Take a gander at this beauty. 😍 The minute I saw @gandara_minerals post this petrified wood, I knew it belonged in my collection. Nathan does incredible work and the colors on this end-polished piece really pop, while all other sides retain their natural texture. Plus, the locality is really awesome, with Petrified Forest National Park not far from Holbrook. (Also a little reminder to anyone out there: I take photo commissions for any special pieces in your own collection that you want photographed— everything from fossils to rocks to arrowheads to fluorescents and more. Just sayin’.) • Araucaria arizonicum • Holbrook, Arizona • Chinle Formation (Triassic) #petrifiedwood #petwood #chinleformation #triassic #plantfossil #colorfultree #araucariafossil #fossilizedwood #petrifiedwoodcollector

The 135-mile Rio Chama of #northernNewMexico is a major #tributary of the Rio Grande. From its alpine headwaters at the Continental Divide of the glaciated San Juan Mountains in southern Colorado, the river flows across the Colorado Plateau in a spectacular canyon cut into Mesozoic #sedimentaryrock. The #RioChama has been carving a 900-foot-deep canyon of colorful #siltstone, #gypsum, and sandstone sedimentary layers dating back millions of years. There are even the imprints of dinosaur tracks preserved in one side canyon. Sagebrush, #chollacactus and #piñon woodlands cover the hills, and forests of #ponderosapine and #Douglasfir cover the north-facing slopes, stretching up the #canyon walls appearing as ivy from a distance. #Alcoves form like the one seen here at the contact with the #EntradaSandstone and the shale within the #ChinleFormation. They are common where #aquifer rocks sit on top of an aquitard, a #geological formation of a rather semipervious nature that transmits water at slower rates than an aquifer. The groundwater (before any canyon cutting) is “ponded” on top of the #shale, thus weakening the cement in the overlying sandstone, such that when it is finally exposed, it weathers faster 🏜️🏞️ #pano #panorama #panoramicphotography #sigma60600mmsports #sonya7riii #sonyalpha #sigmaphoto

Ancient Lakebeds Uncovered Nikon z9, 24mm, 1/160, f/11, ISO 100 • The US Southwest is a geologist’s playground! There is so much to discover and explore in these ancient lakebeds that are exposed by millions of years of erosion. Colours in the Painted Desert are in the Chinle Formation and represent different soil horizons. Colours result from different minerals present in soils with variance due to time these soils were underwater. Blue and green hues are noticed in areas that were underwater longer with lack of oxygen while reddish colours are where water table fluctuations took place and iron minerals oxidizes (rusted). For more on the geology of this area check out NPS.gov and search for Petrified Forest National Park. • #nikonphotographer #photographerlife #capturingtheshot #livingphotography #photography #Verotography#newmexico #petrifiedforest #painteddesert #historicroute66 #desertshots #desertcolours #desert #arizonalandscapes #chinleformation #ancientlakebeds

Poposaurus is an extinct genus of pseudosuchian archosaur from the Late Triassic of the southwestern United States. It belongs to the clade Poposauroidea, an unusual group of Triassic pseudosuchians that includes sail-backed, beaked, and aquatic forms. Fossils have been found in Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Texas. Except for the skull, most parts of the skeleton are known. The type species, P. gracilis, was described and named by Maurice Goldsmith Mehl in 1915. Like theropod dinosaurs, Poposaurus was an obligate biped, meaning that it walked on two legs rather than four. However, as a pseudosuchian, it is more closely related to living crocodilians than to dinosaurs. Poposaurus is thought to have evolved this form of locomotion independently, possibly from early archosaurs’ ability to high walk. With the tail comprising about half the body length, Poposaurus was about 4–5 metres (13–16 ft) long and weighed 90 to 100 kilograms (200 to 220 lb) as an adult. The paleoart piece on the second panel was created by me and is titled “The thrill of the hunt”. It depicts a Poposaurus hunting down a pair of Shuvosaurids near a calm river. The drawing takes place in the Chinle formation (216 mya) during the late Triassic. #fossilrecord #fossils #paleontology #paleontologist #paleoart #paleoartist #peabodymuseum #yalepeabodymuesuem #yaleuniversity #naturalist #yourshotphotographer #triassic #pangea #notadinosaur #pseudosuchia #poposaurus #archosaur #pterosaur #phytosaur #shuvosauridae #shuvosaurid #chinleformation

