My daughter loves these! Did you know not all spaghetti hoops are vegan? Many, including Heinz, contain a type of vitamin D (D3)* which is derived from sheep’s wool. This variety of hoops is vegan though and contains more veg than others. Plus, the half sized tin makes it perfect for vegan children! This was 45p in Asda. There are now quite a few in my Mum’s cupboard ready for “Lunch at Granny’s!” *non-vegan vitamin D is also in a lot of cereals, including many by Kellogg’s. Something to look out for when shopping.

Feeding our vegan kids is a full time job and the added challenge of "getting" them to eat their vegetables doesn't make it any easier, right? On today's podcast🎙️, I am taking you behind-the-scenes of 5 strategies I personally do at home (and teach vegan parents) to help my daughter try and eat her vegetables. I don't use any pressuring tactics, food play, fancy utensils or colorful plates, or even bring attention to the vegetables🥦. I simply give her the space, exposure, and my presence to help her through this journey. Want to hear how you can help your vegan kids too? Head over to my ✨link in bio✨to listen and let me know what strategy you'll try at home!

Today me and Jack had @forksoverknives family edition sloppy Joe on pitta bread with salad and hummus. This was made with buckwheat and red lentils. This recipe full of calcium, iron, fat, protein, ect. He also had a portion of fruit afterwards as vitamin C aids iron absorption. Jack had a lot more seeds on his plate too. We’ve then had pesto pasta for dinner made without oil with roasted vegetables and salad. All these meals meeting a 4 year olds nutritional needs. #raisingvegankids #healthywholefoods #wholefoodplantbaseddiet #nooil #healthykidsmeals #buckwheat #lentils #sloppyjoes #raisingplantbasedkids #uk_veganfamily #feedingvegankids #veganfood

Red lentil and black bean chilli So I think everyone has their own version of chilli and here is mine. No fancy ingredients, just lots of spices, 2 types of beans and some red lentils for extra protein and iron. I also like to add some dark chocolate as I think it adds a nice richness and depth of flavour. The recipe makes quite a large batch to serve 8 and I usually freeze half. Give it a try and let me know what you think 😍 Ingredients 1 tbsp oil Large red onion, finely chopped 2 x red peppers, chopped 1 tsp salt 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1/2 red chilli, finely chopped 1/2 tsp chilli powder 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp dried oregano 2 tbsp tomato purée 500ml vegetable stock 150g red lentils 3 x 400g tins of @mr_organic chopped tomatoes 2 x 400g tins @mr_organic black beans, drained and rinsed 2 x 400g tins @mr_organic red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 25g dark chocolate Salt/pepper Juice of a lime Fresh coriander 1️⃣ In a large pan, fry the onion, red peppers and a tsp of salt in a tbsp of oil for 5-10 mins, adding the garlic and chilli for the last couple of minutes 2️⃣ Add all of the spices, the oregano and the tomato purée and cook for another couple of minutes 3️⃣ Add the stock, lentils, tomatoes, both beans and the dark chocolate and simmer for about an hour, stirring regularly 4️⃣ Finally, add the juice of a lime and season to taste with lots of salt and pepper and serve with lots of fresh coriander #beanchilli #veganchilli #vegchilli #blackbeanchilli #lentilchilli #chillirecipe #chilli #veganprotein #blackbeans #veganbowls #veganmeals #vegandinner #vegandinners #plantbaseddinner #plantbased #planbasedmeals #organic #organicvegan #organicingredients #veganmeals #veganuary #easyveganmeals #veganfamilymeals #feedingvegankids #plantbasedprotein #veganbowls

