Conquering my fears ⚡️✨ This one never got out of the drafts somehow 🥺🤷🏻♀️ back in January, I *enjoyed* Tower of Terror for the first time and also didn’t hold onto anything throughout the ride… this has been my biggest park fear and typically left me shaking for over an hour while I consoled myself with a Mickey pretzel… but I persevered and continued making myself face this fear! This is a new day, a new beginning💛✨💫 I haven’t wanted to talk about it because talking about made it real… but in September, my longterm relationship ended. Just writing this brings tears to my eyes, but it is real and if acknowledging it is what makes that set in then that’s what I’ll do. We had a beautiful 2 and a quarter years together and even though I’m hurting, I wouldn’t trade it for anything… I am grateful to have learned what love means and for all of the growth it gave us both until we grew apart. Those expectations may shape your reality when you come into the program… I’ve heard people talk only about every negative aspect of the program and those who pretend everything is perfect! 🤷🏻♀️ Personally, I have had days where I am over everything and do not want to work and am just burnt out but I have ALSO had days where I am so so happy to be making magic at the edge of the galaxy (the one that’s far, far away 😉)! I’ve had moments with kids that keep me smiling for hours, meet people who want to play in the world of Star Wars, and people who start off skeptical but have taken the challenge to jump in with me on my home planet! 🥺 Those moments make everything (even the hard days) worth it ❤️ This program (like any experience in life) is what you make of it. Let’s jump right in: 2️⃣ Use buzzwords and Disney language on your application when you list out past/current job responsibilities Using buzzwords like safety, customer service, guest and efficiency will help their system pick up on your application and you’ll move to the web-based interview faster As you can imagine, the DCP gets a LOT of applications and while every application will be looked at by a recruiter eventually, the ones rich in Disney keywords are the ones who “automatically” get a web-based interview For example, when I applied for my second program, I received an email to take my WBI about an hour later and other students who had applied before me were still waiting However, do NOT just throw words into the job responsibilities section for the sake of using buzzwords or Disney language Make sure the keywords you use are RELEVANT and MAKE SENSE under each job/experience Now you might be thinking, Kennedy just mentioned four important buzzwords but where can I find more?🤔 Great question! 🌐 Scroll through the job descriptions of your high interest roles (or all the roles!) on the DCP website and see what words they use and try to incorporate some of them into your responsibilities For example, as I’m writing this caption I’m looking through a bunch of different role descriptions and a lot of them say “working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.” Do you have any past experiences that involved working in a high volume or fast-paced environment? If so, add these buzzwords to your job responsibilities! If you have any questions about buzzwords, let me know! Time to make a DCP folder and SAVE all of these tips because I’m going to teach you how to get accepted with your first application! Have you heard the stories that sometimes it takes people two, three, four or MORE times to get accepted into the program? Well I’m here to teach you how to get it right the first time around so that you can start making magic sooner rather than later✨ Let’s jump in! 1️⃣ My first tip: Express interest in a lot of roles! The more roles you apply for, the better chance you have of getting into the program: ➡️ Applying for lots of roles vs only a limited few gives the recruiters the opportunity to consider you for multiple positions = better chance of getting in ➡️ Later in the application season, roles can start filling up too so if the 3 roles you applied for are filled up, then you’re automatically NLIC (no longer in consideration) ➡️ But if you applied for 15 roles, they can find you a spot somewhere else ➡️ Don’t limit your chances of getting accepted by only applying to a few roles! However, you do have to remember you’re working a full-time job so only apply for roles you’d be happy doing for 4-7 months. You won’t have fun if you’re miserable at your job My first program, I applied for 19 roles and my second program I applied for 9 roles. I was pickier the second time around because I had already done a program and I felt confident that I would get accepted again (I would have never admitted this while applying/interviewing out of fear of jinxing it😂) But the first time I applied, I just wanted to do the program so bad I was willing to do most of the jobs and knew that no matter what role I got, I would have fun living at Disney and boy, did I have fun!👏🏼 Good luck future programmers!✨ 🏰 Who’s excited for this new series?! Did you know that every single Disney cast member has the same job?🤯 No matter what your role is, no matter your location, every cast member has the same job: to create happiness✨ This is one of the first things they teach you in Traditions (your first official training day) and one of the reasons why working at the parks and resorts is so magical! Of course guests love the attractions, food, merch, castle, etc. but the true magic of Disney comes from the interaction with cast members. Many families will only take one big Disney trip in their lifetime. How can you make it magical? How can you make it memorable? Having this mindset every day makes for such a positive work environment and program experience. It helps you to look at the bigger picture of your job versus focusing on your every day role that you may not enjoy all the time. During your initial application you send off to the Disney recruiters, you will rank every single role that’s offered for the locations you expressed interest in (Disney World and/or Disneyland) ➡️ Example: If you chose WDW as your first program choice and DL as your second choice, you will rank roles for both programs. If you