We've enlisted the help of four remarkable cats are not only adorable, but also perfectly adoptable! 😻 We want to raise awareness about FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and break down any misconceptions. For starters, FIV is NOT transmissible to people or other types of animals. Cats diagnosed with FIV can live long and happy lives, with most illness not coming from the virus itself but secondary infections or problems with the immune system. Studies done in 2010 and 2022 found that an FIV diagnosis doesn't necessarily lead to a decreased lifespan. While there is currently no FDA-approved cure to FIV, feeding a healthy diet, eliminating stressors, and managing secondary infections are key to helping an FIV+ cat live their best life. FIV is spread primarily through deep bites, meaning that in households with stable social structures there is little risk of the virus spreading to non-FIV cats. Super slow introductions will be key for any adopters that already have non-FIV cats. On March 17, 2014 (10 years ago) my Meowmy began fostering her first FIV+ cat. "Hamster" is the one who started her love of FIV+ cats, and she has fostered and adopted out many in these over the 10 years. Of course, she didn't adopt me out to another home because we are a PURRFECT fit. ❤️ Hamster was fostered 7 months and this is a photo of him with the person who rescued him from a feral colony - taken the week he was adopted. He had had a very rough life, but the years after rescue and mending were filled only with love. Hamster was estimated to be about 18 years old when he crossed Rainbow Bridge.🌈 A part of him will live on through the things Meowmy learned about FIV and her passion for the cats who deserve loving human guardians. TW: shots administered 💉 LEAR: - got his yearly vaccines - got his nails clipped (he has to be taco’d) - officially lost 4 pounds since being adopted! this is great, as the vet says he has now reached a healthy weight - got another shot for his allergies; this prevents him from sneezing too much and itching himself to the point of scabbing. when he was first adopted, he had tons of scabs due to his allergies! 🤧 - got his yearly ear cleaning, which he needs since his body overproduces earwax - got tested for FIV in case Momma gave it to him at any point this year (the test came back negative 🥳) MOMMA: - got her yearly vaccines - got a refill of the sedative she takes in preparation of vet visits due to anxiety 💊 - got her nails clipped (she only allows this when she is sedated) - officially at a healthy weight! the vet did not weigh her since she does not like being picked up, but they observed that she has definitely lost weight since being adopted and put on a diet. - got her blood drawn due to having several seizures (one of which was initially misdiagnosed as a stroke). her bloodwork came back normal several days later, and she was prescribed a medication that will immediately stop an active seizure upon being administered. she also recently had a CT scan done at an animal hospital, and that came back normal too. the vets believe she may have epilepsy. MILLI - got her yearly vaccines - officially at a healthy weight! she has gained several pounds since being rescued. she is still on the smaller side for a cat, weighing around 8.5 pounds, but the vet says she is just a small cat.
This pretty girl has her full mouth teeth extraction tomorrow and her human is a mess. Since losing Juniper, I’m wrecked when I have an animal go under anesthesia. Baby is my inherited kitty from my grandpa who I later learned has FIV. A complication of FIV is stomatitis. She has very few teeth left and I don’t want to keep putting her through surgeries so I’ve opted to do a full mouth extraction. He was in a rough shape, couldn’t eat due to major inflammation of the oral mucosa around his teeth, but I wanted to try and give him more time. He was only 2 1/2 years at that point. Now, little over a year later, he has barely any teeth left and is losing more today. But he is thriving! He became more relaxed, more open and sociable, now that the pain lessened. Is it optimal? No. Is it the best palliative care I can give him? I believe so. FIV is not an immediate death sentence. I am aware that he is not gonna live as long as other cats, but I am determined to make him feel as good as can do for the time he does have. After spending ten months at Second Chance, office helper Frankie was adopted yesterday! If you visited us within the last year, you've likely met our friendly, talkative, catnip-loving Siamese boy. Frankie was a senior, tested positive for FIV, and (with the exception of our other office cat Molly Roger) hated other cats. He will be missed, but we know that he'll be much happier in a home of his own that he won't have to share with other cats. Pausing my fundraising efforts to acknowledge another milestone. ❤️ 5 years ago tonight, I brought Harry to the vet for a cough. Sometimes FIV+ kitties need a little extra help, so I'm very on top of his norms & specifically booked the appointment saying "it's probably nothing but I'd feel better having him checked out." That's what moms do. 5 years ago tonight after our appointment, I did not know what kind of journey was starting, but Harry was very sick. For weeks, it appeared that he had an aggressive cancerous mass in his lungs and that our time was very limited. But it wasn't cancer. It was a miracle. ✨ He had bacterial pneumonia treatable with amoxicillin. A rare type of colonizing bacteria ( #neisseria sp) came together in his lungs mimicking a giant tumor. We did all the diagnostics - from X-rays, blood work, fecal tests to rule out lungworms, an ultrasound, a fine needle aspirate, to discussions about chemotherapy, a CT scan, a thoracotomy, a tissue biopsy and finally a bacterial culture. Everything played a role in our journey, but man, that culture...THAT contained the hope we were looking for. FIV is likely what allowed this infection to occur (possible aspiration during a necessary dental procedure) but it's also what made it entirely possible for something that looked and acted like cancer to NOT be cancer. It makes me sad that FIV is still causing kitties to be euthanized around the country and world when it doesn't need to be. I have been fortunate to have support where FIV is concerned every step of the way, but I want the world to know that FIV kitties have so much love to give, they just need advocacy, hope, open minds, and good medicine. And they need love. I'm grateful Harry's in my life every day because we faced some seriously dark storms. 🖤 FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME NEEDED 🖤 Meet Russ, he's been rescued from a big colony of cats and is one of the lucky ones to test positive for FIV only which means he still has a chance for a long and happy life. FIV (Feline immunodeficiency virus) is a viral infection that affects cats. It causes affected animals to have a weaker immune system in comparison with non-FIV positive cats. FIV isn't easily transmitted between cats (only through deep bites and not via sharing food and other normal interaction). Research shows that FIV cats may have a similar life expectancy to uninfected cats. We really need to find an experienced foster for Russ or even better his forever home! He is a gorgeous boy who really enjoys pets but he is frightened and needs time to adapt to indoor living. He needs someone that will be patient with him to get the hang of a littertray and all the scary house noises which he isn't used to. This boy lived in a colony so we think having kitty company would really help him but he can be the only cat in the house if it's a right fit. We think he is approximately 3 years old. I haven't been able to talk about it since it happened in December but I feel I can finally find a few words. My sweet boy Avellino passed away from kidney failure and FIV complications on December 5, 2023. Tomorrow is the anniversary of his official Gotcha Day 🧡 No one wanted to adopt him from the shelter because he was FIV positive. I fell in love with him from the first meeting when he boldly kissed my nose! I had seen every cat in the shelter and his area was the last one. He came down from his enclosure to greet me and decided that he was adopting me haha! I didn't have any idea what to expect with his diagnosis but he lived for many years without any symptoms at all. His last days were happy ones playing on his new living room rug, getting treats, watching holiday movies, and snuggling. I want to encourage others to be open to FIV cats when choosing a cat to adopt. We had the best years together and I couldn't be more grateful to have had the privilege of being Avellino's human! He was the sweetest most loving cat and adored by so many!
