One of our favourite patterns is this elegant equestrian print from our collection produced in association with @nationalgallery. The gorgeous chestnut thoroughbred featured in the repeating image is Whistlejacket, painted in about 1762 by the great horse painter, George Stubbs. As legend has it, the painting is so realistic that Whistlejacket tried to attack it when he saw it, believing it to be a rival stallion. With equestrian motifs always in fashion, you don’t need a tackshop to sell these special adjustable and folding canes: they are ideal for retailers of all types. www.classiccanes.co.uk. #classiccanes #walkingstick #walkingcane #whistlejacket #georgestubbs #georgestubbswhistlejacket #britishstyle

George Stubbs, Whistlejacket, 1762, oil on canvas, 292 x 246 cm, National Gallery, London.

What made me put George Stubbs 1770 frightened horses into 'Ignite Mares'? 🐎 A frantic whirl of manes and fear, blended into the red dress of model Emily Hakin, brought this photo shot in the fancy Lordship Park in London to life. Just one of many pictures I transplanted classical paintings into, and that I feature in my book, Surreal Fashion! I talk at length in my Introduction why I used paintings like this. Is it stealing? Borrowing? Rebirthing? Convenient because classical paintings are 70+ years past their copyright? I didn't like people imitating my idea. How ironic! But I was keen to extol how instinctive it felt, not a technique I was forcing, per say. How glorious when a painting fell like a fish into water! Funny enough, years later my work ended up in an exhibition with George Stubbs himself (not living, obvs)😄 Links to buy the Surreal Fashion book in my Bio! ✨️💥 Hardback recommended, it feels so luscious!💗 Thank you @talltimphotos for assisting me on this, and probably more that I forget to add you on, lol... You're a legend!🤪 #SurrealFashionBook #georgestubbs

It's Taurus time! ♉ This sign is notorious for its stubborn nature, represented by the bull. Taurus is an earth sign, along with Virgo and Capricorn. On the zodiac calendar, it follows Aries, a fire sign, and precedes Gemini, an air sign. Alongside their obstinance, Tauruses are characterized by their loyalty, love of comfy clothes, and affinity for nature. On April 19th 1770, Captain James Cook first sighted Australia. The illustration that introduced the Kangaroo to the British public, George Stubbs. 1773. Title: No. 20. [An animal found on the coast of New Holland called Kanguroo.] Printed: London: Strahan and Cadell, 1773. 230 x 270mm. The first British illustration of a kangaroo, published in Hawkesworth’s ‘An Account of the Voyages... For making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere’, which contained the official account of Captain Cook’s visit to Australia and New Zealand on his first circumnavigation. The plate only has a plate number, so the title, as above, comes from the index. However the original illustration was not drawn in Australia but in London, by Britain’s foremost animal painter, George Stubbs (1724-1806). It is believed that it was Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), the naturalist on Cook’s expedition whose diary entry of 12 July 1770 first noted the ‘kanguru’, who commissioned Stubbs to paint a kangaroo and a dingo. As no live specimen of the kangaroo had been brought to England, Stubbs worked from a preserved skin, which he inflated to get an idea of its body shape. The paintings were exhibited at the Royal Society in early 1773, but only the kangaroo was engraved for Hawkesworth. In 2013 the Stubbs oils of both the kangaroo and dingo were subject to a temporary export ban, as important works of ‘Cultural Interest’ in Britain. After a fund-raising campaign the National Maritime Museum purchased the paintings for the nation. English artist George Stubbs, 1724-1806, is recognized by many as the most important painter, draftsman and printmaker of horses. Largely self taught his paintings of horses with their aristocratic owners, jockeys, stable boys or just by themselves, were extremely popular. His portraits of horses were not only praised for their beauty, grace and power but also for their realism and individuality. Because of his study of the animal’s anatomy, the rendering of the body was unprecedentedly accurate. In a country with a tradition in breeding and also racing horses, Stubbs’ talent provided him with numerous commissions. Although he also painted other animals, his depiction of the horse is what he is remembered by in history. Whistlejacket is his most famous work and probably the most famous portrayal of a horse. Influenced by equestrian portraits by famous painters such as Rubens, Velázquez and David, Stubbs put the spotlight on a life size Arabian chestnut stallion. The depiction of the racehorse was commissioned by Charles Watson-Wentworth, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. Notably without rider, saddle or background, the majestic horse is rearing in a levade position. The fact that Whistlejacket has turned its head towards us makes the viewing experience even more breathtaking. Although some believed for a long time the painting was unfinished, Stubbs had a talent for landscape painting, it seems the golden background was a deliberate choice. Not only did he paint shadow at the horse’s hind feet, anything else would have been a distraction from the horse. It was recorded Stubbs had some difficulties sketching the horse as it was somewhat temperamental. It clearly shows. #georgestubbs #stubbs #whistlejacket #historyofart #arthistory #nationalgallery #nationalgalleryofart #paard #paarden #horse #equineart #horses #equine #equestrian #equestrianart #horseart #animal #horseartist #animalart #animals #britishart #britishartist #pferde #cheval #anatomy #anatomical

