Can’t seem to recall what you have already revised? ❓ Do you use flashcards AND are you using them in the most effective way? 🗒️ A flashcard is a piece of paper or card, A7 or A6 size (about 3x5 inches or 5 x 7 inches) on which you write a question on one side and the answer on the other side. Flashcards can be created in different ways: ✔️ A question on one side and the answer on the second. ✔️ ️ Keywords or terms on one side and the definition on the other. ✔️️ Colour coded e.g. the causes of events in red, the course of the events (what happened) in blue and the consequences in green. ✔️ Different coloured flash cards for different topics. E.g. yellow flashcards for Weimar and Nazi Germany, green flashcards for the Cold War. Arguments for or against a particular point of view. Flashcards can be used in different ways: ❓ Quizzing on a regular basis to test your knowledge. There are Youtube videos that explain the most effective ways to use flashcards. 🕜 Creating a timeline of the key events of a topic. Separate all of the ‘When did X happen?’ flashcards from your pack. From memory, put the events into the correct chronological order. The questions will be face up. Then turn over the cards to check the dates to see if the events are in the correct date order. ⁉️ Did you know that under the terms of the Young Plan, 1929, Germany was given a total of 59 years to pay the reparations bill? 🇺🇸 The American Banker, Owen Young, negotiated with Germany to ease the burden of reparations. Originally set at £6.6 billion in 1921, the Young Plan 🔽 Reduced the total bill to 2.2 billion ⌛ Gave Germany 59 years to pay. Right-wing political parties in Germany were horrified, Hitler said it was’ passing on the penalty’ to the next generation - they even pushed for a referendum to undermine the Plan. Capture the Castle! Today GCSE History students visited @englishheritage Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire to support their learning for the GCSE topic ‘History Around Us’. The trip was to see how the site had evolved over time. The castle has 900 years of history to explore growing from a medieval fortress to an Elizabethan pleasure palace. Thank you to our tour guide for giving us such a thorough insight into the lives of the people who have lived and worked in the castle throughout its history. This week I’ve been tutoring a lot on Russian history. GCSE and IGCSE, A level, even KS3.🇷🇺 There is something about Russian history which students find difficult. Perhaps it is the ideological differences between Stalin’s Russia and our own world.🧠 One aspect of life where there isn’t much difference, though, is education.📚 In the 1930s, Stalin reversed the freeing educational reforms of the Communist Party in favour of discipline, rigour and, yes, rote learning.👨‍🏫 Sound familiar?🤔 Following the reforms, students would all sit in silent rows facing the teacher.🤐🤐🤐🤐 A bit like they did after 2016, when the current, content-heavy GCSEs were introduced. All the tables became rows overnight!😓 I wonder which way the next GCSE reforms will go. I’m a business owner now, so I’ve got to have a business plan.📈 I opened the door to Dr Humanities exactly three months ago with just three students enrolled. Now I’m full and then some, with ample 1:1 and three growing groups!😀 But there is still something missing, and I’ve not been able to put my finger on it.🤔 Until now.💡 The missing element is … chihuahuas!🐶 Three subjects, lots of specs, plenty of students – but zero chihuahuas!🤷‍♂️ This profound deficiency in chihuahuaage must be remedied!🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶 It might be coincidence, but this could be to do with my family’s visit to @the_chihuahua_lounge this weekend. Coffee, cake and chihuahuas; the only thing missing was a nap!🛌 Seriously, though. A timely reminder of why I’ve left the classroom and launched my own business.🤔 The aim was never to fill every hour with work – I already had that. The aim was to educate young people in a better way than before while optimising my own life.💻 In this frenetic exam season, the latter element has suffered somewhat. Back to 100mph. So hard to get out of teacher mode.👨‍🏫 I’m glad to have learned this lesson early, though.👍 While I don’t have any chihuahuas, I do have three cats and dog! ⁉️ Did you know that during the crisis over Berlin (1958-62), Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, walked out of the Paris summit? 💬 Khrushchev had issued an ultimatum to the Western Allies in November 1958. He demanded that they leave West Berlin, Berlin should be demilitarised and become a free city. 🚫 The Western Allies refused! 🤝 In an effort to ease tensions, the USA and Soviet Union met in a series of summits - Geneva in May 1959, Camp David in September 1959 and Paris in May 1960. 🕵️ However, before the Paris summit took place, the Soviet Union shot down an American U2 spy plane and captured the pilot, Gary powers. 🚶 When President Eisenhower refused to apologise, Khrushchev walked out! We recently spoke to John McDonnell, a history teacher at Chase High School in Southend-on-Sea who has found Tassomai really helps embed knowledge for students that he has limited time with. "Tassomai is something that I can just pull up on the screen and see what the students are doing and where needs more time spent, as a class and an individual. The ability to be able to mix and match different topics at different times is also an important one. ⁉️ Did you know that under the new Forest Laws, William I created new ‘forest’ areas which took land away from other landholders? 🌲 Large areas of land were made into royal forests for hunting. 😲 This included the creation of the New Forest in southern England, which resulted in about 40 villages being evicted! 🏹 The land didn’t have to be covered in trees; the land was just reserved for William I to use for hunting. New crimes were created to protect these new hunting grounds. It was illegal to: 🪵 Take wood for firewood 🏹 Carry any hunting weapons in the forests 🦌 Hunt deer or wild pigs 🤯 The punishments were harsh -if caught people could be blinded, castrated or even executed! 🎒At this time of the year, a series of educational trips are organized for senior students. Currently, our Y11 history students are enjoying a three-day excursion to Berlin. Their tour began yesterday with a visit to the Jewish Quarter and the iconic Brandenburg Gate. They also paid a solemn visit to the Holocaust Memorial to honour the lives lost. The day concluded with a stop at the Reichstag. Today, their itinerary includes a visit to Sachsenhausen, a concentration camp, the Olympic Stadium built for the 1936 Olympics, and the Berlin Wall Memorial. ⁉️ Did you know the ‘Great Stink’ of 1858 encouraged Parliament to build the Victorian sewer system in London? ☀️ The incredibly hot summer of 1858 meant that the rivers in London began to dry up. This exposed all of the human and animal excrement 💩 on the riverbanks and created the most awful smell 👃 😝 It was so terrible that MPs discussed moving out of the Houses of Parliament! But it also made them pass legislation to provide £3 million to build public sewers. 🏗️ Joseph Bazalgette was responsible for the building project and a grand total of 82 miles of underground sewers and 1,100 miles of street sewers!