Tofu tikka masala I’ve been wanting to share this one for a while so here it is, finally. Lovely chunks of tofu marinated in spiced yoghurt then cooked in a creamy, tomatoey sauce. My version isn’t exactly authentic as it has peppers and spinach but I like the addition of the extra veg – so up to you; it will also work well without. This is great as an easy mid week option (and don’t be put off by the slightly longer list of ingredients here, I promise you this is still a very easy one to make). Ingredients for the sauce 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 onion, chopped Thumb-sized piece of ginger, finely chopped 1 red pepper (sliced) 1 yellow pepper (sliced) 2 garlic gloves, minced 1 red chilli, finely chopped 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp garam masala 1/2 tsp ground turmeric 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 large fresh tomatoes, roughly chopped 400g tin chopped tomatoes 400ml tin of coconut milk 200g spinach Lots of coriander Juice of a lime For the tofu: 400g block firm tofu (pressed for at least an hour) 4 tbsp soy yoghurt 1/2 tsp turmeric 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp garam masala 1/2 tsp salt 1️⃣ To make the tofu, mix the yoghurt with the spices and salt , chop the pressed tofu into bite size pieces and marinate in the yoghurt mix whilst you prepare the sauce 2️⃣ In a large pan, fry the onion, garlic, sliced peppers, ginger and chilli in 1 tbsp of the oil for 4-5 mins 3️⃣ Add the spices and fresh tomatoes and continue to cook for another 5 mins. 4️⃣ Add the coconut milk and tinned tomatoes to the pan stir well and cook for 10 minutes or so 5️⃣ Whilst the sauce is cooking, fry the marinated tofu in a separate frying pan with the other tbsp of oil for about 10 mins until slightly browned. 6️⃣ Finally, add the spinach to the sauce and stir through to wilt. Add the tofu to the pan, mix well, add some lime juice and coriander and serve with naans or rice (or both). #tikkamasala #veganmasala #curry #vegancurry #vegancurries #easycurryrecipe #veganuary

**FOODFLO Full Review!!** Kim here! Last month my husband & I tried several meal delivery services to help control portions, lose weight & eat healthier! An absolute stand out among these options was @foodflo - wow! I LOVED every single item on the menu. The entrees were filling. I ate spaghetti squash for the FIRST TIME in my life 😂 & discovered it is fantastic!! The cons are that delivery locations are limited (LA & Orange County, plus many cities in CA/AZ/NV) & it is a bit too expensive for me for every week (it was $169 for 6 entrees, 2 salads & 1 soup) but I will DEFINITELY be ordering it in the future as a treat!!! #whatveganseat #vegansofIG #HawkeyeVegan #iowavegan #budgetvegan #plantbased #feedingvegankids #midwestvegan #vegancomfortfood #vegancommunity #bestofvegan #cornfedplantbased #veganfooddelivery #vegandelivery

Double tap 💚 for meeting Vitamin A for our vegan kids During a session with a client, we talked about several ways she can improve her meals to help her toddler meet their key nutrients while following a vegan diet. One of the nutrients we particularly focused on was Vitamin A. While Vitamin A is important and can easily be met with carotenoid-rich plant foods (think bright orange colored plant foods), I've been noticing more and more that this particular nutrient lacks in a vegan child who has several food preferences. Vegan kids who tend to be 'picky eaters' often fall short in meeting this key nutrient based on meals shared by parents I work with. The good news is that with just some slight meal modifications and some strategies to help your vegan child try certain plant foods, meeting their Vitamin A requirements can easily be done. So, with just a few suggestions of what plant foods my client could add to her toddler's meals—like carrots, sweet potatoes, and cooked spinach to name a few—she had a great nutritional foundation in helping her toddler thrive on a vegan diet (and meet their Vitamin A!). If you'd like to learn more about how to support your vegan child's growth on a vegan diet, grab my FREE Essential Starter Kit ✨link in bio✨ I walk you through what key nutrients they need, what feeding practices to follow at home, and what age certain supplements should be started.

Vegan multivitamins 🌱 I get so many requests for multivitamin suggestions, so here they are, swipe for different ages. I have only included ones that contain the RNIs for vitamins D, vitamin B12, Iodine and vitamin B12, a couple are slightly short, eg the Biocare and Vegums only have 7.5mcg of vitamin D. 🌱 From 1-2 years you could also have a vegan supplement with just A, C & D and either have separate B12 and iodine or ensure a dietary supply. There are so many on the market, personally I like to cover all bases but you can have different approaches. 🌱 I also advise that children have an algae based omega 3 supplement which is discussed in a separate post. 🌱 Check out @theoriginalvegansociety Under 5s guide and @firststepsnutrition guide for more information on supplementation.

Vegan sausage ragu with pasta for all the family 🍝 We had 4 vegan sausages left in the freezer that weren’t well liked so I decided to pan fry them, chop them up and add tomatoes, veggies etc. Served with pasta and some random accidentally vegan paratha I had in the freezer. It was lush! 😋 Number 1 pic is the adults, swipe to see variations for the boys (1 more cautious than the other) and then a toddler portion, literally never know how she’ll react! 🍽 Amazingly it was a hit with everyone! 🤩 Reel with full recipe coming up when I’ve edited it 🎞

Nope!🙅‍♀️ The human body is very clever! To counteract the increased requirements for the growing baby, we absorb more calcium through the intestinal wall and lose less calcium through the kidneys. 🦴 Therefore no supplements are necessary and the aim is 700mg per day as per the normal adult requirements. I’ve included 2 slides with information from @theoriginalvegansociety which are useful for sources and absorbability.