📍 @petrifiedforestnps, AZ 📸 🔹 #bluemesa This. Member. Is OLDDDD! It’s insane to think about a time so intangibly far in the past, a river pushing and pulsing layers of deep sea sediment and sand to create the #chinleformation, over 200 MILLION YEARS AGO. makes you feel reallllllll small doesn’t it? The blue mesa trail shows the Blue Mesa Member, which gets its bluish/purple banding from bentonite clay in the mud rock and from possible high water tables millions of years ago, creating an oxygen deprived environment, giving the iron in the sand a bluish tone. This area tends to flood and due to how soft it is, slowly washes away revealing new petrified wood pieces of fossils search time the purple sludge is swept away. Their rusty color is such a delicious contrast to the blue and purple bands. It was very fun to find little monoliths, standing alone and squeezed between. Reminded me of the rock sequence in everything everyone all at once. They seemed to be alive. 10/10 good time #nationalpark #petrifiedforest #naturephotography #postcards #desert #landscapephotography

Along with the awesome fossil trees at Petrified Forest National Park, the landscape itself is stunning where badlands outcrop. These layers of ancient sedimentary deposits are part of the Chinle Formation, and like many other badlands habitats, they weather to form a shrink-swell clay soil which is very difficult for most plants to survive in. There is however a whole host of plants that have evolved to specialize in this type of habitat. Members of the genera Atriplex, Eriogonum, Phacelia, and Vesper are all common denizens of badlands across western North America. I hope to spend more time in this habitat this summer! #petrifiedforestnationalpark #petrifiedwood #petrifiedforest #badlands #sedimentary #clay #shrinkswellclay #landscape #landscapes #arizona #chinleformation #chinle #botany

Under the canopy of huge #triassic Araucarioxylon conifers of the upper Chinle formation, a small pseudosuchian #hesperosuchus investigates a recent tree fall. He searches through beetle bores in the enormous trunk that may still hold larva, however his quarry is apparently already out of reach. This painting was inspired by a paper recommended to me by my friend Paul Byrne looking at Holometabolan insect pupation in conifer wood fossils from the #chinle formation. We both came to the conclusion that depicting that kind of insect behavior preserved in the fossil record with a hungry Hesperosuchus was a great idea. Paul studies pseudosuchians and also helped with anatomical advice/ the depiction of the little land croc. #paleoart #paleoartist #pseudosuchian #chinleformation #naturalhistoryillustration #sciart #scientificart #dinosaurs #dinosaurart #scicomm #art #artistsoninstagram #digitalart #digitalpainting

The Battleship is the prominent butte across the main Petrified Forest National Park road from Crystal Forest, first showing on a map from 1912 as Battleship Rock. The petrified logs—a few are left—sticking out from the hillside were supposed to resemble cannons on a ship. The bluish-gray layer of The Battleship is part of the Jasper Forest Beds of the Chinle Formation. There are many pieces of petrified wood, both large and small, that have eroded from this formation, spreading out like a skirt from the base.

Petrified Forest National Park is a national park in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park covers about 346 square miles, encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands. The Petrified Forest is known for its fossils, especially fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic Epoch, about 225 million years ago. The sediments containing the fossil logs are part of the widespread and colorful Chinle Formation, from which the Painted Desert gets its name. In addition to petrified logs, fossils found in the park have included Late Triassic ferns, cycads, ginkgoes, and many other plants as well as fauna including giant reptiles called phytosaurs, large amphibians, and early dinosaurs. This postcard shows the Agate Bridge, a partially exposed petrified log spanning a gully at Agate Mesa. In the early history of the park, many visitors had their picture taken while standing on the log. Fear of the collapse of this landmark by the railroad—it was a major attraction—led to masonry pillars being constructed underneath in April 1903, later followed by concrete in 1911. These were replaced by concrete beams in 1917, paid for by the government and installed by the railroad. The log is about 100 feet in length and 4 feet in diameter at its base. It spans 40 feet across the chasm and is 16 feet above the canyon floor. In the late 1800s the paleobotanist Lester Frank Ward (1841–1913) proclaimed Agate Bridge to be the “most noted single petrified log in the world.”

The Painted Desert is a series of badlands in the Four Corners area, running from near the east end of Grand Canyon National Park and southeast into Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. It is most easily accessed from the north portion of Petrified Forest National Park. The Painted Desert was named by a Spanish expedition under Francisco Vázquez de Coronado during his 1540 quest to find the Seven Cities of Cibola. Passing through the wonderland of colors, they named the area El Desierto Pintado. The desert is composed of stratified layers of siltstone, mudstone, and shale of the Triassic Chinle Formation, which erode easily. These fine-grained rock layers contain abundant iron and manganese compounds, which oxidize into reddish colors. However, when the water table is high, there is less oxygen in the ground, and that can turn those deposits blue or green. Higher amounts of manganese can even produce a lavender color.

