The weather is definitely heating up and we need to start thinking about how our animals are going to cope. One thing that is often not thought about is...... SUNBURN Dogs can get sunburnt, which can lead to cancer like humans. Pink skinned, hairless and short haired dogs tend to be more susceptible than long haired or black skinned dogs. The areas most prone to sunburn are the muzzle, ears/pinna, around the eyes and the belly. Sunburn in dogs looks similar to us when we are burnt. If your dog's skin has gone white or red, looks like leather, is cracked, the pinna (ear) is curling at the edges or if your dog is tender and sensitive, they may have sunburn. Preventative measures are very much the same as those we use for ourselves. Slip on a UV rash vest to help cover sunburn prone skin. Slop on some sunscreen - Apply the sunscreen several time a day to exposed skin especially around the head, belly, and feet. Remember once is not enough. Please only use Animal Sunscreen. Zinc Oxide is toxic to dogs when ingested. Provide plenty of shade in the backyard for your dog and keep them out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day. Peppermint Cooling Mist 🐾 I did a post the other day on keeping your dogs cool during summer and I had quite a few people asking about the cooling spray so I thought I'd share the very simple recipe again for you! It's so easy to make! In a 50ml spritzer bottle (I reuse the Verage Toner bottles) I put 5 drops of Peppermint essential oil then top it up with water. Done!! Be sure to shake it really well before each use. Lightly spritz over your dog, especially the ears and back of neck but being careful to avoid the eyes, nose and genitals. For extra cooling power, I keep mine in the fridge! Ahhhh so refreshing! You can use this for yourself too! Bonus! But why use Peppermint essential oil? A 2018 study showed that menthol works to cool the body when it’s put on the skin. That's what makes Peppermint such an amazing tool for reducing temperature and fevers. Its also time to think about our dogs and the heat as we head into what loos set to be a hot summer. Did you know that dogs don’t cool off by sweating like us? The main way they cool off is panting. That's why you'll always see them with their tongues out after hard play session or on a hot day. This is also why it’s important to help them stay at a good temperature by making sure they have a cool place to escape the heat and keeping intense play sessions for the cooler parts of the day.