Made these white bean waffles with strawberry chia jam the other day for Jack. The recipe was from the @vegucated Family table recipe book. Highly recommend this book the recipes are amazing and it explains the nutrients for each recipe. 🍓 sugar free Chia Jam - we used fresh strawberries that needed eating and added some @aldiuk frozen breakfast topper - allowed them to break down and mash. Add 2tbsp chia seeds and then 1tbsp lemon juice, and 1-2tbsp maple syrup. Calcium requirements during lactation are a whopping 1250mg per day. This is because the typical daily calcium losses during lactation are 280-400mg per day and up to 1000mg per day has been reported! 🤱 During pregnancy intestinal absorption of calcium increases as well as reduced renal losses. After birth these return to the non- pregnant state and therefore demineralisation of the skeleton occurs to meet demands. 🦴 It is thought this does not have adverse consequences in the long term but I always recommend aiming for 1250mg of calcium and 10mcg of vitamin D per day. 🦴 Supplements may be necessary as it is difficult to meet such high amounts l. It would take approximately 1 litre of calcium enriched alternative milk per day. 🥛 Another excellent source is calcium set tofu, 1/2 pack contains 800mg calcium. 🦴 The BDA has an excellent food fact sheet on calcium which has examples of plant based calcium sources. 🦴 If you have concerns speak to your GP, health visitor or dietitian 🤱

Loaded vegan nacho bowl...yes please! Always a favourite. If you offer me vegan nachos, it will be a yes every single time 😋 This was super easy to put together and even better to eat. The chilli was just tinned kidney beans and chopped peppers with a little chopped tomatoes and chilli mixed spices simmered for 15 minutes. The nacho cheese is made from blending softened cashew nuts and cooked carrots with almond milk, nutritional yeast and a few jalapeños for a slight kick. We also added guacamole (smashed avocado and lime juice), a tomato salsa, coriander and jalapeños. No cutlery was used in the eating of this meal. I’m now craving this again right now 😋 Anyone else?! #veganfood #veganmealideas #vegannachos #vegannachocheese #vegancheese #veganchilli #beanchilli #plantshaveprotein #eatmoreplants #plantbasedfamily #veganfamily #veganmama #veganmother #feedingvegankids #feedmevegan #nacholove

Hands up🙌🏼 for supporting texture exposure In the most recent group of the Vegan Kids Nutrition Blueprint course, a vegan mom inside our private community asked about her daughter spitting out certain foods during meal times. She was following the Baby Led Weaning approach and felt worried that her daughter may not be getting certain nutrients. That feeling of worry is something I remember so vividly with a past private client too, where she told me that her daughter didn't "like" citrus fruits, such as oranges. She felt limited in knowing what other fruits to provide to her because majority of the time she would chew and spit it out. This led her to think that her daughter must just not "like" these foods because she wasn't eating them. Her mother instinct is valid and I understand why she would think that. Some kids may generally not be please with certain tastes or textures but we won't know for certain without offering. Just because they spit it out doesn't always mean that they don't "like" that particular food. For most kids, it just means that they need more time to get familiar with the texture, smell, taste, and temperature of that food. Helping our kids learn to "like" a variety of foods is important to help establish healthy eating habits and support their growth on a vegan diet. I just added a 🔸NEW🔸 lesson all about helping expose your vegan child to a variety of foods and textures and exactly what you can do (and say!) during those times. Portion sizes It's a topic that comes up too often with vegan parents. And rightly so, you care about your kids and want more than anything for them to thrive on a vegan diet. You want to know that you're offering the appropriate amounts of food for their age. You want to feel reassured that they're getting everything they need to grow strong and healthy on a vegan diet. And more than anything, you just want to leave the worry and anxiety behind. What if I told you that there is a simpler way to feel less overwhelmed about portion sizes? A tool that requires no measuring cups and no counting required when serving your vegan kids plate. Can you picture what life (and meal planning) would be like for you? If my clients can reach that desire, I'm confident you will too. When my clients learn, implement, and continuously practice this one strategy in meal planning, they become confident planning meals at every stage of their vegan kid's growth💚 I'm sharing what that tool is in my FREE training this Thursday ✨save your seat with link in bio✨ So that with time, you can practice implementing this tool at meal times and never again question whether you provided "enough" to your kids.

