Very often the best squat isn’t a bilateral squat, no matter how we perform it. That is because in life and sport our body moves with direction and this can change what the demands of the lower body are and how we have to develop them in the gym. As a 2013 paper describes, “Many training approaches focus almost exclusively on the front to back motions that occur in what is called the sagittal plane. This plane is important for posture, but stability and power involve stopping and starting actions that often occur in the side-to-side, or frontal plane. The lateral squat provides a foundation for these side-to-side motions to bridge the gap to sport specific skills.” The lateral plane is not only necessary for strong athletic based movements, but keeping the knees and low back resilient in anyone. When we walk or perform most movements in life, stabilizing and moving in the frontal plane is actually a very large demand on our body. If we have an inability to do so with proper strength, stability, and mobility, we are at more risk of having issues specifically of the knees and low back. A 2020 paper compared a lateral sliding squat to a bilateral squatting movement. When looking at the muscle activity of that same leg under those two conditions, it was found, “EMG activity of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, biceps femoris and rectus femoris was significantly greater with both single limb slide exercises as compared to both squat exercises.” That is why I wanted to show some ways we progress the lateral slide squat which is essential for people to really feel proficient in before doing other movements like lateral lunges. Using our lateral press out squat with @perform_better XL mini band with @valslide teaches the importance of develop greater core stability (proximal stability) so we can get greater range of motion and strength in the lower body. The mini band helps with reinforcing the need to keep both feet active the entire movement. 

The use of a jam ball and our new mobility balls are progressive ways to build more reflexive stability and strength in the lateral squat that will challenge the movement of the power body in all new ways.

Lunges are a much more powerful exercise than most people realize. The benefits of the lunge go much further than many other lower body movements. Like what? In a study, “Improved Muscle Activation In Performing A Body Weight Lunge Compared To The Traditional Back Squat”, researchers found… “with the similarities in sport motion to that of the lunge, and equal if not greater activation of the lower extremity, the lunge is an ideal activity to train athletes.” Another study, “Lunges activate the gluteus maximus muscles more than back squats when both exercises are standardized” found.. “Lunges were more effective in recruiting the gluteal maximus when compared to back squats.” Lateral strength is also an often overlooked aspect of the benefits that lunges provides. A study in the British Journal Of Sports Medicine explains, “The findings suggest that in healthy subjects hip muscle strength is not correlated to the amount of valgus/varus movement of the knee during a forward lunge. This suggests that other factors (eg, proprioception, core hip stability) might be more important in controlling knee movement.” So, just working the hips muscles isn’t as good as training the lunge. What really challenges people is to find strategies they can use in order to teach the qualities that make up lunges. Many people lack the strength, stability, and mobility, so drills like we show from our Myofascial Integrated Movement system to higher level DVRT Ultimate Sandbag drills help teach how to more successful lunges. Using the @perform_better medicine ball and practice diagonal walking teaches how to stabilize on one leg while slowly learning to shift weight and stabilize through the core. There is an emphasis on deceleration and hip mobility as well. A split stance press with super bands helps people learn how to stabilize in the lunge position without having to descend up and down. We can go as low or high in the stance and learn how to use the feet and brace the core.
