We have cut off all intakes and acceptance of new colonies while we work on a big project, yet we cannot allow 4 new adults to breed unchecked in a managed colony. I’m Dante and despite my super cute, friendly appearance, I do have some things that staff will need to talk with you about if you are considering adopting me. I should go to an adult home only. I am not a first-time dog. I will need to go to a home that is semi quiet, with not a lot of people living there. I will need to be adopted to someone who has experience with resource guarding and can take the time to train me properly, with patience and love, but not let me get away with being a brat when I guard my bed and toys. I have bitten someone in the past for messing with my bed and putting me back in my crate/kennel and I want to be a better dog, but I need the right person to help me do it. A forever commitment, even if I slip up now and then. Now that I got all of that off my fuzzy chest, you should know that when I trust you, I am the sweetest boy ever! I love to cuddle and give kisses and I really love long walks and greeting people who we meet along the way. I am still learning the potty-training thing and may have a few accidents inside, but if you put me on a schedule, I’m smart enough to learn it. Say hello to mother/daughter duo Sasha (brunette, younger) and Mila (blonde, older). These gorgeous Shepherds are a ton of fun and enthusiasm. They really enjoy playing together but are very excited for the humans to join in the game too. Especially if they are willing to throw bouncy toys which are bestest. They are smart and food motivated so training will be easy, but it’s very necessary since it seems no one has taken the time to do that with them yet. Pepper 🐾 Pepper is een gezellige jonge poes, geboren rond 8 september 2023. Pepper is zoals een jonge poes hoort te zijn: vrolijk, ondernemend, nieuwsgierig en een tikkeltje ondeugend. Bij de eerste kennismaking kan zij even afwachtend zijn, maar al snel is Pepper erg nieuwsgierig en wil alles en iedereen leren kennen. Pepper is een vrolijke jongedame met energie en een beetje pit. Ted🐾 Ted is een leuke zwarte kater, geboren rond 9 april 2020. Als ongecastreerde vondeling is hij bij ons binnengebracht. Natuurlijk is Ted inmiddels gecastreerd en hij is nu helemaal klaar om het asiel te verruilen voor een leuke nieuwe baas! Ted is een leuke robuuste kater. Hij is aanhankelijk en wij verwachten dat hij ook met oudere (12+) kinderen kan samenwonen die weten hoe zij met een kat om moeten gaan. Ted geeft duidelijk zijn grenzen aan, met kammen ook. Hij vindt heerlijk tot een bepaald moment en dan is het klaar. Daarom is samenwonen met jongere kinderen minder geschikt. Ted is recent gecastreerd is, desondanks gaat hij goed om met een andere poes waar hij het verblijf mee deelt. Astrid is a giant galumping goofus. This XL lady (140lbs!!!) really has no concept of how big she is. She’ll bounce and play just like a little dog- just for a fraction of the time. She does love play time, and scratches, and getting brushed when she needs help with seasonal shedding. It’s a LOT of fur, make no mistake. Her zest for life and all things fun is somewhat irresistible. Because of her size and her puppy like playful nature she’s not a dog that is easy to fit into the average home. She needs space, humans who are strong and patient, a section of a room that can be just hers because that’s how much space she takes up, regular exercise and confident training techniques. Astrid is looking for someone with large or extra large dog breed experience. Anatolian Shepherds are not recommended for apartment life. They are relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large fenced yard. Her future owner will have to continue working with her on socialization with other people and dogs to make sure she is an upstanding citizen for her size and breed. Astrid must be the only pet in her new home. Because of this somewhat specific needs list- Astrid has been at the shelter a REALLY LONG time. Way too long. We hope that 2024 is her year where she starts it in the shelter and ends it in her forever home- well established and deeply loved. The best way to make that happen is for everyone to network her so she gets seen by everyone who may be her perfect fit. The League has the benefit of being a "limited-admission" shelter - meaning, we aren't a county shelter that is required or expected to take in animals if we're not able. We can comfortably control our shelter population, and only take in as many animals as we have space and resources for (well, plus a couple just beyond that number ;) ) Boone County Animal Care and Control is an "open-admission" shelter serving Boone County, KY. They are legally required to take in stray dogs, animals from cruelty & neglect cases, and any other animals in peril. They have to do that, whether they have any room for those animals or not - that's what being an "open-admission" or "county" shelter means. Which, this week, meant taking in more than 100 cats, all at once, by court mandate. We couldn't help a lot, but we could help a little - so 28 cats came our way on Tuesday, and we're hoping to squish in another 20 over the coming days. :) But the BEST part: THEY SENT US COOKIES! We're choked up. The crew at Boone County are working their tails off to try to get these cats medically sound and find spots for them to go, and they still found time to send us cookies 🥹🥰 It takes a village, people. INTRODUCING: KIMO 🤍 Our newest #vintagedog available for adoption is Kimo, a blind 8 year old Border Collie mix from San Francisco Animal Care & Control. @sfanimalcareandcontrol Sadly, he was surrendered because his human had to leave the country and could not take him. Kimo’s blindness that was caused by SARDS (Sudden Acquired Degeneration Syndrome) came on a few years ago. He has been at SF-ACC for about 2 weeks and was very stressed in the hectic, noisy shelter environment. He needed an exit plan, and we were super happy to assist. Last week, Lily’s staff member, Sam, assessed Kimo at the shelter, and it went great. He’s a sweet, attentive pup who functions very well despite his blindness. Hi everyone! It’s me, Ricky, with the awesome hair! The vet says I am a Pyrenees mix-mix…all I know is I am a good looking, well behaved, happy go lucky, gentleman. I am still under a year old they believe…lower shedding, shockingly, considering this awesome mane! I am currently just under 40lbs. I am predominantly indoor, but do love my outdoor time too! My favorite thing in this life, besides being loved on, is water. I love to play in water, drink from the hose, and lay in my little pool. I do dry off fairly quick, which is a great extra trait I have. I prefer to lay on floors where it’s cooler, rather than furniture, although I will join you there sometimes for extra hugs and kisses. I have been fostering with 4 girl hounds. They have become my best friends, and we play great together. I am such a sweet soul and love to just hang around with my humans and fur friends. I ride great in cars and you don’t even know I am in there! I also do great on a leash. I have a very manly bark, but that’s just my Pyrenees side protecting, but zero attitude with it…I am all bark as they say, and only when needed. Beau update! This sweet boy’s first visit to the vet resulted in four pulled teeth 🦷 his already fluffy cheeks were full chipmunk. Once his mouth was mostly healed he was ready for new surroundings and he moved into the cat room in the main house. His progress has been slow but thankfully steady. But… Today has been a huge day in terms of milestones! Today he approached me for affection. He’s always enjoyed getting pet but would never come to me or seek it. Today he truly explored outside of the cat room and said hi to Blade multiple times. Blade was hissy but they were fine. He sniffed around the living room and when eventually Blade made his karate sound I let Beau know it was time to go back to his room…and he walked back with me rubbing along my legs the entire way 🥰 To see Beau trust me like this has been so rewarding, when he first came inside he would get scared if I came into the room and he was anywhere other than the highest place available, now he follows me around and feels confident when I approach him anywhere. It’s been fulfilling to see him overcome a lot of challenges, moving into a completely new environment after being outside his whole life, even though he has a ways to go, I’m so happy with the progress he’s made. Nacho started out running wild on an Indian reservation before landing with Best Friends in Salt Lake, then onto to SoHo where we were destined to meet! Thanks to the many BFA volunteers that worked so hard on this event and everyday at shelters! Bella has come along nicely since her arrival. She is a House Hippo for sure! She loves to wear comfy PJ's and cuddle up with you on the couch. She is a nervous girl at first around new people, so she will need someone who is willing to socialize her with strangers and help her to feel secure about outings. With some time and patience she has come around to us and is easily encouraged with treats. Don't let her demeanor in the kennel sway you from considering her for adoption: she is VERY affectionate and will even do a little dance when getting pets. Bella loves to rub up against you when she wants cuddles and has some interest in soft squeaky toys but she is more interested in getting attention. We think she would do best in an adult only home or with calm and quiet teens. Loud noises and fast movements startle her. No cats please. We have added her to our Dogs Playing for Life Playgroup and have decided that she is too afraid of other dogs and would do best as the only pet in the household. She may be able to go on doggy playdates however her adopters will need to use their discretion and do a very slow introduction and always supervise--she tends to prefer males. We think Bella should do fine in an apartment as long as she gets plenty of daily exercise. She will need a little potty and obedience training. Moe has become a lot braver than when he first arrived to APS, courageous and gentle, we know he’s looking for a soft place to land. Moe is a 2 year old cocker spaniel mix who is weighing in at a whopping 24.4 pounds. He is currently heartworm positive, but at no cost to you, APS is able to provide treatment through a foster to adopt period. After treatment is over, he’s all yours!