Hands up🙌🏽 if you agree I remember a vegan mom sending me a message after I shared Camila's meal on stories. She seemed really curious, yet unsure, about the amount of food I had served for her. She identified it as a "small portion" and was curious if that was the actual portion to meet the nutrient needs for Camila's age. She just wanted to know if that portion size was "enough" to support her growth. And I completely understand where she was coming from because it's something that other vegan parents often wonder about too. The thing is, the meals Camila starts with are simple just that—it's the amount of food she starts with. She may eat more or less than that. And the same is true for your own infant, toddler, and/or child. Whether it's a "small" or "large" portion, these sizes are simply amounts we perceive them to be. But just because the portions our vegan kids eat are "small" or "large" doesn't necessarily mean they may not be getting "enough" or "too much". Join my FREE training this Thursday, March 18th ✨link in bio✨ where I talk about why portion sizes don't matter and what you should focus on instead. It is one meal planning strategy that you can implement right now, so that you can finally feel confident feeding your child at each stage of their growth.

3/15/2021, 3:39:31 PM

I recently had a vegan mom reached out to me, feeling desperate to know how to "get" her son to actually eat something. I could tell she was feeling quite frustrated😩 but mostly overwhelmed at not knowing what to do. When I asked how meals were going, she shared that her 19 month old son was really fussy at meal times and majority of the time just playing with his food🥦. She considered her son to be a "picky eater" simply because he just wasn't trying much of what she prepared for him. And I get that. It can feel SO frustrating to prepare a perfectly, nourishing meal only to have your vegan child play with the food and push it onto the floor. I know this scenario too well having raise my daughter👩‍👧 I also get that you would do ANYTHING to learn how to "get" your child to eat the meal and stop playing with their food. Good news for you that there is something you can do, right now. It just isn't as an easy "fix" as you may think. I encourage you to make one slight shift in how you perceive "food playing". Instead of trying to stop it, embrace it. Instead of thinking as your child as a "picky eater", know that they're exploring food. Because at the end of the day, they need us. They need us to nurture that side of them so that they can eventually eat those foods on their own time. This is a feeding strategy I teach you more about inside my Vegan Kids Nutrition Blueprint course ✨join the waitlist link in bio✨ So that you have the tools and strategies that help your vegan child thrive on a vegan diet—no matter what age they may be. Knowing how to approach meals makes you feel confident as a vegan parent in supporting your vegan child's growth.

Hands up🙌🏽 for vegan family meals I shared this meal a few weeks ago on my stories. It was one of those days where I didn't have any leftovers for lunch from the night before and I had to prepare something quick: black bean quesadillas with leftover sweet potatoes + simple green salad. Camila, Luke and I eat the same meal every time—with some modifications sometimes for Camila. It's very rare that we eat something different but it does happen once in awhile, especially when there isn't enough of a dish for everyone (typically during lunch when we eat leftovers from the night before). Part of eating the same thing as a family is so that Camila learns to eat the foods we eat. When we sit together and she sees us eating these foods, we are actually role modeling how to eat. We are giving her an opportunity to explore these foods in a safe environment (with her parents) and makes it more inviting for her to do the same. The other reason is to simplify meal planning. I choose to not make separate meals for each one of us. And by making one meal that we can all have, makes my life a whole lot easier. ⁣ If you'd like to simplify meal planning for your family, grab my Vegan Kids Cookbook ✨link in bio✨. It includes simple recipes that not only meet the nutrient needs of your vegan kids but also appropriate for the entire family. This helps you simplify meal planning so that you don't feel stressed about making something different for everyone in the family. Instead, feel more at ease and confident in feeding your vegan kids as a vegan mom.