Petrified Forest National Park 🖤 It is an American national park in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park covers about 346 square miles (900 square kilometers), encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands. The park's headquarters is about 26 miles (42 km) east of Holbrook along Interstate 40 (I-40), which parallels the BNSF Railway's Southern Transcon, the Puerco River, and historic U.S. Route 66, all crossing the park roughly east–west. The site, the northern part of which extends into the Painted Desert, was declared a national monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962. #nationalpark #nationalparkservice #petrifiedforest #painteddesert #arizona #nationalparkphotographer #bnw_nationalparks #bnw_planet #yourshotphotographer #natgeoyourshot #nationalparkgeek #petrifiedforestnationalpark #petrifiedforestnp #bnwframing #bnwart #visitarizona #travelphotography #pueblo #saveourparks #chinleformation #chinle #coloradoplateau #fossils #fossil @petrifiedforestnps

Day 78. Sample number 0040 is a purple-gray sediment from Washington County, Utah. After checking the coordinates, I am pretty sure this is derived from the Petrified Forest member of the Chinle Formation (late Triassic). The Petrified Forest member consists of a variety of sedimentary deposits, including mudstones, siltstones, sandstones, and conglomerates. It is named after its exceptional preservation of petrified wood and is a prominent feature of Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona. The colorful and diverse sediments found in the Petrified Forest member are a result of ancient river systems, floodplain environments, and occasional volcanic activity. The sediments contain evidence of ancient forests, rivers, lakes, and the surrounding terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Late Triassic period. #chinleformation #mudstone

But I DID get pictures of the chinle formation that look like a landscape from the moon or some far off planet from the 1950’s version of space. Haha The chinle formation is also found in Zion. It’s part of the Colorado Plateau and is made up of siltstones, mudstones and sandstone and volcanic ash! The ash is what gives the elephant texture weathering. There are also many fossils embedded within these sediments. #meteorcrater #roadtrip #petrifiedforest #petrifiedforestnationalpark #painteddesert #chinleformation #geology #rocks

Off to explore Petrified Forest National Park! The petrified logs found here were deposited within an ancient river system, along with plenty of sand and layers of volcanic ash. Those materials are part of what we now know as the Triassic Chinle Formation. Once buried, the logs’ organic materials were replaced over time by minerals such as silica. One of the oldest dinosaur teeth in the collection, if not the oldest one. After reading and study a lot about this, I'm quite sure (but not 100%) on this guy. Here's a 𝑪𝒐𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒊 tooth, from the Petrified Forest (Chinle Formation, New Mexico), found close to the famous Ghost Ranch! Although this first dinosaur may be found in other Late Triassic outcrops. Lot of diagnostic features lead me to think of the id of this tooth such as: ✅ Serration density: 40 to 45 /5mm dentary and 35 to 50 /5mm maxillary (from Hendrickx 2019) ✅ Fluted ridges are observed only in juveniles ✅ Lacking of marginal and transverse ondulations on most crowns ✅ Laterally compressed BUT, in the other hand, there's few things that don't match, such as the lower degree of curvature of the tooth (despite not all the teeth are recurved at all)... Nevertheless, I would assume this tooth to be dinosaurian. Triassic dinosaurs are truly fascinating also and especially for their halo of mystery. . . . . . . . #huatlocollection #collection #dinosaur #tooth #dinosaurtooth #Triassic #Jurassic #coelophysis #fossil #fossils #Fossilfriday #mesozoic #chinleformation #chinle #usa #newmexico #paleo #paleontology #biology #geology #geologyrocks #museum

The mouth of Red’s Canyon out in the remote “Hondu Country” of the San Rafael Swell. This view shows a good portion of the Triassic and some of the Jurassic rocks of this part of Utah. . The lowest, deep reddish-brown strata in the photo are part of the Triassic Moenkopi Formation. The Moenkopi was deposited as a shoreline system which include tidal flats, deltaic, and interdeltaic systems. Above it lies the variegated fluvial, lacustrine, and floodplain deposits of the Triassic Chinle Formation. It contains evidence of both braided and meandering stream systems, mudflats, swamps, and lakes. The lower line of cliffs are the Wingate Sandstone. Above that are sandy slopes of the Kayenta Formation and the top cliff line, visible at the center of the panorama, with rounded, dome-like tops is the Navajo Sandstone. Together, these constitute the Glen Canyon Group. Both the Navajo and the Wingate Sandstones are the lithified remains of massive sand seas known as “ergs”. Imagine a dune field which covers most of the western portion of the continent. The Kayenta Formation, between them, is probably of Jurassic age and seems to represent a period where a system of rivers and their floodplains were active here. The age of the Navajo is debated but it may be the case that in some places it’s Jurassic and in others, the Triassic-Jurassic transition lies somewhere within those sands. Aeolian sandstones are notoriously difficult to date. . I think that parts of Utah would make an excellent vacation destination through much of the Mesozoic. The only trick would be not getting eaten or stepped on by a dinosaur.

