The next 3 posts will feature Edwardian evening gowns, c. 1908-1919, probably all worn by the same stylish great aunt. This fairy garden gown has been difficult to date. Comprised of 2 pieces, the bodice has a deceptive appearance. Beneath the blousy exterior is an attached cinched undergarment w/ stays. The scalloped neckline is lined w/ layers of frilly ruffles. Above that is a trim of grey & black metallic beading & sequins. According to newspaper ads, metallic beading in both silver & gold was highly fashionable c.1914-1916. The bodice is edged w/ a crocheted lace trim that rests lightly on the hips. On the close-up photo notice that this trim is only loosely stitched on, an indication that it could be easily traded out to other garments. The skirt is constructed of 3 distinct layers. The undermost layer is made of a thick, crisp fabric (a sateen cotton or taffeta?). The middle layer is a full silk skirt. The outermost layer repeats the silk fabric, but is shorter, cut in an undulating line & trimmed w/ more metallic beading. The light gossamer fabric, the short overskirt w/ its curvilinear trim, & the loose bodice are of a later, style, but the heavily ruffled shoulders are more a feature of the earlier Edwardian style-very Gibson Girl in its flowery femininity. But that’s part of the interest in a family collection like this. These are not designer pieces found in museums. Not House of Worth. Not Paul Poiret. These women poured over women’s journals & admired their friends’ styles. Then they worked w/ their dressmaker to interpret the trends & incorporate the elements that flattered them best. I wish there was a way to share how soft this shimmering white silk is. It doesn’t seem to have discolored at all. However, the ruffles & beading have. I imagine the ruffles were closer to a champagne pink & the beading was more of a tinsel-y silver. There is significant interior wear in the bodice. More than perspiration, it appears to be residue of a deodorant lotion that adhered to the fabric. So it was either worn by a highly nervous young women…a wedding, perhaps? Or it was a ball gown whose wearer spent it evening whirling in dance.

I also took the opportunity to get some modelled photographs of the Emmeline Edwardian Walking Skirt for the Classic Collection as I've never gotten round to doing this before. The wild garlic was just the perfect backdrop! This is the khaki linen trimmed in cream. It's a shade darker than beige with a hint more green. It's not a colour I would normally reach for personally, but apprently I carry it off rather well! It's the same base skirt as the Sylvia, but with different trimming detail. It’s visually stunning, with the eye-conic Mike Wazowski representation. I mobile ordered it, and it was made fresh when I arrived. It is a single scoop of eye scream, with Jordan almond ears, on a small waffle cone 👏The good: if you like pistachio ice cream this is top tier quality, no fake coloring either, it was scrumptious. The jordan almond ears were a really nice surprise and were also delish. The white chocolate coating was tasty, not too sweet. 👎 The bad: This eye scream cone will lull you into a false sense of security that you can walk away from Gibson girl without keeping your EYE on it. But make no mistake, Mike Wazowskis insides are turning into a puddle of goo. The moment you bite into it, the melted ice cream will be alllll over your hands. Half of my eye scream cone either went all over my hands or on the floor. My advice would be to eat it at Gibson girl immediately, ask for a bowl, and grab plenty of napkins. There is no photographic evidence of me eating this cone bc I was held hostage by this eeeeye scream cone, my hands were literally covered with eyeee scream. I can't believe the beautiful dappled sunshine we had for my bluebell shoot on Sunday. One dry day amidst a seemingly endless wet, grey spring, but here in this magical hidden woodland not too far from home I stepped in front of the camera for the first time in months. I've been dealing with a lot health-wise which has really knocked my body confidence, but you can't beat twirling in a swishy skirt and the support of friends to lift you up. Despite the sunshine, it was still a very chilly day and I was glad to have the beautiful shawl and mitts made by mum as a christmas gift. I don't think I've shared my everyday version of the Cadogan Braid updo? I did a reel with a high pompadour in the front a while ago, but this version is what I actually wear in my day to day. It's so simple: Just two pin curls in the front and one braid in the back, pinned up (And no, my braid is not this thick all by it's lonesome. I always wear 1-3 hairpieces when I do these styles. My hairdresser has toned mine to make them a better match for my multicolored hair. I highly recommend doing so, if you'll think about investing in some real hairpieces/extensions! This sweet, summer frock keeps coming back in style, from the Gunne Sax of my youth, to Cottage Core today. I’d date this one to c.1895-1910. It features a rose print over a white-on-white window pane check, which serves as trellis for the roses. Although we photographed the dress out of season, I can imagine it on a hot summer day on a woman with Gibson girl hair piled high under a large hat or parasol. The fabric is transparent and so light she would have remained cool even with added layers of underpinnings and petticoats. The bodice features a high collar, tiny black buttons, and 3/4-length sleeves. The lacy ruffle on the yoke is repeated on the cuffs and at the hem of the large sweeping skirt. A tiny tie gathers at the back of the waist, creating a loose, blousy effect. As it was a cloudy day, the shimmering whites take on a gothic, ghostly tone, but the soft romanticism comes through. Its the perfect Edwardian gown for lawn parties, picnics, and walks through the garden, although sometimes the term Edwardian doesn’t feel quite right, evoking more formality and visions of the reserved, crisp attire worn for tea and croquet. This frock wouldn’t require a corset and the woman could perhaps go on a more rustic country picnic on the Fox River in Algonquin, Illinois, or a seaside excursion along a beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island, two locations the family summered in the early 1900s. Rather than looking to fashion plates for similar examples, I turned to the art of the American Impressionists, Childe Hassam, Robert Reid, and Frederick Carl Frieseke, for their loose, casual depictions of women in their summery, white frocks. These works range from a more formal portrait to a looser, plein air style, perfectly capturing the era.

I didn't get around to telling you that my Mum crocheted me some beautiful historybounding accessories for Christmas. I've been wanting to do a cosy, lilaccy-purple cottagecore photoshoot since then, but I've really struggled with putting myself in front of a camera this winter.
