, we might like to greet and make its acquaintance gently, gradually, slowly. Understanding its preferences, the way we would when we get to know a friend. Does it prefer a direct gaze when you meet it, does it like to be greeted with self touch, is what is here asking for some space, would it like to be greeted through movement? It is in the process of becoming familiar with what is here that can allow the words and meaning to form, working at the level of the body, rather than trying to intellectualise something that we may find traumatic. Body scans can be a supportive tool at best, and re-traumatizing at worst. We might not have been taught to offer body scans in a trauma informed way, but it’s never too late to shift our practice. 🔒When we lead someone through a body scan, we could be forgetting that there are places in their body that might not feel accessible. ⛈️When we lead someone through a body scan without offering grounding resources, we are not offering support for potential activation. ⚔️When we lead someone through a body scan without using invitational language and adaptations, we are not honoring their autonomy or needs. If it is our practice to lead folks through body scans, let’s check in with our client around their comfortability with their body and accessing it via somatics and mindfulness. We might find that focusing on smaller areas better meets the needs of our client. We might find that our client prefers a different modality for checking in. Listen to your client. Consent is key. To hone your trauma informed approach for body scans and beyond, join the students in Foundations! I view religious trauma as a sort of cultural disorganized attachment. What I mean is that disorganized attachment happens when your greatest source of love and connection is also a source of fear and abuse. For example, in traditional attachment theory, a parent who is loving at times but is also abusive or distant will create an internalized double-bind for a child. In the same vein as spiritual abuse, the place or person you seek safety from is also the place causing the most pernicious harm. When I first started coming to terms with the spiritual abuse I experienced, it felt like nothing was secure. There is a reason for that. How do you unravel fear from safety when they came from the same source? This is why many people leave religious/spiritual organizations or groups. Unequivocal safety is no longer possible. Needy boy's gone weird. He feels the shifts in energy and mood as I hover over different states: *angry, *bereft, *crashed, *dejected, *eerie, *frightened, *grief, *horrified, *infuriated, *justified, *knowing, *lonely, *murky, *nightmares, *overwhelmed, *poorly, *quiet, *rejected, *sad, *trembling, *unloved, *vindicated, *worry, *xtra numb, *yearning, *zapped. We had more windows out of the concrete boot state. Long walk in the woods. Also.... 🎶We got flees, they're multiplying and I'm losing control🎵 - so I sprayed all the rugs and soft furnishings. We achieved more today than we have in weeks. Healthy tea last night and again tonight. The window of shoving stuff down our cake hole is appearing more frequently. Respect the ebb to boss the flow. It will change again. Appetite lost, poor sleep, too much sleep. If you have the luxury of time, you can just go with it. I didn't have that time until now. I was weighed down as my family dropped bombs on my progress. Adult, wise woman you doesn’t rely on anyone else in order to get by in the world - she is independent and resourceful so she can take risks and find support if and when she needs it. ⁠ ⁠ She doesn’t care what other people think of her or her actions. She is firmly grounded in her sense of self, believes in who she is and what she stands for, and therefore doesn’t need validation from others. ⁠ ⁠ This is NOT how little you feels. ⁠ ⁠ Because little you was never independent - she was always reliant on your primary caregivers for survival. ⁠ ⁠ Her parents’ emotional and physical welfare had a direct impact on her emotional and physical welfare, because they created the environment in which she grew up. ⁠ ⁠ She couldn’t feel calm, safe and protected if those around her didn’t feel calm and safe. So this part of you grew up looking for others to provide this FOR her (which now includes your colleagues, friends, partner and kids). ⁠ This all changes when you YOURSELF know how to give your inner child the love and validation that she has always been looking for from your parents. ⁠ ⁠ Because when she has what she needs, she no longer looks for it outside of herself - which is when you stop needing other people to be different or to act differently for you to feel ok. ⁠ ⁠ So if and when you find yourself wishing that someone would change in some way, ask yourself: ⁠ ⁠ ➡️which part of yourself desires this? ⁠ ➡️which of your inner child’s needs is she hoping would be met by this change? ⁠ ➡️how can you meet this need in yourself? ⁠ ⁠ When you can reparent your inner child, adult, wise woman you can step into the driving seat of your life. ⁠ ⁠ And you are finally free. ⁠ ⁠ (Learn which of your inner child’s needs you are not meeting, what your inner child missed out on and why and how to fill that gap through reparenting her, on Making Peace With Your Past - the signature, holistic healing programme that you do online, at your own pace, supported by two group coaching support calls per month with me. In early #cptsdrecovery, there is a lot of energy around calling out the hurt & harm other people have caused us. This truth needs to be shared in safe places with safe people who can hold space. Part of recovery is seeing your protective parts & energies that are running your show (Resist, Fight, Prove It, I’ll Show Them, Win, Expose) as protective. And, also, NOT the place to stay stuck. This is a training ground in restoring personal power. You have nothing to prove. Stay anchored in love. Turn your light on & shine it even brighter. Whatever “they” did or didn’t do – is on them. And it was their own protective parts & energies driven by fear & control or blocks to giving & receiving love. That is hurt & harm for everyone. I’m not saying you need to forgive. At first you need to feel all the feelings. But after transmuting your trauma, the energy will be restored to neutral. It was never about you; it was always about them playing the hand they were dealt. Shame is not needed.
