Ancient Lakebeds Uncovered Nikon z9, 24mm, 1/160, f/11, ISO 100 • The US Southwest is a geologist’s playground! There is so much to discover and explore in these ancient lakebeds that are exposed by millions of years of erosion. Colours in the Painted Desert are in the Chinle Formation and represent different soil horizons. Colours result from different minerals present in soils with variance due to time these soils were underwater. Blue and green hues are noticed in areas that were underwater longer with lack of oxygen while reddish colours are where water table fluctuations took place and iron minerals oxidizes (rusted). Arches in Stone Nikon z9, 70mm, 1/50, f/11, ISO 100 • We walked closer to the La Ventana Arch and were engulfed with the immensity of this natural structure. There is a path that leads right into the arch, but we were on a time schedule, so didn’t walk all the way in, but definitely will next time. La Ventana Natural Arch Nikon z9, 70mm, 1/2500, f/2.8, ISO 100 • When you take roads less travelled you find hidden treasures along the way. The La Ventana Natural Arch in New Mexico is one of those gems. This arch formed over time from freeze/thaw and erosion cut out of Jurassic Zuni Sandstone formed 160 million years ago. The area is now protected and stunning to see up close. This arch - meaning “window” in Spanish is the second largest natural stone arch in New Mexico. Original Bridge Nikon z9, 34mm, 1/80, f/11, ISO 100 • In 1930, Arizona highways looked for a viable place for all weather traffic to cross the Salt River. This section of highway 60 North of Globe was the best spot, so work began on a unique bridge for the time that was not only functional, quick to construct, but also piece of art. This was the bridge we crossed over every time we traveled across the canyon from the time I was a kid well into my 30s. From what we could tell, you can no longer take these steps down to the river. I was happy to see this new visitor centre detailing the richness and history of this stunning canyon. Switchbacks of Time Nikon z9, 54mm, 1/125, f/11, ISO 100 • I remember as a little girl out riding in the hills of the Southwest with my dad when we would go up and down crazy switchbacks. They used to scare and thrill me all at the same time. The first (and every time) we would travel through Salt River Canyon, these better engineered yet steep roads in switch backs made me dizzy and amazed at the ingenuity of road building. Florence Coke Ovens Nikon z9, 560mm, 1/80, f/11, ISO 100 • I’ve heard about the Florence Coke Ovens and was so excited Tony knew how to find them. As they are on private land, we could only see them from a high point above. “The ovens were used to reduce mesquite wood to coke, a hotter burning fuel, for use in smelting gold and silver taken from surrounding mines. The beehive-shaped stone coke ovens are each about 25 feet in diameter and 30 feet in height. Each has a ground level entry and a few upper level vents. The mesquite wood, burned slowly in the ovens for days, yielded the coke. Desert Beauty ★彡𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒍 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔彡★ 📍Landscapes and scenes of Namibia Ever had an unwanted and negative travel experience that turned into a positive one? ******************* On our way to Namibia, we were supposed to have brief layover in Munich, but one that would not be long enough to leave the airport and explore the city. Well, life had other plans. Technical issues with the plane caused a delay, which became a longer delay, and a longer delay, until we finally we were able to take off a full 24 hours after the original intended departure time. The technical issues were so serious that the airline had to fly in a second plane from Seattle so that they could get us to Namibia the next day. Needless, to say, it was a frustrating experience. At least at first it was. Well, as luck would have it, that extra day in Munich just so happened to coincide with the first day of Oktoberfest (hence the last few picks of the carousel). I couldn’t think of a better way to “forget” those unexpected transit issues. The Old Cowboy Nikon z9, 200mm, 1/2500, f/2.8, ISO 100 • From the first shot I took of the stallion in the trees to this last shot of the Old Lieutenant (I’m assuming) was only 35 minutes. The light was already fading off the water leaving shadows deep and colours muted. This last scarred horse reminded me of an old watchful cowboy. The Stallion Nikon z9, 200mm, 1/2500, f/2.8, ISO 100 • While we watched the herd I spoke with another photographer who was from Montana. She came every year to photograph the wild horses. She told us that in the herd there was the matriarch mare that led the herd when they travelled and the Stallion that watched over the herd and went at the end. The Stallion had a lieutenant who was always with him watching as well. This stallion was the one who had his eye on me in the trees and watched the entire herd cross (except for the one couple that was separated from the herd). Hidden Nikon z9, 200mm, 1/500, f/2.8, ISO 100 • Holli and I headed down the river searching for the horses. We agreed to go half an hour and then turn around. After about 15 minutes I had a feeling to stop and listen. Sure enough a quiet neigh came right below where we walked. There hidden among the branches of the river stood the Wild Horse Band. The fact that in this photo the horse is slightly blurred as the camera focus was on the trees in front shows just how well they hide. This large stallion stood and watched me as I watched him. The Veil Nebula Complex *(NGC 6960, NGC 6992, NGC 6974) nebula lies about 1,500 light-years away, and is a supernova remnant, left over from a massive stellar explosion that occurred between 5,000 to 8,000 years ago. So at the end of last year, I captured an image of the Veil Nebula Complex. It marked the first attempt at employing the mosaic method use the ZWO AISAIR. Despite 8 nights of imaging, I was only able to use 4 nights of data. This was due to 3 sessions with unintentional variations in gain, and then another night, I left the bahtinov mask on all night lol. A good reminder that astrophotography is a game of patience and imperfection. I plan to layer more onto this image, exploring further possibilities in post-processing down the line. 📍 Somewhere in Saudi Arabia After arriving into Bahrain by plane, we took the King Fahd causeway to enter the Kingdom and stayed in the city of Al Khobar. From here we drove to Riyadh which took about 3-4 hours. The road to get here was well…a bit boring but pretty cool in a way. The sand dunes and the hazy sun provided a really neat, Mars-like, Bladerunner 2049 feel to it. If you have never been in a desert, you may realize just how cool of a landscape it is.
