What happened to people before there were doctors? They died is what happened! - says a lot of people who are convinced hospitals are the safest place to give birth. History, or her-story, shows that traditional Midwives had a huge understanding of birth and how to truly care for their wards. Hand washing was just done, either in warm water, or using alcohol. Those giving birth were encouraged to make use of the space around them, movement, instinctive pushing, physiological or holistically managed placenta births, rather than the "professional doctor" way of birthing on their backs, legs up in stirrups, with manual removal of the placenta. It's no wonder infection rates were through the roof. Birth did not become safer when it moved into hospitals, and the procedures and interventions that were then introduced, were brought in to fix the problems that were happening as a result of the move to institutional birthing. Synthetic oxytocin to manage slower labours and stop haemorrhage, chainsaws invented to break public bones to allow babies more space in a supine mother, forceps to avoid breaking public bones, routine episiotomies, CTG, routine IV placements, refusal of food in labour. Evidence shows, time and time again, that birth works best when it's left to unfold undisturbed and unhurried. Hospitals, and modern medicine, are an incredible resource for those who genuinely need them, they are quite literally life saving. Over feeding I have heard so much recently about over feeding a breastfed baby and it is still baffling now! It is very, very hard to over feed a breastfeed baby straight from the breast! Babies are magic, they know when to stop (unlike myself when the choccy comes out)They are amazing at self regulating at the breast though! Now it IS possible to over feed from a bottle. This does include breast milk! If you are feeding your baby from a bottle its a good idea to follow a paced bottle method of feeding. This technique allows parents to mimic the form of breastfeeding and stopping the baby from just slurping down a whole bottle of milk! This is also great to have some beautiful bonding time again, having lots of eye contact and inducing the hormone oxytocin, win win! Some great tips for pace feeding are:- 🍼Hold baby close 🍼Hold them in an upright position 🍼hold the bottle in a horizontal position 🍼wait for baby to beging sucking 🍼Tilt the bottle so that the teat half fills with milk 🍼allow baby to drink for between 20-30 seconds 🍼Tilt bottle down with teat still in babies mouth 🍼when baby starts sucking again bring the bottle back to the start position 🍼 Continue for whole feed. The baby will finish when they are ready with this method and we need to trust the process if they haven' taken the full feed. It can be hard to leave milk in the bottle and we can worry about getting enough. A sure fire way of knowing is if a baby is settled after feeding. They are having wet and dirty nappies and then lastly weight gain. Following feeding cues is also a great way of making sure babies are getting enough! 26 weeks 🌻 Cravings and nesting have gone crazy this past couple of weeks. I can't get enough of fruit! Lots of braxton hicks contractions. That's normal for me at this stage. I'm feeling great and loving how relaxed I'm feeling about this pregnancy and birth. So you're not sure whether you want to use water as a pain relief option in birth? A lot of clients think that it's all or nothing - you have to want to give birth in a pool to take advantage of this. I'm here to tell you that using water is a great tool, irrespective of your wishes for the actual birth. Allowing warm water to ease any back discomfort especially is so beneficial in labour - so use the shower at home, or take a bath. You'll instinctively relax. You could get creative and incorporate the birth ball too, like in this photo from @authenticbirthcenter Did you use water in childbirth? I did with my eldest (laboured in the pool), and was planning to with my youngest, but she had other ideas!
