With a focus on the production of portraiture, I discovered an intriguing group of Buddhist divine monk imagery dated to the eighth and twelfth centuries. The Lingyin Temple is a Buddhist temple of the Chan sect located northwest of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. It is one of the largest and wealthiest Buddhist temples in China, and contains numerous pagodas and grottoes. Founded in 328 CE, the temple reached its peak under the Wuyue Kingdom (907–978) and boasted nine multistory buildings inhabited by more than 3,000 monks. It has been destroyed numerous times, as recently as August 1966 by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution, but the locals stood up to them. leading to a standoff until Premier Zhou Enlai (1898-1976) closed it for its protection. The Feilai Feng limestone grottos are at the front of the temple and contain 330 carvings, such as this Laughing Buddha or Budai, a semi-historical 10th-century Chinese monk who is venerated as Maitreya Buddha in Chan Buddhism. His jolly nature, humorous personality, and eccentric lifestyle distinguish him from most Buddhist masters or figures. He is almost always shown smiling or laughing as a representation of both contentment and abundance.

"There were many traditions to follow while visiting Feilai Feng scenic park for those searching for guidance, hope and a bit of luck, myself included. A statue of the Buddha of Fortune held a pearl, and it was believed that if you rubbed his foot, he would grant your wish. I closed my eyes, whispered my prayer, and rubbed that Buddha's foot until it shone, in hopes that I would be granted a child. I was hoping the Buddha of Fortune, in partnership with the Laughing Buddha and the Goddess of Mercy, would together light a symbolic fire under fate's butt. I was completely enchanted and deeply affected by Feilai Feng park. The way in which the statues and dedications blended into the limestone peak's rocky surface and hid within its caves felt completely holistic, as if the religious images were part of nature and wondrously belonged there." "We walked along a rather precarious and slippery path to view the many rock reliefs that dot the face of Flying Peak. A happy Buddha sat within a small round cave, while a tall, thin statue of Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) was carved into the rock directly above. A long, narrow carving along the base of the peak depicted a religious pilgrimage on horseback, while a traditional carving of Sakayamuni sitting on top of a lotus bud was etched into the rock face directly above. A small bronze pagoda sat atop a cave filled with a statue of Guanyin with one palm facing downward, while next to it a Buddha wearing a flower crown was missing one hand. Of all the incredible carvings, my personal favorite was the enormous statue of a Buddha riding atop an elephant, where each of the elephant's feet rested upon lotus buds."
