Dad 💛 Today it is 4 years since my lovely Dad was taken from us by Covid 💛. He was locked away in his care home where we were told he was safe. Like many others he was anything but ……. he was trapped and an untested patient came in from a hospital and 6 residents died 💛. The end was unthinkable and horrific with no intervention- his care workers only able to give the most basic of care and support. They were angels in disguise who put their own lives at risk every day, with no proper PPE for protection 💛 A young 19 year old lad sat with Dad and held his hand as he left this World - but it should have been us 💛 4 years on and so much has happened- my stepdaughter passed away 18 months later, I broke my neck in 22 and my husband died suddenly 8 months ago 💛. 💙 Sewing The Seeds Of Love 💙 I recently received a testimonial from a collector. She bought this piece over two years ago, and I was so incredibly touched to read her words: “I purchased two of Kim’s larger pieces, Sowing the Seeds of Love and We are Family. Originally I bought Sowing the Seeds of Love for my dad for Father’s Day a few years ago. The story Kim wrote along with the painting, immediately reminded me so much of my own relationship with my father. Half way through reading the story I was crying and I knew I had to have it! My dad would gather me and my sister and say, “we need to talk, just amongst us girls.” They were always important conversations. Looking back, he was indeed “sowing the seeds of love.” Since his passing a few months ago, I have the painting hanging in the foyer next to the front door. Every time I either walk out the door or walk down the stairs, I see the beautiful painting of the father bird and the baby bird. I smile at the image of ‘me and my father’ depicted in the painting and the love and memories in my heart replaces a bit of the grief and loss of missing him. I feel so grateful for Kim’s expression of her own love for her father. It allows me to feel deeply into my own story and the overwhelming love and gratitude I have for my dad and the seeds of love that continue to be revealed, even after his passing. Dad on duty so I could discuss Ofsted’s single word grades, offering my thoughts as a former teacher, and a mum of three today on @bbcradio4 and @bbc5live 📻. @parentkind’s research showed a need for reform. ‘As part of focus groups to gather in-depth reflections, parents expressed that they did not trust the Ofsted rating and inspection protocol, and many conducted their own visits to gauge the school climate before enrolling their child. They raised issues with the lack of consistency in inspections and out-of-date reports that did not reflect the current school environment’. As a teacher who has been ‘Ofstedded’ the stress on the school is immense and we all know of the tragedy of Headteacher Ruth Perry taking her own life after an Ofsted inspection. With an on-going teacher shortage crisis I first researched for @guardian on work experience during my Uni years, now is surely the time to offer a more fair and nuanced way to regulate and importantly help to improve schools which have collectively suffered under this government. My dad played a pivotal role in shaping me into who I am today. A hard working, loving, compassionate, empathetic, “don’t take no prisoners” type of woman who fights for a just & equitable society. He was a labor union activist, a trainer, a writer, a voracious reader, a leader and a man who cared deeply for the people who were often overlooked. So much of what our girls (and boys) are going through is just as confusing to them as it is to us... But underneath that confusing layer of eye-rolls, heavy sighs, stubbornness, and sassy remarks lies a girl who needs her mom and dad. She needs a heavy dose of patience and understanding. She needs you to look her in the eyes, tell her what she's feeling is normal and okay and part of growing up, and that you'll be right there with her the whole way. She needs you to take those tough days in stride knowing better days are on the horizon. She needs you to be strong and not take her behavior quite so personally because she really does love you... she's just going through a lot right now and she's focused on herself. She needs a little humor tossed in to keep life in perspective. She needs big hugs, cozy blankets, and her favorite meal because a little TLC goes a long way when you're a teenage girl who's questioning herself at every turn. She needs guidance (even when she's unaccepting) to help her find the path that's meant for her and keep her safe until she stumbles upon it. She needs you to be the calm in her chaos and the steady in her storm. She needs that reassuring look in your eye that says "Don't worry, babe... I promise, it'll be okay. She needs to know she's safe and secure in your arms, in your home, and in your heart. She needs to know your love is steadfast and that through it all, you're not going anywhere.
