This Caterpillar Club pin belonged to Flt Lt Gerald Wilton RAF, who escaped his Halifax Mk III Heavy Bomber during a nighttime raid over Berlin in March 1944. A Jewish refugee, Wilton spent the remainder of the Second World War in a POW camp. People often ask ‘what’s your best find’.. Mine isn’t valuable to me but invaluable to family involved. I found this WW2 medal nearby, it had ‘TJ Best’ and his service number on the rim..I traced it and found his brother Max still alive..really nice old fella, he told me his brother TJ survived the sinking of the HMS Canberra, 1942 Solomon Isles, Australia’s worst ever maritime disaster. TJ returned, carrying shrapnel, hit the bottle, estranged from his family and dead by the time his son John (pictured) was only ten. I rang John, he came down the next day..real nice bloke..all he had of his dad’s was an old crumpled faded black and white photo. I dropped his dad’s medal in his hand saying ‘the last bloke to touch this was your dad, and he was/is a f**k’n war hero’..well that got the tears going...70 years of them.. We discussed PTSD and how differently TJ’s (family’s) life would have been had PTSD been understood and treated. These men were thrown back in to civilian life with little or no help. Updated post. One of my newest purchases and probably one of the most Interesting ribbon bars I have had in several years. Unfortunately its unidentified at the moment. However due his length of service 1918-1919 to at least 1950-1952 or somewhere in the time frame of 32 to 34 years of service he was most likely a captain who possibly advanced to the rank of rear admirl by the time he retired. It would also be safe to assume he was a graduate of the Naval Academy or one of the other military academys at the time. His awards are fairly impressive and unusual at the same time. He was awarded the Legion of Merit,Bronze Star with combat V, Navy Commendation with combat V, Navy Unit Citation,.Army Presidential Unit Citation with 1 oak leaf cluster as well as the Philippines Defense ribbon with Star. Another Interesting thing to note is the award of two Army Presidential Unit Citations and not the Navy presidential unit citation as well as the award of the Navy Unit Citation. At the moment I have only seen one other ribbon bar that has that and its Identified to Vice Admiral John T. Hayward who worked on the Manhattan Project. Another thing to not on this ribbon bar if the Philippine Defense Ribbon with 1 bronze star witch means he was in the Philippines early on during Ww2 as the its was only authorized from December 8th 1941 to June 15th 1942. The Bronze star is authorized for personal who participated in a engagement with the enemy or Assigned or stationed in Philippine territory or in Philippine waters for not less than 30 days during the period. The 1939 - 1945 Star, Medal for completed operational service overseas - This was a campaign medal of the British Commonwealth, awarded for service in the Second World War to personnel who completed operational service overseas between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945 (2 Sept 1945 in Far East). To apply for the 1939 to 1945 Star, you must have: 180 days operational service in the army in the above qualifying areas. A good starter medal for new collectors, steeped in good history. I was reminded I somehow hadn't obtained one yet for some reason when I read 'Seahorse In The Sky' (1969) by Edmund Cooper, wherein the protagonist is forced to declare his rank and standing to what appears to be a knight of yore in armour, and makes up things that sound impressive on the spot. This includes that he earned The 1939 - 1945 Star, and is never mentioned again. On a tangent away from the medal, I'm not a fan of Science Fiction on the whole. Some great examples, but it's far from my go-to. This however turned out to be an excellent read, focusing more on the nature of humans and existence as a whole. More of a delve into exploration and the true meaning of life, and all life in the known universe. Also some gore and mystery involving fairies, knights, metal spiders, hand grenades and cavemen. Couldn't put it down, I was hooked. Friedrich Wachowiak (13 February 1920 – 16 July 1944) was a German military aviator who served in the Luftwaffe during World War II. As a fighter ace, he was credited with 89, potentially up to 140, aerial victories—that is, 89 aerial combat encounters resulting in the destruction of the enemy aircraft—claimed in an unknown number of combat missions. All of his documented victories were claimed over the Eastern Front. Wachowiak was born in Somborn, present-day part of Dortmund, and following fighter pilot training was posted to Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52—52nd Fighter Wing) in July 1940. He claimed his first aerial victory on 24 June 1941 during Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross in April 1942. In 1943 and early 1944, he served as a fighter pilot instructor and came back to the front in May 1944. Heinrich Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein (14 August 1916 – 21 January 1944) was a German night fighter pilot and flying ace during World War II. At the time of his death, Sayn-Wittgenstein was the highest-scoring night fighter pilot in the Luftwaffe and still the third highest by the end of World War II, with 83 aerial victories to his credit. Born on 14 August 1916 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn joined the cavalry of the German Wehrmacht in spring of 1937. He was accepted for flight training and transferred to the emerging Luftwaffe. He initially served as an observer and then as a pilot in Kampfgeschwader 1 (KG 1) and Kampfgeschwader 51 (KG 51). He saw action with these units in the Battle of France, Battle of Britain, and Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, before he transferred to the night fighter force. He claimed his first aerial victory on the night of 6/7 May 1942. By October 1942, he had accumulated 22 aerial victories, for which he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on 7 October 1942. He received the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves on 31 August 1943, for 54 aerial victories. Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein was appointed to command Nachtjagdgeschwader 2 (NJG 2) in January 1944, and was killed in action on the night of 21 January 1944. Col Dowsett was a Graduate of the Us Naval Academy in June of 1936 and served in the Marines until June 30th 1966 when he finally retired after 30 honorable years in the marine corps. Dowsett Retired from the Marines as a Full Colonel after 30 years of service. Upon Retirement he was awarded the Navy and Marines corps commodation medal. Dowsett served in WW2 and was one the planers of the IWO JIMA landings. Also during ww2 Dowsett served as the 5th marine divisions G5 and G3. Dowsett would Earn the Legion of Merit with V and a Bronze Star with V for his actions during the Iwo Jima campaign. After ww2 Dowsett would serve on a number of different Staff positions before the outbreak of the Korean war. During the Korean war Dowsett served as Executive Officer to the 1st marine division 7th Marines. During the Korean war Dowsett would earn the Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars all with V and one Army award of the Bronze star. Dowsett would also earn the Purple heart when he was Wounded in action on December 6th 1950. After the Korean war Dowsett held a number of different Staff positions until his retirement in 1966 Dowsett was Born on October 13th 1911 in Battle Creek MI and passed away on December 5th 1986 in Annapolis MD The award citations I could find are listed below in the comments.
