Fires and explosions can be seen in one solid mass along the waterfront." An amazing photo taken from the bombay doors of a bomber over Toulon, France. According to some preliminary research, this was likely taken from a B-17 of the Fifthteenth Air Force of the USAAF. Mission logs list Toulon as a target for a mission on November 24, 1943. The photo is dated December 1943, and the print is listed as received in May 1944. It is a reminder that a photo date isn't always the date of when it was taken. ON THIS DAY: Battle of Lyme Bay - Disaster at Slapton Sands April 28, 1944. Tragedy struck during Exercise Tiger, one of the large-scale, thought to be top secret, Allied amphibious landing rehearsals for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. After suffering tragic losses the night before due to friendly fire carrying out the first practice assaults, the peril of this exercise increased by early morning of the 28th, when 9 Kriegsmarine E-boats having left Cherbourg shortly after midnight, managed to avoid the British MTBs who’s job it was to patrol and watch the port area, launched a surprise attack on the unsuspecting Allied forces under the cover of darkness and haze of red flairs. The E-boats striking assult combined with a disastrous breakdown in communications and protection amongst the Allies resulted in the loss of hundreds of American lives over the entire exercise. There are many documented acts of heroism during the battle including Pvt. William Sheperd who risked his life to save others. Technically although the Battle of Lyme Bay was a Nazi attack, it was a training exercise and not an official military operation This distinction is likely to of played a role in Pvt William Sheperd not being awarded the Medal of Honor in this case. Despite the chaos, critical lessons were learned by the Allies for the ongoing D-Day preparations. Such as- * The lack of standardized radio frequencies had led to confusion and missed warnings during the German attack. This resulted in a push for clear communication protocols for D-Day. * Soldiers weren't adequately trained on using life jackets during Exercise Tiger. This led to improved lifejacket training for troops before the Normandy landings. * The lack of dedicated rescue craft for downed soldiers in Lyme Bay highlighted the need for a robust rescue plan on D-Day. This resulted in the deployment of small boats specifically for rescuing survivors in the water. Siebelferrie series part XI Metal beam connected leichte Ponton 40 siebelferrie General information: In order to have enough landing craft for Operation Sea Lion (conquest of the British Isles), a quick, simple solution was needed. Colonel Siebel (who was the owner of a aircraft factory „Siebel-Flugzeugwerke“) used the engineers‘ heavy bridge equipment. He connected two pontoon ferries with steel girders. The ferries were powered by 2x75 hp (later up to 500 hp) V-8 engines at the rear and by 3 BMW aircraft engines of 300 hp each. There was the Siebel ferry 40 and 41. But it was supposed to become much more than a temporary solution... This ferrie: After the Gebert ferries, this first Siebel ferrie was invented by Siebel. He had the idea to Build new and bigger ferries for the sea lion landing operation. He used some of this „leichte Ponton 40“ and connected it with metal beams. This ferrie had no platform between the pontoons. The BMW aircraft engine was taken on the beams. So at sea it was hard to repair for example. And this ferrie had not much space. Personal and vehicles were placed on the pontoons only. It was incapable to transport heavy trucks and tanks. There are documents -this ferrie existed- but no photos of the ferrie in the done state stadium. So I don‘t know where the cockpit was and so I don’t builded it. I think it was only at the end of one of the two pontoons. With the public walking past the torperdoboot, the photos was likely taken during Navy Week or another public event. With the dark paint color, the photo was likely taken during the late 1920s since this scheme was common during that decade. The forward 10.5cm /45 mounts are secured. Note the wings extensions of the bridge are no longer fabric like previous types of torpedoboots. She was launched March 15th, 1928 and commissioned January 15th, 19129 . With two geared turbines with an max output of 25,500hp, Tiger was capable of speeds up to 35.2 knots. Her range was 3,900 nautical miles at 17 knots. So wurde die Gefährdungslage des Schiffes stark reduziert, vom eigenen oder befreundeten Militär versehentlich angegriffen zu werden. Die Abdunkelung von Bug und Heck und die beigemalte Bug/Heckwelle sollten dem Gegner