18th C English stippled engraving (after Cosway) of Mrs. Jackson, published April 1, 1794 by John Condé ( British, born in France) with coloured details depicting Mrs Jackson. She was famous for stage work with Kemble, Barrymore and other famous actors. Mrs Jackson was extremely popular of the Georgian period and pictured in other Cosway paintings as well. Condé is considered one of the most famous engravers of all time. He excelled at stippling engravings, mostly a small dotting technique, very time consuming. Wet Sand. Georgia/Switzerland, 2021. Director Elene Naveriani. In a small village by the Georgian Black Sea Eliko, one of the locals, is found hanged. His granddaughter, Moe, comes to the village to deal with the particulars of the funeral and is immediately confronted with a community rooted in prejudice and homophobia stemming from religious beliefs and old-fashioned lifestyles. As we follow Moe during her stay, in an all too familiar setting of an isolated community with a hive-like mob mentality, fear and hatred are fundamental and often never confronted by more progressive points of view. A continual theme throughout the film is the constant news clips on televisions on the effects of global warming on the world beyond the small village, suggesting that as life continues within the village it is unaffected and unconcerned with anything beyond its borders and progression has little room to breathe within its sterile confines. A touching love story is interwoven amongst the wickedness as Moe offers a solace and compassion that is so seldomly experienced as we see grief and loss endured in ways that would seem unbearable. A slow and beautifully symbolic film that is accompanied bya dark score and bands such as SWANS adding perfectly to its rhythmic mood and atmosphere. The Georgian Theatre - Part 4 Peg Woffington Peg was from Dublin and had spent her early years helping her mother as a hawker of vegetables. Her father had been a bricklayer in Dublin but had already died by 1720 leaving Peg and her mother destitute. She joined a theatrical act at the age of just 10, showing a remarkable talent. Her first major success came playing Ophelia in 1737. Her finest part, however was considered to be Sir Harry Wildair in ‘The Constant Couple’ and also Silvia in ‘The Recruiting Officer’ , both parts requiring male clothing. She played both roles at Covent Garden and Drury Lane over the seasons. Later she played Helena in ‘A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream’. She had a relationship with David Garrick, another successful actor who played Lear to Peg’s Cordelia. When Garrick became manager of Drury Lane, Peg left probably due to awkwardness as they had split up, and returned to Dublin. Peg played her last in 1757 back in London’s Covent Garden as Rosalind in ‘As You Like It’. She fell ill and could not finish the performance. She died 3 years later having never returned to health in 1760. The book ‘Peg Woffington’ by Charles Reade originally written in 1853 tells the story of her, but in what we may now consider a glamourised version making her out as becoming a ‘humble , pious, long-repentant Christian’; a doubtful reality. 🎭 As 19 of us are approaching a finish-line in devising the epic of Gilgamesh 🪕 with the help of our beloved Dody DiSanto, I’m reminded of “Nine Times More”, a monoplay that I directed and acted in (author - Lasha Bughadze), in beautiful Batumi Drama Theatre. (Costume also designed by me; Scene design by Giorgi Shalikashvili). There are huge lessons learned in working alone, with small groups, as well as co-creating a piece with eighteen other individuals. Today also marks the birthday of Georgian theatre actress of Armenian descent Anastasia (Taso) Abashidze (1881-1958). She was the daughter of theatre actors Vaso Abashidze (1854-1926) and Mako (Mariam) Saparova-Abashidze (1860-1940). Abashidze was born on March 17, 1881 in Tiflis Governorate, Russian Empire. She graduated from the Women's Gymnasium in Tiflis and received her theatrical training in Paris. In 1899, she joined the Tiflis theatre troupe; her debut role was Masho, in Georgian-Armenian playwright Natalia Dondarova's “Money and Quality”. Abashidze enjoyed a successful theatrical life and career, having performed in more than 100 roles. Her most notable roles included Guyane in Alexander Sumbatashvili's “Betrayal”, Nutsa in Valerian Gunia's “Parade”, Beatrice in Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing”, and Dorine in Molière's “Tartuffe”, among others. She also performed in operettas and opera performances and was known to sing at parties. In 1926, she starred in Alexandre Tsutsunava’s film “Khanuma” as Qabato. In 1953, on the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the Georgian Theatre, she wrote, “I am happy to have witnessed the 100th anniversary of the restoration of my native Georgian theatre. Especially since my father, Vaso Abashidze, my mother, Mako Saparova-Abashidze, and I have sacrificed over a century and a half for the welfare of the theatre.” Abashidze received several state awards, including People's Artist of the Republic of Georgia in 1943.
