Hey Mumma, I know the struggle - you don't have energy because you don’t eat proper meals during the day but to eat proper meals during the day, you need energy to actually make them?! 😫 It’s a catch 22 and it feels like you’ll never get out of this vicious cycle. Don’t give up on yourself though, I’ve got a couple of tips that might help ... - Keep breakfast SIMPLE but include protein – switch between a protein smoothie and something easy like 2x boiled eggs with a piece of fruit/ serve of raw veg (cucumber, tomato, capsicum, carrot etc.) - Use leftovers – choose dinners that have leftovers (bolognese, curries, stir-frys, frittatas, slow cooked meals, soups) and eat the leftovers for lunch the next day. - Switch breakfast & lunch - if you've got more time in the mornings, switch breakfast and lunch around – have a quick smoothie for lunch and a more substantial sandwich/ wrap or leftovers for breakfast instead. If you often use food as a way to cope, you'll know that there tends to be a lot of guilt & shame attached. Please know that using food as a way to temporarily avoid/ numb yourself to certain feelings ISN'T a bad thing. What is bad is the guilt & shame that you put yourself through because of it. Those feelings are significantly worse and are the reason you continue to do it. Using food to make yourself feel better has got you to where you are today. It helped you deal with plenty of unpleasant and uncomfortable emotions in the past and helped you put on a happy, bubbly persona as a result. This is a good thing. In fact, using food can often be one of the better coping strategies. Its cheap, its effective and rarely hurts anybody else, unlike so many other vices we have access to today. If this is you, simply acknowledge it for what it is, with zero judgement attached. Is it a harmless habit that you do every now and again (a short-term coping mechanism) or has it turned into a long-term coping mechanism (which is now stopping you from becoming the person you want to be)? A lot of women view cravings as a weakness, but often, they’re just messages from our body to maintain balance (homeostasis). There are a stack of reasons why you might crave particular foods or flavours. The one thing I encourage all of my clients to do is acknowledge cravings as they arise (rather than ignore them), then mindfully explore the potential root cause – - Is this craving attached to an emotion or physical feeling? - Is this craving for a highly palatable food that was designed by manfucturers to be craved? - Is this craving tied to a habit that you’ve created? - Is this craving steering you towards something that would support your health & wellbeing that you’re currently neglecting? Once you’ve identified the root cause, from here you can choose to dismiss or fulfill the craving from a place of empowerment, rather than feel controlled by your cravings. Most of the time cravings are caused by a lack of needs that nourish us OFF the plate. Things like dissatisfaction in your career, creatitivy, relationships, stress, social life etc. A few other causes are – - Dehydration - Yin-Yang Imabance – Eating foods that are either too ying or too yang may make you crave the opposite (eg. eating lots of sugary foods may cause a craving for meat/ protein) - Familiarity – The taste of recently eaten foods lingers in your mouth for up to 3 days so if you eat chocolate today, chances are you’ll crave it again the next few days. - Seasonal – In Summer, we often crave light, fresh foods and vice versa. - Lack of Nutrients – If you’re lacking in vitamins/ minerals, you’ll ikely crave foods to fulfill that nutrient void. - Hormonal – Need I say more?! 🩸🍫 - Self-Sabbotage – Believe it or not, sometimes major dietary changes lead to self-sabbotage to tempt you to go back to your old, comfortable ways. What does a Health & Style Coach actually do? Here is a glimpse of some of the clients I have seen over the past few months & the reason they joined our SQUAD - Client 1 – She wanted to feel better, healthier & more confident in her body. Previously, she would adopt too many tips/ tricks/ changes/ approaches and then fail at them all (or get overwhelmed with all of the info/ rules). Client 2 – This client needed to reduce her alcohol intake which was the root cause of exercise and nutrition going out the window. Client 3 – Her goal was to drop a few kilos and gain more muscle. Biggest barrier was motivation to actually do the work required to achieve this. She also needed help with her diet – clarification on if she was eating enough, too much, quality of foods etc. Client 4 - Menopause and a back injury saw this client put on weight. What once worked for her, no longer worked post-menopause. Client 5 – This client wanted wardrobe tips & advice to look more polished and reduce time & money wasted on clothes and accessories. Client 6 - A workaholic, yo-yo dieter, who felt burnt out and would binge eat as a result. She needed a simple, fuss-free routine that she could stick to. Client 7 – Both chronic stress & chronic back pain were becoming a huge concern for this client. She wanted to be flexible, gain confidence and work out what to do with her career. Client 8 – Guidance on how to change her diet to improve health + motivation and discipline to maintain exercise which was the first thing to go when her week got busy.