Why do zebras have black and white stripes? If they were beige and green I could understand...oh the mind boggles 😆 Anyway, this is my miniature painting of 'Zebra' by Lara Byng, After the artist George Stubbs. I have included the stages of the painting and the many layers that go into a painting too. Miniature painting Size: 8cm x 5.5cm The zebra, along with many other exotic animals had been brought over from South Africa as a gift for Queen Charlotte and was one of the lucky ones to have survived the long and perilous journey by sea. Similar to George Stubb's paintings of 'Cheetah and Stag with Two Indians' (Which I have also painted in miniature), the poor lost looking creature looks totally out of place in the very green English woodland. #georgestubbs #painting #miniature #miniatures #tinyart #tinypainting #miniart #dollshouse #dollshouses #zebra #exoticanimal #artistoninstagram #art #artist

My miniature version of 'Cheetah and Stag with two Indian attendants' by Lara Byng, After George Stubb's. I have done quite a few George Stubb's paintings now including some of his lovely dog portraits, his lost looking Zebra in a foreign environment, and a number of his horse paintings for which he is probably best known for but this one appealed to me because it tells a bit of a story. The cheetah along with many other exotic animals was brought over from Africa as a gift for King George III. Many of the animals perished during the gruelling 8 month journey by sea however the cheetah survived and was the first time anyone had ever seen a cheetah in the UK! In this painting you can see the cheetah is in the English countryside being prepared for a grand demonstration of the cheetahs prowess. The man to the right gesturing the cheetah in the direction of the stag but according to a Chronicle written at the time, it was reported that all did not go according to plan. The magnificent Stag apparently stood it's ground and defended itself and the poor frightened cheetah ran away much to the disappointment of onlookers. #georgestubbs #art #miniature #miniaturist #tinyart #tinypainting #dollshouse #dollshousepainting #miniaturepainting #smallthings #cheetah #stag #history #oldmasters #famouspaintings #iloveminiatures #miniac #handheld #dollshouses #dollshouseart

Henry Birche after George Stubbs and Amos Green Mezzotint engraving published by Benjamin Beale Evans, Poultry London March 25 1790. "Game Keepers." Dedicated to the Right Honorable Lord Viscount Torrington. A good rich impression on wove paper on wooden stretcher presented in original gilt gesso frame. 65.5 by 43.5 cms image. 76 by 53.5 cms overall framed. Slight time toning as to be expected otherwise in remarkably good condition. This exceptionally rare Mezzotint is based on a painting by George Stubbs, titled ‘Lord Torrington’s Steward and Gamekeeper with their Dogs at Southill Bedfordshire’. Commissioned by George Byng, fourth Viscount Torrington (1740-1812) in 1767 as one of three portraits of Torrington’s outdoor servants. The gamekeeper in Stubbs painted version and the central figure in this print is Joseph Mann, who worked as a huntsman and then gamekeeper for three successive Lord Torringtons from 1733 to 1777. By 1790, the original painting and its companion work ‘Labourers’ were in the collection of Andrew Harrison, who commissioned painter Amos Green to replace the background view, showing Torrington’s Southill estate, with generalised rustic scenery. Landscape painter and diarist Joseph Farington commented that the alterations were ‘very unworthy’ of Stubbs’s painting.

