Post 1,114: The Fatima Mansions (Apr 2024) First up, a bit of a confession. I never really got into Microdisney, the previous band of Mansions main man Cathal Coughlan, at the time. I(t) was an age where the main way of hearing things was via the radio, and - based on not much more than Town To Town - I’d dismissed them as pleasant enough but a bit lightweight. Completely missing the subversive undercurrent beneath the saccharine surface, and not taking the hint that was right there when they titled an album 'We Hate You South African Bastards!'. I’ve since corrected that misconception but the point is that I came in fresh when confronted with the staccato alt.pop of Only Losers Take The Bus one night in 1990 on the late lamented Snub TV; a rich source of inspiration for those of us who stumbled across the show. From the opening lyric ("I’m born again in hail and flame") this was a bold and exhilarating move away from the polished sophisti-pop of Microdisney, into an irresistibly breakneck-paced rail against the possibly-apocryphal Thatcher quote how anyone using a bus after their mid-twenties was “a failure at life”. Presumably the kind of character stalking the run-down Dublin housing estate that inspired their name; a grim counterpoint to the shiny optimism of Microdisney. Post 1,113: World Party (Apr 2024) Starting off in an era when classic British rock and pop textures from the 1960s had yet to set the world on fire in the age of Britpop, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger mused on the future even while stylistically evoking the past. It’s true that he also followed Prince’s well-established path in terms of funky R&B seasoning and in writing, playing, and producing his solo material all largely by himself. Even earlier, he demonstrated that he was very capable of making epic scale music while working with Mike Scott in the Waterboys up until 1985. But Wallinger’s ongoing musical project World Party that kicked off the following year established him as a singular voice. Post 1,110: Gorky's Zygotic Mynci (Mar 2024) I didn't hear Gorky's Zygotic Mynci until 1997. I was living in London at the time and a co-worker at Tower Records put ‘Barafundle’ on in the shop. I couldn't get enough of their psychedelic, folky, proggy, and sometimes medieval sounding pop songs. They sang about wizards, dark nights and lovely days in Welsh and English, and I wanted to know everything about them! In fact, they're one of the reasons I spent a holiday in Wales and bought a very basic book about learning Welsh. I needed to learn at least some of the words and song meanings (this being well before Google Translate). The ‘classic’ Gorky's lineup featured Carmarthen schoolmates Euros Childs (vocals, keyboards), John Lawrence (vocals, guitar), and Richard James (bass guitar). Megan Childs (violin) and Euros Rowlands (drums) had joined by the second album. I should add that many of the band members are multi-instrumentalists, which adds a real variety and depth to their music. There's a timeless quality to their sound; partly the result of not following trends, but also due to some unquestionably brilliant songwriting. I'm starting my Toppermost with Y Ffordd Oren from the 1994 album ‘Tatay’. The Gorky's sound that I know and love starts to emerge on this album. You never know where a Gorky's song might go - it could change genre or language part of the way through. In this one, the laid-back verses are followed by a chorus that rocks out with a fuzzy guitar and shimmering Hammond organ. Post 1,109: Justin Currie (Mar 2024) One adjective that crops up again and again when people write about Del Amitri’s and Justin Currie’s lyrics is ‘cynical’. From Nothing Ever Happens to No, Surrender (or even the Scottish World Cup anthem Don’t Come Home Too Soon), there are innumerable lines which hint at Currie’s doubts that mankind is inherently good, that humanity makes sense, or that love is forever. There is a constant feeling of disillusion and wariness and the cynicism in his words seems like a shield against further disappointment. Even (or especially) the love songs are testament to this sentiment: What I Think She Sees or It’s Never Too Late To Be Alone are prime examples, and even the immortal Be My Downfall is as heartfelt and vulnerable as it is cynical. Currie’s first solo album, ‘What Is Love For’, seems to continue this tradition with the title track listing a number of rhetorical questions: “What is love for? What does it change? Did Joan of Arc drag anyone back from history’s flames? or What does love do? Does it make life worth going through, Keep you safe from the suicide crew?” Despite tracks like the yearning Only Love in the middle of the album, the title track seems to set a tone of cynical resignation. But then, after the seven-and-a-half-minute emblem of contemporary futility, No, Surrender, there follows a hidden track: only ninety seconds long, a low-fi recording of nothing but Justin’s vocals and a couple of fragile piano chords. In The Rain describes just “a second of all my time” but one that he will “take from here”. It is just one brief moment in a doorway in the rain, when “you said ‘angel’ and that is all”, but it is the simple and disarming and completely uncynical response to the album’s initial question: this is why we