🥦 Broccoli Fritters 🥦 My girls are very into broccoli so I thought I would make them into fritters & of course they loved it! - Recipe - 💚 3/4Cup - Chickpea flour 💚 1 1/2Cups - Broccoli after steaming and chopped up 💚 Spices like cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika 💚 1/2Cup - Water Mix water, chickpea flour & spices together then add broccoli. Pan fry small patties until golden brown. I paired it up with coconut yogurt for dipping. I liked them too but I would put a lot more spices with hot sauce if I were making them for me! 🔥 💛 🧡 💚 ❤ 💙 💜 #veganblwjourney #veganblwideas #plantpowered #plantbasedblw #veganblwinspiration #broccolifritters #plantbasedjuniors #feedingvegankids #raisingvegans #blwjourney #feedingtwins #whatifeedmyvegankid #whatmybabyeats #whatmyveganbabyeats #broccoliforbaby #broccoli

Most vegan parents will agree: it can be tricky to put together a daily menu of breakfasts, lunches and dinners that’s both nutritious and appealing to picky eaters 😕 Add to this the between-the-meal snacks, and we often feel like we’re putting together a never-ending food-themed puzzle 😞 Good news: finding perfect vegan snacks doesn’t have to be complicated. I've put together a blog post with 40 easy vegan snacks for kids (and adults!) that are both delicious and healthy 😋 Even the pickiest of eaters will find something to their taste. Tom yum... yum yum! 😁 Inspired by the gorgeous recipe by @thefoodietakesflight, and it’s hands down the best broth I’ve ever managed to make thanks to her fab notes! We packed our tangy broth with straw and chestnut mushrooms, tofu, baby corn and Chinese cabbage, bulked it up for dinner with rice noodles, and added coriander and spring onion as the final flavour hit! Fresh and warming, it was perfect food therapy for a dull wet day... and the kitchen smelt fantastic! #vegan #veganmum #veganfamily #veganfamilymeals #whatdoveganseat #plantbased #vegantomyum #vegannoodles #feedingvegankids

Double tap 💚 for feeding your child with all the confidence Fear is an interesting feeling. For many of us, it's our internal maternal alarm that tells us something is not OK. It's not something we initially feel while feeding our children but it can creep in and bring anxiety, self-doubt, and worry to the surface. I recall a few weeks ago a vegan mom messaged me that she was concerned about her toddler's overall nutrition. She was finding it difficult😩to make sure her daughter was getting all the nutrients she needed to thrive on a vegan diet. She began to worry because her daughter didn't always want to finish her meal. This in turn made her feel anxious not just at that particular meal but for the rest of the day. What started as a small moment grew until the mom was fearful😕 she was doing something wrong—or not "enough". The thing is, you're not alone! So many of you in this community have gone through the same thing, including myself. And I want to reassure you that you have the ability to overcome this fear by believing in your role as the leader during mealtimes. That's the roadmap I give you inside the Vegan Kids Nutrition Blueprint ✨enroll with link in bio✨ When you apply this step-by-step process, you'll not only overcome the fear of missing out on nutrients to support your child's growth but you'll feel confident🤩as a vegan mom—no matter how much or little your child chooses to eat at meal/snack times. Hands up 🙌🏽for feeling amazing as a vegan mom Kelly (name changed for privacy) is a vegan mom enrolled in the Vegan Kids Nutrition Blueprint. She reached out one day feeling stressed at meal times as her son had started to throw food off his plate and onto the floor. Like many of us, dinner was a meal that she was struggling with. One night, she served pizza for her family. It was a a food he was still getting familiar with but Kelly did a great job at continuing to expose him to a family meal. After modifying the pizza to make her son feel more successful at eating, he still kept throwing it. I could tell this was a stressful situation for Kelly and it was starting to feel overwhelming for her. If you can resonate with Kelly's situation, you're not alone. While there are many reasons why your vegan child may throw food, a big part of helping your child at the dinner table is ensuring the meal you offer is appropriate for them—both with the type of food and other characteristics of foods, like size. Children want to be successful at eating. They want to have ownership of their food. So, one of the things I shared with Kelly is to start with small portions. When we modify the size of the meal for our vegan child, it makes the meal more inviting. Making it more likely for your child to say "I can do this". Kelly did just that. Not only was this approach successful for her son but she also took it upon herself to keep trying other strategies. She began to learn more about the art of feeding her own son, making meals more enjoyable, and naturally letting nutrition fall into place. Kelly believed in herself. When Kelly mastered this skill of being her son's leader, she not only felt more relieved at meal times but she also became more confident as a vegan mom. And I couldn't be more proud of her because she did it! If you want to feel less stress at meal times to support your child's growth on a vegan diet, enroll in the Vegan Kids Nutrition Blueprint ✨link in bio✨ (enrollment closes on December 3rd) 💚You'll have support through a members only Facebook group where you can ask questions to your current challenges in feeding your vegan child.

