This week has been genuinely life changing for me. I’m shattered both emotionally and physically so I don’t really have the words to express all of my emotions right now. I have a metric ton of footage and images to process, but this week has been more than that. It’s given me the opportunity to meet some truly phenomenal people, and to visit an island filled with joy and love and hope. I’ve deliberately shut out the outside world and let this incredible place wash over me, literally and metaphorically. Today Raymond and I walked over 8 miles in equatorial heat and both made it through in one piece. Okay, he’s in one piece, I’m in a thousand pieces! But it was a wonderful end to an astonishing week. Thanks to everyone at @animalbalance for giving me this opportunity. I will never forget, and more importantly I will strive to be a better person every day and to help people understand how important this work is. “Through a collection of home video footage, the filmmaker undergoes a journey of reconciliation and healing, grappling with their identity in the face of the past.” A Poem for My Blanket is an experimental-documentary that I made as my graduation piece from Falmouth University, and after being in limbo for the last several months, the film is ready to go to festivals. I don’t think I can put into words what creating this documentary has meant to me. Prior to moving to Bend in 2019, I had no idea public lands…existed. I fell in love with public lands during the pandemic – the Oregon Badlands Wilderness became my small bit of reprieve, where I would hike with my dogs, where I would go on trail runs, and where I would watch many sunsets and sunrises. Eventually it became my playground for dirt bikes and adv riding. Yet the issue of misuse wasn’t brough to my attention until I met @hopperbuilt and started volunteering at clean ups with @plsbend Nature is my church. It has been for many years. The idea that I could do something…anything…to help preserve a piece of that for future generations, and one day my own children, gave me purpose and drive in a way I hadn’t experienced in a long time. Protecting our lands, maintaining access, and preventing shut downs has undoubtedly become an intrinsic part of who I am, and I will keep fighting every day I live and breathe. A story of the abundance of Love within a family that faces unanswerable questions but learns how to move on many years later. When @robviscardis told me the story of @kurtis.watson and his Dad and his tapes in 2020 I knew we needed to start making this Film with him and I was incredibly excited to lens it. Rob and Kurtis sat down together and crafted the outline for what would become this film.