do it, this is why we hang on to it despite all the disappointments. Post 1,108: Robert Forster (Mar 2024) Robert Forster first came to prominence with the Australian indie band, the Go-Betweens. During his time with them, he established himself as a very fine songwriter and a highly effective, if unorthodox, joint frontman. In the group, he shared the songwriting responsibilities with Grant McLennan, whose skills as a writer perfectly complemented his own. Indeed, the strength of their partnership meant that Forster at first struggled to establish himself as a solo artist. This was particularly the case during the years between the group’s break up in 1989 and their reformation - albeit with a new line up where he and McLennan were the only remaining members from the original band - in 2000. While the albums he recorded during this period were interesting enough - and they contained some excellent songs - it was clear that they were very much ‘transitional’ efforts. The strongest of them was probably his debut, ‘Danger In The Past’, which was produced by Mick Harvey of the Birthday Party and Bad Seeds fame. It also included sympathetic backing from Harvey himself on bass, organ, guitar and percussion and Hugo Race on lead and rhythm guitar. I have chosen the title track from it as my first selection. It clearly shows Forster’s ability to draw deft character sketches which, in the space of a five-minute song, can carry as much weight as many a short story or novel. Post 1,104: Jesse Belvin (Feb 2024) Jesse Belvin died early (at just 27 years old) in February 1960 in a car crash under suspicious circumstances. He managed to cut a ridiculously large number of records in the relatively short amount of time he had. He was born on 15th December 1932 in San Antonio, Texas but the family relocated to Northern California when he was four and then headed south to LA Like many black singers he gained his first vocal experience via the local Baptist Church encouraged by his mother. He won a talent contest arranged by Johnny Otis in 1948. His first recording session came in 1951 as lead singer of Three Dots and a Dash, a vocal group employed by orchestra leader and sax player Big Jay McNeely. The record was All That Wine Is Gone on the Imperial label and, from the deployment of skat from the vocalists, one could characterise them as an early doo wop group We do know that he recorded for Specialty circa ’52 to ’53. He did his bit for the US Army (in West Germany) circa ’53 to ’54. When he got back to LA he signed a contract with Modern Records, initially as a member of the Cliques and then as a solo artist. In ’54 he co-wrote the song Earth Angel for the Penguins. In 1958 he was signed up by RCA Victor. Post 1,103: Manic Street Preachers (Feb 2024) The Manic Street Preachers (a name gifted to them by a homeless man while they were busking) have evolved from a young, loud, politically aware punk band through to the established rock band they are today. Accomplished musicians and cousins, James Dean Bradfield (vocals, lead guitar) and Sean Moore (drums), joined forces with Nicky Wire (bass) and Richey Edwards (rhythm guitar), who provided the lyrics and artistic direction. Richey disappeared in February 1995 and was legally presumed dead in 2008. His presence still looms large over the band through their lyrics and imagery. Rather than provide a detailed history of the band, there are many superb books available for those who wish to delve further, I’m instead focusing on my top 10 Manics tracks. I was born in 1980 and was introduced to the band in the mid 90s, around the time of Richey’s disappearance. The Manics, minus Richey, triumphantly returned during the Britpop era and, from that point onwards, the Manics cemented themselves as one of my favourite bands. I’m generally more drawn towards music and melodies, but the Manics are a band who have also always fascinated me lyrically, which I will explore a little during this article. Post 1,102: Young Jessie (Feb 2024) Rock and Roll and its immediate precursor and ongoing soulmate, Rhythm and Blues, were driven initially by independent labels. Almost inevitably with the forces of conservatism controlling the majors, the presence of such indies, usually with hustling businessmen driving them, and taking risks with their musical output, was essential for breakthroughs to occur. The big ones, Sun and later Stax (both in Memphis), Atlantic (in New York) and Chess (in Chicago) are now household names. Others aren’t. In particular, that grouping of labels that were formed in Los Angeles after the Second World War to address the burgeoning music scene there are almost as important as Sun etc., particularly to a black audience. Most significant are the trio of Specialty, Imperial and Modern. Specialty had Little Richard. Imperial had Fats Domino. Modern may be the least well-known of the three but it was the earliest established. It was formed by the Bihari brothers, Joe, Jules and Saul in 1945 and, with its subsidiary RPM, had Lightnin’ Hopkins, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, the early Howlin’ Wolf, the early Bobby Bland and . . . Young Jessie. She can sing like a bird. She can write a song so catchy it stays in my head for hours. She is not the teenybopper act that her critics accuse her