The fossilized remains of Funcusvermis gilmorei were found in the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation in Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona. Living amphibians (Lissamphibia) include frogs and salamanders (Batrachia) and the limbless worm-like caecilians (Gymnophiona). Now exclusively home to South and Central America, Africa, and southern Asia, caecilians spend their lives burrowing in leaf-litter or soil searching for prey such as worms and insects. Prior to the discovery of Funcusvermis gilmorei, only 10 fossil caecilian occurrences were known, dating back to the Early Jurassic epoch, about 183 million years ago. However, previous DNA studies estimated evolutionary origins of caecilians back to the Carboniferous or Permian periods, some 370 million to 270 million years ago, marking that 87-million-year gap. However, no such fossils had been found. Funcusvermis gilmorei shares skeletal features related more with early frog and salamander fossils, strengthening evidence for a shared origin and close evolutionary relationship between caecilians and these two groups. This is a pair of bookends made from richly colored, 225 million year old petrified wood (Araucaria?) which was collected from the Chinle Formation of Arizona. The polishing has been done locally by an expert polisher giving them a much better shine with no dull spots. The sides have been felt lined. Each bookend slightly varies in size, with one measuring 6.05" tall, 5.8" wide and 1.65" thick, while the other is 6" tall, 5.95" wide and 1.7" thick. The Chinle Formation was deposited over 200 million years ago during the Late Triassic Period. The colorful badland hills, flat-topped mesas, and sculptured buttes of the Painted Desert are primarily made up of the Chinle Formation, mainly fluvial (river related) deposits. Within Petrified Forest National Park, the Chinle Formation is further divided to include the Blue Mesa Member, the Sonsela Member, the Petrified Forest Member, and the Owl Rock Member. The Blue Mesa Member consists of thick deposits of grey, blue, purple, and green mudstones and minor sandstone beds, the most prominent of which is the Newspaper Rock Sandstone. This unit is best exposed in the Tepees area of the park. The Blue Mesa Member is approximately 220-225 million years old. #PetrifiedForestNationalPark @petrifiedforestnps @nationalparkservice #ChinleFormation #BlueMesaTrail #hiking #geology #science #EducationalExcursions #Arizona #OnlyinArizona @only_in_arizona

We had a wonderful sunny day of pigment hunting on Friday after an evening of snow fall Thursday night! Luckily it didn't snow too much in the area where we were hiking so it wasn't to muddy out. Of course the power of the sun makes quick work in melting the snow! We explored a colorful arroyo along a fault line between the Chinle and Morrison Formation ranging from 150 to 250 million year old mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone deposited in an ancient floodplain and fluvial environments when the inland seas existed in much of what is now New Mexico. Sigyn is the queen of bone collectors and magically covers the terrain in search of other four legged beings such as Jack rabbits and Coyotes.. #pigmenthunter #pigmenthunting #earthpigmentworkshop #naturalpaints #colorsoftheearth #geologicallandscapes #ancientseas #chinleformation #morrisonformation

WALKING WITH DINOSAURS EPISODE ONE (“NEW BLOOD”) REVIEW: One aspect of this episode that’s really effective is the sense of competition. It has an “out of the world, in with the new” sort of vibe to it. Throughout the episode, we gradually see how the more ancient reptiles are outcompeted by the more successful newer breed of reptiles… the dinosaurs! Our main lead is female Coelophysis and we get to experience how her species is slowly taking over the planet with the anticipation of things to come. Kenneth Branagh is the perfect choice to narrate this series as he’s not over the top or theatrical with the way he tells the story. The soundtrack in this episode is also fantastic, the highlight which was the ending score for the demise of the female Postosuchus. I also really like the dry and arid setting as it gives you a sense that the Triassic period is a harsh and foreboding world. The biggest problem with the episode is that the overall storyline is rather lacking and it’s really just a set up for the other episodes. Overall though, New Blood is a decent start to an amazing series! #WalkingWithDinosaurs #DinosaurDocumentary #Palaeontology #TriassicPeriod #TriassicDinosaurs #ChinleFormation #NorthAmericanDinosaurs #Coelophysis #Placerias #Thrinaxodon #Postosuchus #Peteinosaurus #Plateosaurus