Beautiful detail from a George Stubbs painting of Lady Louisa Conolly on horseback at Goodwood. Beside her are Mary Duchess of Richmond and Richard Buckner - the bailiff. The painting titled ‘A Study of Horses Exercising’ is from c. 1761 (making Louisa 18) and can be found @goodwood_house_ … which is cannot wait to visit next month!

Lord Bolingbroke's Brood Mare in the Grounds of Lydiard Park by George Stubbs 🖼 Did you join in with the Cheltenham festivities last week? 🏇 Today's #VirtualVisit explores the St John family's connection with horseracing. In the library where this Stubbs copy overlooks the room, the original once hung. It was sold by Lord Bolingbroke at Christies in 1943. The painting was commissioned by Frederick, 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke, the earliest great patron of the artist. Frederick was an immensely wealthy young man and owned a large stable at Lydiard Park. The recently landscaped park can be seen in all its glory with the grand Palladian house in the background. #georgestubbs #stubbs #lydiardpark #lydiardhouse

Dissecting the History of Stubbs | Sculpture: Paper cut, textiles, graphite drawing, pyrography on wood This layered sculpture was commissioned for the George Stubbs and the Anatomy of the Horse exhibition at Normanby Hall. The ground floor is home to artworks by nine artists, including myself, responding to the theme of George Stubbs and the horse. The work is exhibiting from 1st March 2024 - 5th January 2025. 2024 marks 300 years since the birth of the artist George Stubbs. Two of Stubbs’ most loyal patrons were Sir Henry and Lady Nelthorpe of Baysgarth House, Barton Upon Humber. One of his greatest achievements was the publication of the book ‘The Anatomy of the Horse’. All the preliminary work; the physical dissecting, and the illustrating of many horse carcasses in several stage of dissection, was done in Horkstow, only 8 miles away from Normanby Hall Country Park. #InspiredByStubbs #GeorgeStubbs #NormanbyHallCountryPark #NorthLincolnshireMuseums #HumberMuseumsPartnership #ACESupported   @northlincsmuseum @normanbyhall @humbermuseums @aceagrams

“Dark Grey” has arrived ! I’m undecided if I should add a mane or not 🤔 Im influenced by the work of George Stubbs and love his elongated horse forms which often don’t include the fussiness of a mane - what do you think? #georgestubbs #whitstable #horsebridge #horsebridgeartscentre #thehorsebridgeartscentre #whitstableartist #rochesterartfair #canterburyartist #folkestoneartists #horsesofinstagram #horseart #horseartist #equineart #equineartists #equineartistsofinstagram

Whistlejacket, 1762 George Stubbs (British 1724-1806) This large size painting of Whistlejacket, the second Marquess of Rockingham's prize racehorse, is presented full-size and rearing in the levade position usually used in equestrian portraits of military commanders. A specialist horse painter, Stubbs deliberately depicted Whistlejacket without a rider against a blank backdrop, making the viewer focus solely on the majestic beauty and unrestrained power of the Arabian stallion. There’s nothing like surrounding yourself with artistic genius to ignite your own creativity. Apparently we are hard wired to appreciate and be inspired by art. Our right brain absorbs what it sees and expands our creative and innovative thinking. Well, my tiny right brain was on overload on a recent trip to Newmarket! I was lucky enough to stay at the Jockey Club (a real night at the museum!) where the walls are lined with numerous works by Munnings and Stubbs, among many other eminent equine artists. And, if that wasn’t enough, the National Horse Racing Museum was hosting an exhibition of the incredible Lucy Kemp-Welch, the unsung illustrator of Black Beauty. Add a few paintings by Peter Biegel, Lionel Edwards and Frederic Whiting to the mix and I my inspiration levels were off the scale! . #equineart #siralfredmunnings #georgestubbs #lucykempwelch #newmarket #jockeyclub #nationalhorseracingmuseum #artinspiration