Hands up🙌🏼 for pumpkin seeds It can be challenging to feed your child a vegan diet when they have food allergies—especially nut allergies. I got a message from a vegan mom who felt lost at how to meet her son's calorie needs. She mentioned her son had several food allergies, with one being to several nuts. This made meal planning challenging for her because she was aware that nut butters were a good source to help meet his calorie needs. This caused her to worry in meeting her son's nutritional and calorie needs while following a vegan diet. She didn't want to miss meeting certain key nutrients, especially ones that were provided from a variety of nuts. Reality is, being allergic to several plant foods like nuts can be challenging to ensure meals are appropriately planned; however, it's not impossible. With the appropriate knowledge on plant foods that are key to a vegan diet and proper planning of meals you CAN support your child's growth while following a vegan diet. I like to recommend pumpkin seeds because it meets several key nutrients that are important for kids who follow a vegan diet, such as calories, protein, and zinc. If you'd like to learn more about supporting your child's growth on a vegan diet, grab my FREE Essential Starter Kit ✨link in bio✨I show you what nutrients are needed, supplements, and other feeding startegies that helps you and your child.

Hands up 🙌🏽if you can relate Last week, I receive a message from a vegan mom who was very concerned over the amount her 15 month old ate. She felt worried that her son didn't eat much and that made her concerned about his overall nutrition. This is something very common I hear from vegan moms just like you. You want to know how to "get" your child to eat a certain food; a certain amount. You want to know how much your child should eat at each stage of growth. More than anything, you want to know how to stop feeling anxious at each meal and what to do in those instances. It can certainly feel concerning when our vegan child doesn't eat. Just this past weekend, Camila hardly ate much for snack, lunch, or dinner. As I was bathing her that night, my thoughts unconsciously kept asking: "Isn't she hungry? Should I have cooked something different for her to eat?" That mother instinct and insecurities always kicks in! But I just kept reminding myself to trust Camila's appetite. Worrying and feeling anxious about every amount she eats or doesn't eat is only hurting my own ability to be a more confident vegan mom. And that's something that I strive to help with every client—and you! I'm confident you can feel a sense of ease around your child's eating and you can start by grabbing my free Essential Starter Kit ✨link in bio✨. I show you my top 5 strategies for ensuring a proper growth & development so you can ultimately feel confident as a vegan mom

Which side stands out to you the most? Let me know in the comments below 👇🏾 A past client of mine felt concerned about her daughter's weight. I remember during one of our sessions she referred to her daughter as "too skinny". I wasn't sure what she meant by that and after a few questions, her perception of "too skinny" wasn't because of her daughter's growth trend but rather simply a physical observation of her daughter's body size. And that's something that I encounter with several clients and vegan moms just like you. You feel that your child needs to grow more, grow faster, or gain more weight. Now, I'm not saying that this isn't valid—medically this is sometimes to be true—but majority of the time it's simply our own perception of what our child's body weight or size "should" be. A child's body size and weight is more than their overall nutrition. Genetics play a big role in this too. While you can support your child's growth with nutrient and calorie-dense foods (like avocado, tofu, and nut/seeds butters), your child will also get to grow in the body that he/she is meant to be in. As parents, it's in our nature to want to have control over many things in our child's life but their body size shouldn't be one of those. If you'd like to learn how to support your child's weight on a vegan diet, grab my free Essential Starter Kit guide ✨link in bio✨ I walk you through the 5 strategies I teach my clients to ensure their child is meeting their nutrient needs so they ultimately feel confident feeding and supporting their child's growth.

Double tap 💚for meeting Vitamin B12 needs This week, a vegan mom reached out worried about meeting her infant's Vitamin B12 needs. She shared with me how she was sprinkling nutritional yeast on her meals to help meet this key nutrient but just wasn't sure if that was "enough" to meet daily needs. She's not the only one who has had that challenge. In fact, it was something that came up in a session with a past client. Tina was offering nutritional yeast to her 10-month old daughter at any meal she could. I remember a meal she would prepare for her daughter was making a vegan mac & 'cheese' made with carrots and potatoes. She would always add nutritional yeast to make the 'cheese' sauce. She was certain that this meal prepared with nutritional yeast was meeting her daughter's Vitamin B12 needs. Vitamin B12 is a key nutrient that is needed to support a proper growth for your vegan child but it's a very complex vitamin. And that's something that I shared with Tina because I wanted her to have the tools and knowledge to feed her daughter with confidence. When I shared with Tina that nutritional yeast wasn't a reliable source for meeting Vitamin B12, she felt discouraged. While nutritional yeast that is fortified can certainly provide Vitamin B12, it shouldn't be relied on. It can still be part of the diet but supplementing with Vitamin B12 is the most reliable way to meet your vegan child's needs. If you'd like to learn what other supplements are needed for your vegan child, grab my Essential Starter Kit guide ✨free with link in bio✨. I share at what stage of growth supplements your should begin supplementing and how they support a proper growth and development. When Tina learned how to adequately supplement her daughter, she felt much more confident in supporting her growth on a vegan diet. And I'm confident you will too!