die Silhouette der "Bismarck" kürzer erscheinen lassen und eine andere Geschwindigkeit vortäuschen. Bei dem Unternehmen "Rheinübung" wurden die "Baltikumtarnung" und die Abdunkelungen beim Zwischenstopp in Norwegen jedoch mit grauer Farbe übermalt. Lediglich die "falsche" Bugwelle wurde beibehalten. . . ENG: Battleship "Bismarck" with the well-known camouflage - the horizontal stripes and the darkening on the bow and stern. The horizontal stripes are part of the so-called "Baltic camouflage", which was also used by other Navy ships for identification in the Baltic Sea. This greatly reduced the risk of the ship being accidentally attacked by its own or friendly military. The darkening of the bow and stern and the painted bow/stern wave were intended to make the silhouette of the "Bismarck" appear shorter to the enemy and to simulate a different speed. However, in the "Rheinübung" operation, the "Baltic camouflage" and the darkening during the stopover in Norway were painted over with gray paint. U-45 during his career sunk the British Motor Merchant ship Lochavon and the French French Steam merchant ship “Bretagne” for a total of 19 313 GRT. Guten Morgen, and here we have a return to the never-builds, with the German super destroyer Elbing. She was envisaged as a class of six so-called Spahkreuzers or reconnaissance cruisers for the Kriegsmarine, tasked with scouting ahead of the main battle groups centred around the H class battleships and Graf Zeppelin aircraft carriers. They were initially designed to have a seaplane mounted on a catapult amidships to assist with searching for allied convoys, a rather novel feature for destroyers of the day, but then logic prevailed and the seaplane was replaced by two quintuple torpedo tubes. If built, the Spahkreuzers would have weighed in at 5,700 tons and mounted 6 5.9inch, 2 88mm and 8 37mm guns, far outweighing and outmatching contemporary destroyers. The choice of mounting two main armament turrets at the stern was to allow for a more offensive retreat in the event of meeting with allied squadrons. Of the six ships requested, only one was actually begun, and during an air raid on Kiel in 1942 the ship plans were destroyed and construction halted for good. La idea era bombardear la costa oeste de Estados Unidos con un grupo de estos submarinos ya que solo podían transportar 3 aviones Su tamaño era similar al de un destructor (120 m de eslora, 12 de manga) aunque era mucho más pesado, ya que tenía 4.700 t en superficie y 5.700 sumergido. On this day in 1876, Erich Raeder was born. Raeder attained the highest possible naval rank, that of grand admiral, in 1939, becoming the first person to hold that rank since Henning von Holtzendorff in 1918. Raeder led the Kriegsmarine for the first half of the war; he resigned in January 1943 and was replaced by Karl Dönitz. At the Nuremberg trials he was sentenced to life imprisonment but was released early owing to failing health in 1955.

Siebelferrie series part X Gebert Fähre (armed version) General information: In order to have enough landing craft for Operation Sea Lion (conquest of the British Isles), a quick, simple solution was needed. Colonel Siebel (who was the owner of a aircraft factory „Siebel-Flugzeugwerke“) used the engineers‘ heavy bridge equipment. He connected two pontoon ferries with steel girders. The ferries were powered by 2x75 hp (later up to 500 hp) V-8 engines at the rear and by 3 BMW aircraft engines of 300 hp each. There was the Siebel ferry 40 and 41. But it was supposed to become much more than a temporary solution... This ferrie: This ferrie was the better version of my second post of the Siebel ferrie series. And the precursor of the Siebel ferries. After the victory over France, Third Reich planned Operation Seelöwe. So they needed landing boats. In France they captured some ferries and barges but they was huge their sizes,lifting capacity and speed was too different to organize their cooperation. And the amount of them was low. So the decision was offered by 47 engineer(sapper, pioneer) battalion. They recommend to use two pontoons (they were used since WW1). Between two pontons the deck was placed. It was possible to carry 35 tons. So it can carry heavy artillery, vehicles, equipment. It was powered by 2 aviational BMW engines and 3 diesel engines with propeller screw and 78 horse power each. So they decided to use material they had in excess, the heavy ponton complect B. July 1940the ferrie was designed. Armed with two machine guns (maybe MG34) (I dont found a photo where you can see them, so I don Not builded them) and 8.8cm gun. But amount of pontoons themselves was only about 25.
