Three hundred years ago in Ireland, a blind harpist roamed the land. His name was Turlough O'Carolan. Born in 1670 into a blacksmith's family, Mrs. McDermott Roe, his father's employer, provided him with an education, recognizing his poetic talent. At the age of 18, Turlough fell ill with smallpox and lost his sight. Mrs. McDermott sent him to apprentice with a skilled harpist. After his training, he embarked on a journey across Ireland, composing songs for those who helped him. One of his first songs was dedicated to a girl named Brigit Cruise, the daughter of a teacher at the school for the blind. When Turlough turned 50, he married Mary Maguire, and they had seven children. He composed not only songs but also music for the harp. His melodies bear the influence of the baroque style and the Gaelic harp. Turlough O'Carolan usually composed the melody first, adding lyrics later. His contemporaries held him in such high regard that they postponed important events until his arrival. His works have been preserved in the repertoire of subsequent musicians and were published through the efforts of Edward Bunting and his assistants. A complete edition of his melodies was released in 1958. Today his name is immortalized on the streets of Dublin and Belfast, as well as on a crater on Mercury. Isn't the coloring on this 1928 Irish 1 Pingin (Penny) lovely? The obverse has the Gaelic/Celtic harp with the date split between both sides and in Irish it says "Irish Free State." (The Irish Free State existed from 1922-1937 when it changed its name to the Republic of Ireland.) The reverse has a hen with her chicks with the denomination above and below. Made of bronze, they were made at the British Royal Mint (@royalmintuk) in 1928, 1931, 1933, 1935, and 1937. 9 million were minted in 1928, along with 6,001 proofs. Turlough O'Carolan, Turlough Carolan or Turlough Ó Carolan (Irish: Toirdhealbhach Ó Cearbhalláin) (1670 – 25 March 1738) was a blind Celtic harper, composer and singer in Ireland whose great fame is due to his gift for melodic composition. Although not a composer in the classical sense, Carolan is considered by many to be Ireland's national composer. Harpers in the old Irish tradition were still living as late as 1792, and ten, including Arthur O'Neill, Patrick Quin and Donnchadh Ó Hámsaigh, attended the Belfast Harp Festival. Ó Hámsaigh did play some of Carolan's music but disliked it for being too modern. Some of Carolan's own compositions show influences of the style of continental classical music, whereas others such as Carolan's Farewell to Music reflect a much older style of "Gaelic Harping". This ring was handmade from a silver Irish Half Crown from 1940. The outside shows parts of a Cláirseach (Gaelic harp) which is Ireland's national symbol. The inside shows an Irish Hunter horse and the text: leat coróin (meaning Half Crown) and 2s6d (meaning 2 shillings 6 pence). Managed to get the post shaped and clean. Started working the taper on the spine too. It'll go from 4cm at the post to 2cm at the shoulder, will be slightly curved on the front with the strings will coming through it.