Double tap💚 to support your child's weight and appetite When it comes to school-aged kids (4 - 8 years old), you might notice that they may be eating more than usual. You feel that they have a big appetite but just aren't sure why they're eating more these days. Feeling confused (and lost) by your child’s desire to eat more than usual, was a vegan mom's recent concern. She mentioned that her kids would ask to eat every couple of hours. She wasn't really sure why and wanted guidance on what to do to ensure she supports their growth. There are several reasons for why your school-aged child may be asking for more food. It could very well be that they are going through a growth spurt and this period of rapid growth is accompanied by hunger, as their body requires more energy to sustain that growth. Another reason could be that their meals and snacks just aren't appropriately planned. They may be lacking in calories, fat, and/or protein to help them feel satisfied and why they may ask to eat again. And the last reason that I want to share is that they may be experiencing boredom. Because they don't know what else to do, the turn into eating without paying attention to their hunger cues. All of these are normal and they are reasons where you can help your child. I just want you to be aware that it's typical for kids to eat every few hours. Something that I show you inside the Vegan Kids Nutrition Blueprint ✨enroll with link in bio✨ is how to appropriately plan meals at each stage of growth. I show you want foods to focus on depending on their age to ensure that they are meeting their nutrient needs. When you know how to create balanced meals so that your child meets their nutrient needs, you'll feel confident as a vegan mom feeding and supporting their growth. And when you do that, you'll be able to better identify why your child may be asking to eat a lot more often.

Hands up🙌🏽 if you agree I often hear from vegan moms just like you that a big challenge in choosing to raise your family on a vegan diet is dealing with the judgement from others. I know what that feels like because it's something I've dealt with too. Too often we find ourselves feeling criticized for feeding a diet to our kids that is "different" in our society. Too often we hear negative comments from family members, healthcare providers, colleagues, and friends that our choice is "unhealthy" and "too restrictive" for our growing kids. And this only leaves us questioning our own lifestyle as to whether or not we are feeding our vegan kids with everything that they need to grow properly. But before we get upset about what is being said to us, let's remember the one value that brought us to this lifestyle in the first place: compassion. By extending compassion to those who may disagree with our choice, we are standing as a leader for our vegan community. We are leading by example and showing others what an amazing, safe, and evidence-based lifestyle we are proud of to raise our children in. That is more powerful and does more good than anything we may comment back. It matters what we say but what we do to advocate for our vegan children matters more. So, if we continue to lead by example we can inspire them to join us in raising a vegan family. More than anything, we can inspire more vegan moms to come change the world and make an impact—for people, planet, and animals. If you'd like to learn how to meet the nutrient needs of your vegan child at each stage of growth, grab my Vegan Kids Cookbook ✨link in bio✨. I share simple recipes with simple ingredients so that you feel confident as a vegan mom feeding your infant, toddler, and/or child. Be proud to represent compassion and raising a healthy, vegan family.