of. She saved guitar sales - inspiring young women and girls to take up the instrument. Her achievements aren’t just of the musical kind. She is a noted philanthropist. Post 1,098: Jonas Brothers (Jan 2024) I spent a decade being laughed at for my love of Nick Jonas, Kevin Jonas and Joe Jonas as people on my side of the water had no idea who they were. I discovered them after the death of my father when I escaped to Walt Disney World, one of our favourite places. At that point Jonas Brothers were on Hollywood Records, the Disney label, and indeed the first time I heard them was on Radio Disney. I literally jumped out of the shower after hearing S.O.S to write down the artist and went straight to Disney Village to pick up the sophomore self-titled album. And I never looked back. Then they came to the UK and supported Avril Lavigne. I got to just stroll my way to the front row for that show. They played a stellar gig, even had a grand piano which I have never seen for a support act, and seeing Joe Jonas dancing on that piano was a magical Kendall moment. We even got Big Rob, who was the security, playing his bit on Burnin’ Up which is an incredible image, one of my favourite Jonas songs to this day. Post 1,097: The Radio Dept. (Jan 2024) Are they dream pop or shoegaze? Indie or electronic? In the case of Swedish band The Radio Dept., the answer is all of the above. They're my favorite post-2000 band, coming out on Labrador Records but sounding quite different from their labelmates. Hearing The Radio Dept. for the first time, I immediately loved the mix of fuzzy guitars, washes of synth, and casually understated vocals. The core duo of Johan Duncanson (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Martin Carlberg (guitar, bass, keyboards) has remained the same through various iterations, with Daniel Tjäder (keyboards/synth) rounding out the lineup. I'm starting my top ten with Pulling Our Weight, from the 2003 EP of the same name. This track sums up everything I love about the band. Post 1,096: Gaz Coombes (Jan 2024) "Freak Scene by Dinosaur Jr was one of the first songs we learned to play in my first band, the Stone Heads. It was the song that made me want to be in a band.” (Gaz Coombes) Not a bad track to set you on your way. It's a bit wild to think that, as part of Supergrass, Gaz Coombes was only 17 when he signed a 6-album record deal with EMI. Supergrass were a very underrated band and solid live act, often overlooked in the era of Blur and Oasis. In 2012, he tried to escape the shadow of Supergrass with his debut solo album ‘Here Come The Bombs’ which showed some promise of what was to come, as he continued with clever lyrics and catchy melodies. White Noise and Universal Cinema were the standout tracks for me. He has since recorded a trilogy of albums, each getting better in turn as he finds his solo voice and identity. The first in the trilogy, released in 2015, was the Mercury Prize nominated ‘Matador’ where he was still struggling with the transition to solo artist and pondering "the uncertainty of WTF am I going to sound like on my own". But he need not have worried about that, creating a stellar record including songs, like Detroit, Buffalo, 20/20 and a heartfelt song called The Girl Who Fell To Earth which was about his daughter who has autism. Post 1,094: Vic Chesnutt (Dec 2023) In 1998, aimless and unsure of what I wanted to do with my life, I decided to pack up and move from the city in which I was raised to the sleepy college town of Athens, GA. I had always lived in GA and had visited Athens a number of times for concerts or to visit the University as I was nearing high school graduation and trying to figure out what’s next. Its legendary status as a hotbed of new music was well-deserved - from Pylon to the B-52s to R.E.M. to more little-known acts such as Dreams So Real and Love Tractor, the bands that called Athens home were the soundtrack to my teenage years. At the same time that I was wandering through life waiting for the next leap forwards, Athens was experiencing another in a long line of musical renaissances with the emergence of the Elephant 6 collective of bands. Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, of Montreal, and Elf Power were the big names at the time that had settled in or were from the area. I will admit wanting to immerse myself in this burgeoning scene did play a part in my decision to move the 4 hours northeast, harboring my own dreams of falling in with like-minded musicians and ‘making it’, but the single biggest draw for me was I wanted to be closer to Vic Chesnutt. I wanted to live in the same city and walk the same streets and see him play gigs and run into him outside of Wuxtry Records or The Taco Stand. There was nothing in my hometown holding me back so off I went. I’m a recent convert to the church of Squeeze and its various branches and I’m at the stage where I just want to clamp headphones on to stranger’s heads (because clamping them elsewhere would be pointless and a bit weird) and make them listen to everything from the ‘Packet Of Three’ EP up to ‘The Knowledge’ album and everything in between. It was during Squeeze’s second hiatus that Glenn Tilbrook released his debut solo album, ‘The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook’, in 2001. Glenn’s second