Navigating Buffets with Food Allergies at Walt Disney World is a real TREAT! ✨ If you’re like me and CRINGE at the thought of buffets due to food allergies, because it is truly a cross contamination nightmare, you are NOT ALONE! I used to SKIP going to some of my favorite Disney character dining locations due to the buffet, before I learned these tips from over the years to help ease my worry with food allergies and enjoy a delicious, stress free dining experience! Now it’s my gift to be able to pass on these tips to fellow food allergy foodies like myself! ✨ For buffets you’ll be offered an allergen guide to use at the buffet - if you DO feel comfortable using it! ✨ If you’re like me and DON’T feel comfortable eating off of the buffet, I simple ask my waiter to speak to the allergy chef. In the meantime, I go through the guide and actually circle with a pen items I’d like from the kitchen. When the chef arrives, I go over allergies, and I actually hand them the allergy guide that I’ve noted my allergies, and preferences for my meal. Over the years I’ve had Disney chefs remember me from doing this, because it was easier for them too! ✨Once your food comes out- you simply enjoy! Navigating Food Allergies & Dietary Restrictions at Walt Disney World is truly MAGICAL ✨ I remember my first trip after being diagnosed with Celiac Disease & multiple food allergies I was TERRIFIED, I read several blogs @glutenfreedairyfreedisney was basically my lifeline as they had the menus listed online, and that was ESSENTIAL to help ease anxiety and know all would be okay! My top tips for dining safely with food allergies & restrictions would be… ✨ Notify the restaurant of your food allergies, by adding them to your Advance Dining Reservations (it’s super easy to do, and something your travel agent can take care of to help ease your worries!) ✨ When arriving to your reservation, notify them of your allergy- The more the merrier in telling the wait staff when it comes to keeping you safe! ✨ Your host will bring you an allergy friendly menu that lists the Top 9 allergies & gluten on the menu. Yachtsman Steakhouse is a Disney Signature Dining, sit down table service restaurant, located at Disney’s Yacht Club resort. It has a New England feel with sophisticated, nautical touches. Reservations are highly recommended and there is a dress code that I would describe as business casual/upscale casual. This restaurant is especially known for their steak and fresh seafood. With a seafood allergy, we stuck with the steak and it did not disappoint! We got the 8oz filet mignon and 16oz ribeye. Both cuts were cooked exactly as requested. The sides were also delicious and both the mac and cheese and creamed spinach were perfect accompaniments for the steak. The drinks were strong and very good and the Brûlée cheesecake dessert sounded like a lot of interesting flavors but it all worked together so well and it was absolutely divine! The meal is definitely on the pricier side, but considering this is a steakhouse at Disney, in my opinion, the price is reasonable. It was also a lot of food and we had leftovers of everything, perfect for midnight snacking.😉 Overall, I would definitely eat there again. It’s 100% possible to eat at buffets or family style restaurants at Disney when managing food allergies. We aren’t ok with possible cross contamination so we actually ask our waiter/waitress when placing our drink order to talk with the chef. We're back! Now that I'm 1) feeling better and 2) done with what's been the most chaotic week I've had since returning from WDW, I've got the next post up for everyone. This one is the food review for Roundup Rodeo BBQ in Disney's Hollywood Studios. This was one of our favorite meals this last trip. So many allergy-safe options, and honestly, the food there reminded me of sitting on the back porch of my grandparents' house for a summer cookout. The flavors here took me back to my childhood in the best way possible. Think the food critic in Ratatouille when he tastes Remy's dish, all of a sudden he was back in his childhood home eating his mom's cooking. This was something special for me. Where are my fellow food allergy friends at? I have a tree nut and stone fruit allergy that I have to be extremely cautious when I eat out. Disney does the best job handling allergies that I’ve ever experienced. They label the food that’s been made on cleaned, allergy safe cooking spaces, and the chef and/or manger always comes out to review your allergies prior to ordering your meal. May is Allergy Awareness month! If you don’t know, our daughter has multiple life threatening food allergies. Walt Disney World was one of the first places that our family felt comfortable eating out. It wasn’t the first place we ate out - but the difference is, we felt *comfortable* doing so. The allergy protocols, the knowledgeable chefs, the helpful cast members… it all makes such a difference! When we go to Disney, I always keep my daughter’s epipens clipped to my “belt bag” (or let’s call it what it is - a fanny pack 🤪) so that they are ready and easily accessible should we ever need them. We don’t ever leave them behind when we go on rides. They are loud and proud in a bright red pouch! 🍫 (vegan ) Chocolate alert🍫 The Ganachery now has a vegan option!!! The new option is a coconut based dark chocolate- warning, I was told there is a cross contamination risk for milk; and coconut is the main ingredient, so if you can’t have or don’t like coconut, then this isn’t for you; I was also given a tree nut warning, I assume it’s because of the coconut, but I’m not 100% sure if other types of tree nuts are used, or could be a cross contamination. I got the six pack. I tried one immediately. 