rank WDW as first choice and say no interest to the DL program, you will only rank WDW program roles. (If you’re curious to know which locations offer which roles, check out my blog linked in bio!) Things to remember: 🏰 You will rank every role no, low, moderate or high interest 🌳 You can be placed in ANY role you rank low, moderate or high interest 🌐 The only roles you will NOT be placed in are the roles you rank NO interest 🎬 This is why it’s SUPER important to do your research on each role because you could potentially be placed in a role you ranked as low so you have to make sure you’re comfortable performing that role for 4-8 months 👻 You could potentially be put in a low/moderate/high role you NEVER talked about in your phone interview (happened to me both times) 🥨 First Program: Talked a LOT about lifeguard and I was placed in quick-service food and beverage which was never brought up during our phone interview (but I DID rank it and therefore, had the possibility of being placed in that role) 🛍 Second Program: Mainly talked about PhotoPass but was placed in merchandise = valid because I ranked merch high interest ➖My biggest tip for you: If this program is your DREAM, I would rank as many roles as possible. Please do not limit yourself by only ranking 3 roles and everything else in no interest. You’re actually hurting your chances of getting accepted by ranking a few roles (more about this on my story). But also keep in mind this is a full-time job so only express interest in roles you could truly see yourself doing and enjoying for 4-8 months . 💜MORE info on my story + question box if you have questions! 𝒩𝑜𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝒾𝓈 𝓂𝑜𝓇𝑒 𝓌𝑜𝓃𝒹𝑒𝓇𝒻𝓊𝓁 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓃 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒾𝓂𝒶𝑔𝒾𝓃𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃✨ . If you’re thinking, “Kennedy that’s not your regular costume?!” then you’d be right! I decided to randomly pick up a Fantasmic shift on Halloween! Earlier this week on my stories I talked a bit about requesting a work location during your DCP phone interview (if you missed it, I added it to my “DCP Tips” highlight!). If you don’t end up getting your dream location or park, you can always pick up a shift somewhere else, depending on your role. For example: Working in quick-service, I was able to pick up at any QS location but I would probably be bussing or just filling trays there because I don’t know how to make any of the food or know how everything is set up on their registers (def could’ve figured this last one out tho haha) so for me personally, it wouldn’t have been super fun picking up a shift and having to bus all day. So on a day off, I turned to Fantasmic! It was right next to my location, a lot of my coworkers picked up shifts there, it was a shorter shift, I knew I would get a good position & I wanted to listen to the show! It was the perfect place for me to pick up a shift. . If you can, I highly recommend picking up somewhere else at least once. Taking a shift at a different location is a great way to work at every park (I know that’s on some people’s bucket lists!), wear different costumes which can be fun, meet new people or just change up your regular schedule! Again, not every role is able to pick up at other locations or if you do, you may be limited on the positions you can perform but that’s okay! If you’re in a role where you can’t pick up elsewhere and desperately want to, holiday party treat shifts are up for grabs!🎃👻🎄🎅🏼 . 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗜’𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿!🥵 . Let’s talk about my fav topic: WEATHER ACCLIMATION!🤪 I’ve lived in Wisconsin my entire life, we get hot summers and very cold winters and everything in between! I knew moving to Florida during the summer would be intense but I’ll be honest- it wasn’t TOO bad! Disney informed us it would take about two weeks for us to acclimate to the weather and my body definitely did! Being outside in the heat at work got easier and easier and by the time November rolled around, I was shivering in 60 degree weather (shorts weather in Wisconsin lol). But even though your body acclimates, it’s not completely “immune” to the heat. Exhibit A: this pic from one month into my program, sweating SO BAD at MK!😂 Here are my tips on combating the Florida heat: ☀️ Get a portable fan! I got a pink one from Amazon for under $20, such a lifesaver! ☀️ Drink LOTS of water!💦 ☀️ Keep your hair up & off your neck ☀️ If you’re at the parks, take breaks in the AC! Fav break spots that also happen to be attractions😉: Carousel of Progress, Mickey’s Philharmagic, Frozen Singalong & Festival of the Lion King ☀️ Wear light, breezy clothes! I recently picked up a dress from @onceupona_thread to keep me cool at the parks ☀️ Bring multiple masks with you to the parks because you’ll probably get sweaty and it’ll be nice to change into a clean, dry mask —> How do you combat the heat at Disney? 𝑳𝑶𝑵𝑮 𝑳𝑰𝑽𝑬 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑨𝑫𝑽𝑬𝑵𝑻𝑼𝑹𝑬!🎉 . One of my favorite stories to tell people about my Disney College Program is that there were only TWO days during my entire program that I wasn’t off on an adventure. One day I was really sick and had to stay home and the other day I had loads of laundry to do that just couldn’t wait! All the other days, I was at the parks, working at Hollywood Studios, going to the parks/Disney Springs before or after work or at Universal Studios nearby! Not a day went by (except those 2😂) that I wasn’t off on an adventure and that’s one of my biggest DCP tips! Live your program to the FULLEST! Even if you’re tired, try to do something every single day! Get up and go to the parks before work, grab a bunch of friends and go to the water parks on your day off, catch a movie at Disney Springs after work or go to Halloween Horror Nights until 2am. You’re not going to remember the days when you stayed home to watch Netflix or nap although sometimes we do need that too. Try your hardest to fully immerse yourself in this program, it’s a dream come true that doesn’t last long enough so make the most of your time there✨💜 .