solo album, ‘Transatlantic Ping Pong’, arrived in 2004. His third album, ‘Pandemonium Ensues’ (2009) was released under the name ‘Glenn Tilbrook & The Fluffers’. Post 1,092: Colin Blunstone (Dec 2023) Denny Laine’s death, in December 2023, reminds us that he was more than a singer and guitarist in two of the biggest bands of the Sixties and Seventies (the Moody Blues and Wings). He also wrote a brilliant hit single – Say You Don’t Mind, recorded by the former Zombies vocalist Colin Blunstone in 1971. This song dates back to 1967, originating as part of Laine’s post-Moodies’ project, the Electric String Band. It went unnoticed back then but resurrected by Blunstone four year later, it’s every bit the perfect chamber pop hit. Laine’s song was in good hands. Colin Blunstone was one of the voices of the Sixties. If you are not familiar with his solo records, you may well know ‘Odessey and Oracle’, the Zombies’ 1968 cult classic. Or She’s Not There, the hit that launched Blunstone’s career. As well as being a Top 20 hit early in 1972, Say You Don’t Mind is also the closer to what is, really, a perfect album: One Year. I could have filled this run-down with all ten songs from this record. From the summery, minor-key opener, She Loves The Way They Love Her – written by the Zombies and originally recorded in 1968 for an abandoned album – through to Say You Don’t Mind, it’s “the story of a year of mine”, as Colin puts it in the original liner notes. Post 1,091: Chris Stapleton (Dec 2023) Chris Stapleton moved to Nashville in 2001 and began his musical career as a songwriter, penning tracks for George Strait, Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw among others. Whilst continuing his songwriting, Stapleton fronted two bands - bluegrass outfit The SteelDrivers and Southern Rock band The Jompson Brothers. Neither band had commercial success but both built up a cult following, particularly in the southern states. Stapleton’s solo career took off in 2015 with his debut album ‘Traveller’. His distinctive growl, supported by harmonies from his wife, Morgane, over classic Americana saw him quickly became a household name in the US and across the globe. He has subsequently released four further genre-spanning albums, touching on country, folk, bluegrass, soul, blues and rock. He’s also had further commercial success collaborating with artists such as Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake. The 10 tracks I’ve chosen span Stapleton’s career, as both a band member and solo artist, featuring hit singles but also some ‘deep cuts’. They’re also the tracks that hold a special place in my musical heart. Before my children were born, my wife and I went on a US holiday with my parents in 2016, visiting Nashville, Memphis, Chicago and New Orleans. Post 1,090: Martha and the Muffins (Dec 2023) I was living and working in the East End of London in the late 1990s as an ancestry VISA immigrant from Toronto when the unlikely subject of Martha and the Muffins came up in conversation at my place of work. A colleague of mine, I suppose knowing that the band were Canadian like I am, told me how much she loved Echo Beach. That song had been the band’s sole hit in Britain and in other regions other than Canada. It was a great point of reference for me and my Londoner colleague, both of us working very boring jobs as office clerks. That conversation got me thinking about that song and that band. I’d grown up hearing their singles on the radio and loved them in the 1980s when I was a school kid turned teenager. But by the next decade, I’d kind of thought of them as something of a cultural given. While away and out of my cultural context, I began to be more mindful of what Canadian artists had accomplished on the world stage. As for this band, they are pioneers of Canadian art rock, hitting early as proponents of authentically homegrown punk and new wave out of Toronto’s fertile Queen Street West scene. Post 1,089: Senseless Things (Dec 2023) Starting at what I’m now forced to admit is the end – the Shepherds Bush Empire March 2017 One Night Stand reunion gig. A sell-out crowd of mainly 40- and 50-somethings as excitable as their teenage selves in the anticipation. The lights dim and the crowd hushes as the eerie theme music from the nostalgic sci-fi show Stranger Things plays. What looks like the show’s logo emerges on the screen at the back of the stage. When the logo is revealed to read Senseless Things, the crowd cheers. And with perfect timing, the band enters and strikes up the first notes of Everybody’s Gone. The opening track from the 1991 album ‘The First Of Too Many’ (not their debut album despite the title), Everybody’s Gone encapsulates the Senseless Things’ sound – at once more poppy, more punky and more wistful than the contemporaries they were often lazily lumped in with. Tonight, guitarist Ben Harding is wearing a t-shirt proclaiming Punk, Not Fraggle, a nod to the dismissive NME-invented genre that they never wanted to be part of. A fantastic way to start what would be their last performance. The end because Senseless Things singer and songwriter Mark Keds died in January 2021. This top 10 list has taken me ages to compile, the words have been difficult to write because I wanted it to be a fitting tribute to Mark and the songs he wrote.
