During the Second World War, 1,088 tankers were torpedoed, bombed, mined or scuttled. Many of these remain at the bottom of the seabed where they were first, slowly leaking oil and posing a continued risk to the local environment. One of these is the British tanker El Grillo. The 7,264-ton tanker was carrying 2,000-tons bunker oil when two German Folke-Wolfe 200 Condor bombers came upon it in a fjord near Seyðisfjörður, an Allied base on the east coast of Iceland. The aircraft bombed and damaged the ship enough for the captain to decide to scuttle it, so that it would not become a target and be a danger to other ships. The ship sank on 10 February 1944. El Grillo still rests at the bottom of the fjord, a popular local dive site but also an environmental hazard as it continues to leak oil. Microplastics pose a great threat to human health. These tiny plastic debris can enter our bodies through the water we drink and increase the risk of illnesses. They are also an environmental hazard. To combat this emerging pollutant, researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore have designed a sustainable hydrogel to remove microplastics from water. Officials have revealed that elevated levels of cadmium have been detected in eight workers at the J & B Metal Co smelting factory in Samut Sakhon province, sparking health concerns and prompting further investigations into cadmium exposure in the region. The discovery follows recent findings of improperly stored cadmium waste in both Samut Sakhon and Chon Buri provinces. Public Health Inspector Dr Kitti Kanpirom reported that out of 19 workers tested at the factory, eight showed unsafe cadmium levels and have since become ill, while the remaining 11 also had cadmium present in their bodies but displayed no symptoms. All affected individuals were sent to Samut Sakhon Hospital for examination and treatment. The Ministry of Public Health has also initiated the collection of food and water samples near the factory for cadmium testing. Similar tests are being conducted in Chon Buri, where cadmium waste was discovered in a warehouse and surrounding residential areas. The recent surge in health concerns correlates with the identification of 8,474 tonnes of cadmium waste at various locations, believed to be part of a larger illegal sale of cadmium tailings. Authorities are still searching for the remainder of the waste, which is suspected to total 13,832 tonnes, originally sold from a landfill in Tak province. This led to a two-month placement in New Zealand over the summer, and ultimately the opportunity to pursue a PhD after I finished my studies in the UK. You know what REALLY upsets me…Blatant Disregard. I pick up these six pack rings every time I come across them. It’s the very least I can do but it’s something. I’m all for markets and vendors but there needs to be structure and regulations of some kind. Pick up your trash. Leave the environment the way you found it or make it better. This situation is getting worse and worse by the day. It smells. You can see the wildlife that has to struggle with all the trash. There’s turtles and countless species of birds trying to exists here. I’ve seen alligators here too. Imagine mucking through garbage and grease/oil filled water to eat and live. Its hard to see everyday. I’ve done trash clean ups on weekends. I’ve reported it to the city. I’ve made police reports. I can only do so much. Our neighborhood was permanently impacted by the disastrous and harmful experience of the grass fire hazard. The quick spread of the fire over the parched grasslands served as an alarming example of how delicate and vulnerable our ecosystem is. The dangerous air quality during the fire made it difficult for many residents to breathe and cause health concerns. Families were forced to relocate, and daily life became difficult as evacuations were required to guarantee the community's safety. It was impressive how quickly local authorities and firefighters responded, putting out great effort to confine and put out the fire. As they put their lives in danger to defend our houses and ensure our safety, their bravery and devotion were clearly visible. Ultimately, the threat posed by grass fires was a terrible occurrence that brought to light the vulnerability of both our community and nature. Costa Brava Diving Fest @costabravasub took place earlier this month. It was a weekend dedicated to sustainable diving that aimed to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals into underwater activities. Earlier this week, DEM's Office of Emergency Response (OER) received a report from a concerned citizen about a barrel that had washed ashore near Green Hill Beach in South Kingstown. After an initial search, OER staff located a 55-gallon barrel of diesel next to a section of the beach that is fenced off for piping plover habitat. Fortunately, the barrel was sealed and there was no release of diesel. With the assistance of @rhodeislandema, OER staff were able to remove the barrel from the beach, which will be taken to a reclamation facility for petroleum products. While it is impossible to confirm where the barrel originated from because there were no visible labels or markings remaining, these barrels are commonly used on large commercial vessels. It is not uncommon for items that are not secured properly on the deck of a ship to accidentally roll off in rough seas. There are also a few indicators that the barrel was not originally from this area, including an abundance of Gooseneck Barnacles (Lepas anserifera) found on the barrel, which are not common in our waters. This species of barnacle is usually found in warmer waters down in Florida and the Caribbean. The barnacles were quite large, indicating that the barrel may have been at sea for some time. It is likely that the Gulf Stream, potentially assisted by last week’s storm, carried the drum up the coast where it was deposited into our coastal waters. #TeamDEM thanks RIEMA and our OER responders for the great teamwork in removing the potential hazard! UAE's National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued orange and yellow alerts today due to dusty weather in parts of Abu Dhabi. Residents, especially in Habshan, are advised to prepare for a dust storm until 4.30pm. Drivers should slow down for poor visibility. Lung cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among men in Malaysia after colon cancer, and 3rd most common among both men and women. There is also a growing phenomenon that more women who do not smoke are suffering from lung cancer. Dr Tho Lye Mun, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Beacon Hospital and President of the Lung Cancer Network Malaysia (LCNM), commented that half of his patients are actually non-smokers. Although the causes are not always apparent, it could be linked to environmental exposure. This may also be due to a person's sensitivity to environmental toxins. Some people may be more genetically resistant to developing DNA damage, while others may be more susceptible. Unfortunately, we do not know which group we fall into. This is why prevention by quitting smoking and being aware of other environmental hazards is key.
