‘Con Air’ is dumb, mindless action… and because of that it is so much fun and awesome to witness. Behind all out performances from a great cast, what could’ve been a dumb action movie becomes a cult classic. Though Nicholas Cage’s accent may be bad, everything else about his performance is awesome. From the air to the muscles, you have an iconic Nic Cage character. John Malkovich goes all out with his performance as Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom and Ving Rhames is equally deliciously evil as “Diamond Dog”. John Cusack is also someone I will never get tired of watching on screen and he delivers a fun performance as U.S. Marshal Vince Larkin. Dave Chappelle and Steve Buscemi’s character feel somewhat tacked on, but they both have some fun moments. The rest of the cast is also littered with more great actors, like Trejo and Ticotin. The action scenes are what everyone is here for, and they are well worth the price of admission. The ending scene and ensuing chase in Las Vegas, while illogical, is fun to watch. What I can’t argue with is how awesome it is to see Cameron Poe reunite with his family while, “How Do I Live” by Trisha Yearwood blasts in the background. ‘Con Air’ is the definition of what an action summer popcorn blockbuster should be. Hey y’all! Happy #geekteefriday but also happy first contact day. How we all doing? This week has been boring as, so not many pictures taken I usually take them over the weekend but only took one last weekend as we just chilled and watched tv most weekend. Finished Hazbin hotel which I’ve got the sound track on repeat in the car. Took long enough for us to get there after the pilot. Anyway since it is first contact day you’ll have to put up with a few pics of me with Star Trek guests and apparently a shirt that I’ve not shared on here. Star Trek shirts are easy to find as they tend to be red. Also I got a new toy and some racking and of course I need more racking! I must say the Bambu is absolutely amazing! Next weekend I’ll be up North at Catterick for a 36 hr milsim, so just trying to get all the pyro and gear ready! Mischief has been finding new places to chill and yup this is the place apparently! Película épica donde las haya es sin duda esta cinta dirigida por Ron Howard quien también coescribe el guión. Una historia sobre la ambición, pero la bien entendida, la que hace que un hombre persiga sus sueños. Un hombre que lucha (a veces, literalmente) por lograr la libertad de labrar su propia tierra y no estar sometido a los caprichos de su terrateniente en su Irlanda natal. Pero también que lucha por un amor difícil, un amor separado por clases. Es una cinta en la que la ambientación lo es todo. Desde Irlanda rural hasta la conquista del Medio Oeste, pasando por un Boston en constante crecimiento social, industrial y demográfico gracias a las constantes oleadas de inmigrantes en busca del sueño americano. De hecho, es la parte más interesante y cruda del film, donde se las ven y se las desean para sobrevivir y donde el personaje femenino se desarrolla más en su maduración como persona. Una más que Bella ambientación que logra su cénit gracias a su banda sonora obra de John Williams y su bella fotografía. Tom Cruise y Nicole Kidman repiten como pareja protagonista tras Dias de trueno. En esta ocasión los acompañan Colm Meaney (Layer Cake), Thomas Gibson (La edad de la inocencia), Robert Prosky (Sin perdón), Michelle Johnson (La muerte os sienta tan bien), Barbara Babcock (Space cowboys), Eileen Pollock (Las cenizas de Angela) y Cyril Cusack (Chaval). “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” brings Liam Neeson’s usual senior citizen bad assery to 1970’s Northern Ireland where there’s a bit of political unrest happening in the background of what is an otherwise pretty simple, straight forward thriller. Neeson plays Finbar Murphy, a hired assassin looking to hang his hat up just as he’s been forced to murder the brother of a ruthless woman named Doirean (Kerry Condon), who will do everything in her power to make sure he’s avenged. Ciarán Hinds, Jack Gleeson, and Colm Meaney round out a supporting cast that seasons a been-there-done-that story with just enough spice to keep the fire from going out. Condon is especially good, baring fangs you’d never think she had and providing Neeson with an actual challenge for a change. While there’s more to some of these characters that I wish I got to know, “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” scratches an itch to get to the point at a reasonably brisk one hour and forty-six minute running time. I liked it and while I didn’t love it, it is the best thing Neeson has done in a while. As much as I’m fed up with seeing #LiamNeeson continuously revisit the same character he’s played his entire career, “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” proves that formula can be done well. While this #Thriller also regurgitates existing revenge narratives, cinematography and performance are the main keys in raising this one a notch above typical Neeson fodder. Amazing shots of the #Ireland landscape and