Happy May Day 🌸🌞🏋️♀️ The sun is shining and today actually feels like peak spring which means the irises will be blooming here soon! This is the one and only time I’ve made a bearded iris out of paper. Usually I make them with air dry clay, but for this custom made flower made for Ardea, my reference images were irises that grew in her grandmother’s garden — the ones that have smoother and thinner petals, with not as much buckling as other types do. I don’t know if that variety has a specific name, any gardeners help me out? I did my absolute best to recreate them as closely as I could, and that meant using paper! We're going old-fashioned with a still photo post today.😏 My Grandma, for whom our farm is named, gave me these iris rhizomes years ago. She loved irises and always had a couple in vases around her home when they were in bloom, and she especially loved this peachy-pink one. I can still hear her voice describing it to me when she gave me the rhizomes. 🥹 Goodness, I miss her. Anyway, I followed all the rules of cultivating irises-- I didn't plant them too deep, I gave them plenty of sun and water, everything-- but they never bloomed. Not once. When we sold our house 2 years ago, I brought the irises with us and just crowded them into pots. I figured they'd be far too crowded to bloom, but I hoped that they would at least stay alive until we had a place to plant them. And now we have a place to plant them! And look! I know I gush about my husband and children a lot, but they truly deserve it. For example, while I was at a bridal show today, Kyle and all 4 kids were at the farm burning brush, planting snapdragons, and putting up netting to support the plants as they grow and to protect them from deer and bunnies. Deer/Bunny resistant DOES NOT equal deer/bunny proof, so we're taking steps to make sure our plants aren't obliterated. I can't wait until these beauties are blooming!! Flower Family Series Launches Tomorrow am 9AM! This series was inspired by an experimental studio day. I’ve always enjoyed photographing flowers, getting close to examine their most intricate details. It fascinates me. With this series, I took a different approach and saw the flowers as family representations. I’ll share in my stories the first bunch of flowers I photographed. It started with one flower. As I photographed that one flower, I saw myself, single individual. Then I added two more and it completed my little family at the time with Josiah and Stella. I photographed a few variations and let it sit for a while. I ended up showing my family a few and my sister-in-law loved the concept. A few weeks later she messaged me and said if I did do another series like that she would be interested in one that represents her children. So I went to the store later that week and picked up some flowers and checked colors with her to experiment with.