🍱 Allergy-friendly Foodies in Orlando We tagged along with @nwiest88 to a conference in Orlando this weekend @gaylordpalms! The waterpark was AMAZING and little-kid friendly! As always, there was a lot of planning involved, due to food allergies. I was surprised at how many safe snack options there were at the hotel shop. We took individual cereals and boxed milk for breakfast and some hot dogs and chips for Saturday lunch We enjoyed some good foods @disneysprings during our stay: 🍱 Saturday night was a safe feast at @jaleobyjose. My kids will probably never eat amazing gourmet mashed potatoes like these anywhere else! The chef came out and were super helpful! 🧁 We stopped by @erinmckennasbakery for some yummy cupcakes that was safe for all! 🍱 We enjoyed Sunday lunch amongst 🐘 and 🦍 @rainforest_cafe. We were so happy to hear that they now have a dedicated fryer for 🍟! Throwback Thursday!! There are times when the kids are pouting, not looking at the camera, you've eaten too much food, and your husband wants to go back to the room to take a nap. No trip is magical start to finish! And that is just life. This particular trip was when my youngest, Theo, turned 2 years old. And it was also when we found out that my oldest, Joshua, has a life threatening allergy to peanuts. We have learned a lot since then about what it means to vacation as a family and the best way we can all enjoy our time together. And we have also learned how to navigate eating out with a child with food allergies. Our trips still aren't perfect. My husband is an early bird while I'm a night owl. None of us are "open and close the parks" type of people even though we say we're going to try every time. We learned how to talk to chefs about Josh and the best way to advocate for him, which in turn showed him how to advocate for himself living in a dorm as freshman in college. ⚓️ Cape May Cafe ⚓️ Tonight I ate at Cape May Cafe. I was especially excited because my favorite Disney Chef works here (more on him later). I was given an allergy pamphlet with everything on the buffet, so I could just go up and get what I wanted. * I forgot to take pictures of what I actually got * Then came dessert, I asked the server about the dairy free options, and I was given a little plate of dairy free desserts. I also asked if I could speak to Chef Tj, as he was working tonight. Chef Tj is very well known in the Disney allergy community, he makes exceptional plates and platters of food (he’s tagged so go check him out!) When he came to the table we talked for a bit, and he said he remembered me and my sister 🥹. He then asked me if I wanted another dessert, and then he insisted on bringing me another. So he did. He went above and beyond, and it was very good. Thank you again so very much Chef Tj!!! ✨ Be Our Guest ✨ I’ve not done a restaurant/food review in a little bit (disregarding the vegan butterbeer 😂), so here’s my thoughts on BoG. I ate at BoG. It was very good. I have eaten here in the past, just not since I started working at Disney. It is a 3 course, pre-picked menu, you just chose out of the options they have. I was given an allergy menu, and everything was really good. Everyone was able to help help me navigate the menu easily, and I was able to substitute some of the food items that had dairy in it. What I got: Appetizer~ - Rolls and Butter * not pictured; shared by the table, they brought out some margarine (dairy free butter) for me, and said the rolls were dairy free. * - Duck and Pork Terrine * My cousin also ordered this, but the non allergy friendly version, and they looked exactly the same, so I’m not entirely sure what the difference was, but it could have everything to do with mine being made separately, and possibly different ingredients.* Entrée~ - Center Cut Filet Mignon * This came with mashed potatoes, but they were able to substitute the mashed potatoes with roasted potatoes and green beans. Which were all very good * Dessert~ - Vanilla Cake with Lemon Curd * This is their vegan dessert option, and it was very good! * All in all, it was a really good dinner! We sat in the Ballroom by the West Wing. Beast came out twice while we ate; he was a walk around character, you could take pictures, just not with him. This might be the best #allergyfriendly restaurant we have ever been to!! We were only in Orlando for 4 days and we ate dinner @raglanroadpub twice 🍀 They asked about allergies right after they said hello, they have a separate fryer for #glutenfree and other allergens, AND they put tiny pieces of parsley in the gluten free batter so it’s obvious! Amazing. Be sure to double check in person with EPCOTs new (and easy!) allergy procedures Pic 1: grape smoothie with freeze dried skittles at 3/5. The skittles were amazing and I will get more! I had a small sip of the smoothie and it was very sweet. Made with a gelato base, there’s Dairy in the smoothie. Shared equipment warning for all top allergens. Pic 2: Another good option was the Fruit Pizza at 4/5 at the Odyssey building. While watermelon wasn’t very sweet as it isn’t in season, it was flavorful and well priced at 3.75. Balsamic vinaigrette contains soy lethicin and can be removed. No other top allergens. Pic 3: Favorite 10/10 was the Beef Tartare at Canada. Modified without the plant based cheese to remove soy and nuts. It’s labeled for no gluten, dairy, egg, fish or shellfish. Pic 4: Cerulean blue drink 4/5. speciality drinks from Joffreys are fun and festive (plus easy to modify!). Made with Monin flavor, Minute Maid lemonade, tropics mixology base and flavored bobas (some have soy lethicin and dyes). There’s four to choose from around the park. Most ingredients are labeled gluten free. Pic 5: Kabobs made a return (like they have been for every festival) over in Morocco. With the sauce removed there’s no soy or nuts. It’s labeled gluten friendly already and made without egg and dairy. Pic 6: Carrot three ways at 2/5 in Morocco. I feel like they overspice this dish. Labeled for no gluten, dairy, egg, fish or shellfish, there’s also no nuts or soy.