crisp direction from #RobertLorenz will make you wish this got an advanced release ahead of #StPatricksDay. Neeson, though never really breaking free from that typecast role, gives a noble enough performance alongside the rest of the cast. #TheBansheesOfInisherin star #KerryCondon does great in bringing a ruthlessness to Doireann’s personality. She’s incredibly menacing in her mission of vengefully hunting down Finbar. I could easily dismiss its justice-seeking storyline for all of the familiar turns it takes, but style and execution strangely elevate the utter predictability. The tensity in violence is slowly built, as opposed to coming off cartoonish in excess. Neeson’s at home when he’s protecting those who can’t protect themselves, and it’s great to see a filmmaker finally place his characters passion in an aesthetically pleasing package. There’s just enough emotion evoked by its cast to compliment Lorenz ‘s #Western influences. It may be undeniably formulaic. You will see where it’s going from the start. “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” just runs with its paint-by-numbers tale of seeking absolution from sin by making the most out of its picturesque setting, Condon and Neeson. Last night's viewing: The Damned United One way to make me happy, combine my two great passions: Football and Film. The Damned United charts (in a nonlinear format) Brian Clough's rise as Derby County manager through to his ill fated tenure as Leeds United boss (Boo Leeds, boo. I'm a Leicester supporter, I can hate Leeds at the moment). Although historical accuracy has been called into question, that shouldn't be focused on whilst assessing the film in it's own right. As a piece of cinema it is engaging, entertaining and all contained in a neat 98 minute runtime. Although Clough was long before my time, I have been informed that Michael Sheen's portrayal is a very good one. I certainly enjoyed his performance along with supporting performances from Timothy Spall as Peter Taylor and Colm Meaney as Don Revie. The whole film is very well acted. The film is quite grainy and at times soft looking which helps it to blend nicely with the stock footage used. It's actually quite a stylish piece of cinema. My big takeaway is just how much the game has changed. Star Trek The Next Generation - Ultimate Foes (1987 - 1994) My recent post for the Wonder Years reminded me of this collection for The Next Gen, as they were shown on opposite channels at the same time at the turn of the 90’s, and it was always a dilemma which one took priority. I wanted to keepsake both so the operation was for sister to catch one while I caught the other! Oh what fun, if we knew then what we know now, with most things widely available for streaming and dvd boxsets nowadays. What was the worry!! 🤗 Anyway I loved this series so much, of which there were many high points of drama and action, but especially on the occasions when the Borg turned up and equally Q, played to perfection by John De Lancie. “Helping” us mere humans how to play out morality plays and who could take the high ground. No Way Up is een van de eerste rampenfilms die geschikt is voor mensen met vliegangst, watervrees of angst voor haaien. No Way Up is namelijk een overdreven en mislukte rampenfilm die de angsten van deze mensen zo zou kunnen wegtoveren. De rampenfilm is zo chaotisch slecht dat het enigszins humoristisch is om te aanschouwen. No Way Up levert een reeks vervelende, vreselijke en onhandige gebeurtenissen die elkaar snel opvolgen. Toch voelen deze gebeurtenissen niet verdient of oprecht aan. Bovendien zijn deze momenten niet sterk opgezet in het verhaal. De film zit ook nog eens vol met willekeurige en plotselinge traumatische achtergrondverhalen die de film alleen maar remmen, in plaats van dat ze het verhaal onderbouwen of ondersteunen. Het helpt ook niet dat No Way Up continuïteitsproblemen in zijn film heeft. Bloedvlekken verdwijnen van het ene op het andere moment en een kapsel dat in een vorige scène nat was, is in de volgende scène (onverklaarbaar) droog. Technisch zit de film ook niet sterk in elkaar. Het camerawerk van cinematograaf Andrew Rodger is belabberd. Zijn camerawerk is regelmatig te schommelig. Daarnaast zijn de kaders uit zijn camerawerk ook niet best te noemen. De kaders waarin verhaaldetails bekend worden gemaakt zijn zo slecht dat je belangrijke plotpunten gemakkelijk kunt missen: zoals een haai dat dreigend voorbij een raam van een neergestort vliegtuig zwemt. De montage van filmmonteur van Adam Recht is ook bagger. Vooral in de gevechtsscènes of filmmomenten waarin rampen gebeuren, stelt Recht in zijn montage teleur. De filmmonteur knipt en plakt de beelden zo snel achter elkaar dat de film onduidelijk te volgen is tijdens deze scènes. Het oogt te chaotisch. De computer gegenereerde beelden en praktische effecten zijn net zo slap. De nagemaakte lichamen, van de mensen die verdronken zijn, zien er nep uit. Ze bewegen en zien er uit als poppen. De computer gegenereerde beelden van de haaien zien er regelmatig nog nepper uit. Is er dan niets goed op te noemen over No Way Up?