Hands up🙌🏼 for meeting calorie needs⁣ ⁣ Making sure her toddler gains proper weight is one of the biggest challenges a vegan mom is experiencing right now. As a mom myself, I can understand her worry. ⁣ ⁣ She reached out saying that she tries to make sure her toddler eats "enough" calorically dense foods. I paused reading this because it showed her commitment to ensuring her meal planning included key nutrients to support her toddler's growth. She went on to say that her toddler's tummy gets full so quickly from the foods he loves (primarily fruits and veggies) but is still learning to like other foods that help meet his calorie needs. ⁣ ⁣ And that's typical for most vegan toddlers. Kids generally like familiar foods—especially ones that are observed eating as a family together—and so they generally gravitate toward fruits and certain veggies. While these are important for meeting certain key nutrients, many fruits and veggies are generally high in fiber. ⁣ ⁣ Now, I've talked about this topic a lot in previous posts but when foods offered that are generally higher in fiber, this adds volume to your vegan child's small tummy. This leads them to feeling full quick and may not eat "enough" to meet their calorie needs. ⁣ ⁣ I encourage you to balanced their diet so that foods lower in fiber are incorporated into their meals and snacks. Tofu is one of my favorite foods (or magical food as one of my past clients called it!). It provides key nutrients like iron, calcium, and fat but it also provides much less fiber than other legumes and veggies. ⁣ ⁣ Knowing what to offer to ensure meals support your vegan child's growth and development makes you feel confident as a vegan mom in feeding them. It makes you feel less worried and stressed. That's why I created the Vegan Kids Nutrition Guide ✨free with link in bio✨ to share some meal planning tips at each stage of growth so that you feel confident.

Hands up 🙌🏼for soy-based infant formula⁣ ⁣ Sitting on the couch of our living room one mid-morning day, I was nursing Camila and feeling like it could just very well be our last nursing session together. She was 10 months old. ⁣ ⁣ I remember visiting our lactation consultant and pediatrician for help on how to best maintain my milk supply. While I was supported, I realized our tiring yet beautiful breastfeeding journey was coming to an end. I had to decide whether to supplement her with formula or with donor milk.⁣ ⁣ I spent every waking hour researching both options. I just wanted to make the "right" choice for her. In the end, the best choice for our family was to use soy-based formula. ⁣ ⁣ The safety of soy-based foods continues to be questioned by our society. In fact, with so much misinformation out there vegan moms just like you question whether it is safe to offer soy-based formula to your infant. ⁣ ⁣ A breastfeeding vegan mom recently asked this. Specifically, she wanted to know if this was a "healthy" option for her son as breastfeeding wasn't going as planned for her and did not want to supplement with dairy-based formula. ⁣ ⁣ Yes, formula based on isolated soy protein is completely safe and supports the growth of full-term infants. It's actually been used for over 100 years and provides all the nutrient requirements to support proper growth and development for infants. Soy doesn't provide estrogen. Estrogen is hormone that is produced in our body. Soy contains phytoestrogen, a plant compound that looks similar in structure as estrogen but it is not estrogen. There's really no adverse effects in infants who consume soy-based formula. ⁣ ⁣ I want you to feel reassured that there is an option if you need to supplement your vegan infant during their first year of life. Some brands may not be vegan as the type of Vitamin D and other fats may be derived from animal sources. However, this is the ONLY option of formulas currently on the market suitable for vegan infants. ⁣ ⁣ If want to feel confident as a vegan mom feeding your infant a healthful vegan diet, grab my Vegan Kids Nutrition Guide ✨link in bio✨.

Double tap💚 if your vegan infant, toddler, or child has ever thrown food on the floor⁣ ⁣ A vegan mom recently shared with me that her son throws his food on the floor. She felt worried about his nutrition since he would only eat a little bit and then begin to throw the rest on the floor. ⁣ ⁣ I know it can feel frustrating when your vegan infant or toddler begins to throw food during a meal, especially when it is a food that is so important to support their growth. ⁣ ⁣ Camila has thrown food on the floor and it can feel upsetting at times. Instead of controlling the situation, I remind myself that the her behavior is actually a way of communicating with me. She's not dropping food on the floor because she doesn't "like" what I offer, majority of the time it's because she's just no longer hungry. ⁣ ⁣ There are several reasons why older vegan infants and toddlers throw food but one of the most common reasons is because their small tummy is satisfied. It's a sign that they've had enough to eat. It's a sign they're no longer hungry. ⁣ ⁣ And while I can understand this can be concerning, especially when they've only eaten 1 or 2 pieces of food, it's our job to honor and respect their appetite. So when Camila begins to throw food, I simply direct her to what I want her to do: keep the food on the plate, place it on a side dish, or even sometimes put it on my plate. ⁣ ⁣ If you feel concerned about meeting the nutrient needs of your vegan infant, toddler, or child, ✨grab my Vegan Kids Cookbook with link in bio✨. I share simple recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner so that you feel confident feeding your kids at each stage of growth. You'll also get a 3-day meal plan so you know exactly what to offer and ultimately feel proud as a vegan mom for raising your kids on an eating pattern that extends compassion to animals.
