Finished! 😁😮💨 “Scourge of the Steppe” 1/35th Scale This diorama depicts Soviet Cossack Cavalry raiding a German Heer Artillery unit in transport on the open steppe land of the Eastern Front. The Cossacks fighting for the Red Army won many valorous unit awards and inflicted heavy damage on German supply trains during the war, despite facing a modern mechanized army with horses and tactics from a century before. For this diorama, I had two goals. I wanted to create something reminiscent of old Wild West paintings, like with a stage coach being chased down by Indians. Second, I wanted to put my figure painting skills to the test, and hopefully advance those a little. I really wanted to include a broken wagon wheel by the roadside, to pay homage to my inspiration, but I just couldn’t make it work. Other than that, I feel that I achieved my goals and learned a few new tricks. I love the final result, and hope you enjoy it too! Original WW2 German General Assault Badge The German General Assault Badge (Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen) was a military decoration awarded during World War II to personnel of the German Army, Waffen-SS and Ordnungspolizei (order police) who supported an infantry attack but were not part of specific infantry units and therefore did not qualify for the Infantry Assault Badge. It was instituted by General Walther von Brauchitsch on 1 June 1940. The decoration, designed by the Berlin-based firm of Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus, was an oval disk that measured 5.3 cm (2 in) by 4.2 cm (2 in) by .6 cm (0 in) wide. From 22 June 1943, the medal was adapted with a small plate at the base with either 25, 50, 75 or 100 to recognise those soldiers that had taken part in numerous attacks. The medal was originally designed for presentation to combat engineers, as well as members of the artillery, anti-aircraft and anti-tank who supported infantry units in combat. It could also be awarded to medical personnel attending to battlefield casualties in "close combat conditions". Prior to the introduction of the Tank Destruction Badge, the General Assault Badge could be conferred for the single-handed destruction of tanks or armoured vehicles. Other determining factors for award: • Ineligibility for the Infantry Assault Badge • Participation in three infantry or armoured attacks on three different days; or • Participation in three infantry or armoured indirect assaults on three different days. Its manufacturing style is attributed to Biedermann & Co.Oberkassel of Bonn, Germany. Its details are still sharp and this is what I love about collecting originals. Pictured against a reproduction JFS piece (22 grams) for comparison. Also shown is my reproduction General Assault Badge (75 engagements) for your viewing pleasure. It would have had such splendid colours when newly made.
