We are looking for some special volunteers…. Can you help us?? This year we have x3 brilliant characters joining us across the Carnival weekend - 10th & 11th of August - and we need volunteers to bring these costumes to life. Characters play a vital role in helping us raise money for our local charities - who this year are : Hengistbury Head Outdoors @pinkchampagnedb and @the_listening_ear Last year Bluey brought home heavy donation buckets. So if you fancy helping us raise vital funds for some fantastic local charities please read on. Typically you are in the costume for about half an hour at a time and we have a changing tent in our backstage area for privacy. We are also looking for chaperones: each character needs a chaperone, their role is to carry a charity bucket, help direct the characters around (i.e ensure they don't bump into things) making sure they take regular breaks and helping with getting the costume on and off. Saturday 10th the characters will be located on Christchurch Quay, between 11 - 5 and Sunday 11th they will be located in the high street during the parade and ideally back on the Quay after the parade has finished, between 12 - 4. This is a perfect volunteer role for friends, duos or couples. If you love being a bit silly, especially around children then this is a perfect role for you. Everyone say a big hello 👋 to the youngest member of the Christchurch carnival committee, Ryan. Ryan has volunteered for several years over the carnival weekend and finally joined as a committee member two years ago. “The best bit of the weekend has got to be the food!….and seeing all the people who come, enjoying the event.” Ryan is a key part of our road crew on Sunday morning, helping to put out the road barriers for the parade and collecting them back in at the end of the day with Tony & Kelly. There are many different ways to get involved with Christchurch Carnival, from support over the weekend to help beforehand. From litter picking, selling raffle tickets, helping with road closures or poster and leaflet distribution. There are so many ways to get involved. This year marks the 200th year of lifesaving for the RNLI, which is quite a milestone. The RNLI will be back once again this year at Christchurch Carnival, so you will be able to shop the new ‘200’ range of souvenir items and help their life saving efforts at the same time. On the Saturday you will barely see him in the main arena, spending his time greeting all the acts, doing sound checks with Rich from bigwease event services and making sure the whole crew are topped up with water and ice lollies - Swipe ➡️ On Sunday however Steve whips out his (unfortunately only metaphorical) top hat and turns ringmaster to the Staffie and Stray Rescue dog show. ‘I love dogs, so presenting the dog show is very enjoyable. She wears many hats, both behind the scenes and on the day of the carnival, boy does this girl get stuff done! Kelly has been with Christchurch Carnival since 2010 and she has overseen just about every element of carnival creation.
