Content Warning : death Fanny Cochraine Smith🇦🇺🦘🌏 Born in 1834 A native of Australia, the last to speak a language belonging to the native population of Tasmania (Flinders Island lingua franca). Smith's original name is unknown because she was given a European name in an attempt to suppress the culture of the Australian natives . In 1842 she attended the Queen's Orphan School in Hobart to learn domestic service skills, however, the conditions at the school were very poor. She worked as a domestic helper and married in 1854. Truganini (another indigenous Australian) died in 1876 so Smith was now the last Tasmanian indigenous Australian . She tried to keep the traditions of the Australian indigenous people alive and traveled and performed the songs of the native people of Australia. The songs have been recorded on a phonograph cylinder and can be listened e.g. on YouTube. Smith died of pneumonia in 1905. The 2nd picture shows Smith recording her songs on a phonograph cylinder. ⚠️From 1820s to 1832 the Australian Island State of Tasmania went through a genocide almost destroying the Indigenous Tasmanians and so their culture, language and traditions. Day 4: Favorite sewing technique I like using bias tape or any type of stretch of fabric to cheat my hems. I just sew it straight down and flip it over and tack it down. Makes it so much easier for me to deal with hems. Historical sewing in general has taught me that it’s okay to cheat things too. I don’t have to be perfect with my projects. Learning to accommodate myself as a disabled artist is difficult, especially when you want to seem as polished as everyone else seems. But it’s not real. Don’t push yourself for perfection. OR Pillbox cap . . Much like the later Broderick and forage cap the pillbox cap was worn as an undress form of headress when the full dress bearskin was not in use , the army normally styles itself off the fashion of the time and the pillbox cap was no different , much like some modern militaries nowerdays wear baseball caps as a form of military headdress . . Made of a stiff buckram band , oil skin and what’s near enough tunic material the cap would be worn in the top of the wearers head at what would be considered a jaunty angle , two hooks were sewn on the inside at an angle to accommodate the chinstrap so that it would still function at said jaunty angle , the chinstrap itself was made from just a simple piece of leather with multiple holes on the end to adjust to the wearers size . . Other ranks caps were dark navy and red felt with red piping , Sgt’s would swap all the red for gold . I present the final for my Advanced Draping class: a recreation of a striped promenade dress from an 1892 fashion plate, made from striped silk and blue dupioni. The skirt and bodice were altered from Truly Victorian patterns, while the blouse insert was draped by me. The registered trademark for Birney’s Catarrh Powder showed how to take it - the bottle came with a tube so the patient could blow a dose straight up their nose. The product was promoted as a cure for colds, flu and hay fever. The main ingredient was cocaine. In 1894, a wealthy Chicago widow called Annie C Meyers became addicted to Birney’s Catarrh Powder and lost everything. She wrote about her experiences in a memoir called Eight Years in Cocaine Hell (1902), describing how she embarked on a life of crime to fund her habit. Tweed Run over the years: 2018 🚲 For my second Tweed Run, I made a ca. 1896 cycling ensemble, featuring tweed bloomers and a jacket. The cut was based on an original pattern from a Victorian fashion magazine. I was really amazed with how comfortable the bloomers turned out to be, and I’d definitely wear them again cycling in the future. The fulness of the trouser fabric imitated the shape of a skirt and therefore, though originally quite scandalous, they became considered appropriate enough for women to wear while cycling in the 1890s. This project was my first ever attempt at Victorian women’s tailoring and it’s interesting to see all that I’ve learned since. Presenting Monsieur Georges Feydeau (1862-1921). Nominated by mitchell.nevillteague , Feydeau was a French playwright eminent during the Belle Époque era. His farcical plays written between 1886 and 1914 are particularly of note. The plays of Feydeau are marked by closely observed characters, with whom his audiences could identify, plunged into fast-moving comic plots of mistaken identity, attempted adultery, split-second timing and a precariously happy ending. After the great success they enjoyed in his lifetime they were neglected after his death, until the 1940s and 1950s, when productions by Jean-Louis Barrault and the Comédie-Française led a revival of interest in his works, at first in Paris and subsequently worldwide. Feydeau’s personal life was marred by depression, unsuccessful gambling and divorce. In 1919 his mental condition deteriorated sharply and he spent his final two years in a mental institution at Rueil (now Rueil-Malmaison), near Paris. Van Berg This article describes the art of selecting models for photographs and uses photographs of a single model to illustrate the breadth of expression sought after in models. The photographer is Charles I Berg, a famous New York architect who took up art photography in 1887. 🩷 Sewing patterns in my store 🩷 I'm very happy to finally share this Princess Slip I made following a 1899 fashion plate. I tried to be as precise as possible in placing the seams where the plate showed. Besides wearing a bust improver, I also highly suggest to add my LVU04 bustle pad to enhance the curves around the waist/hips area. In the final patterns (the ones on the store) I also added more volume on the back since my finished garment do not have that much. As regards materials I used a cotton sateen fabric, satin ribbon and vintage laces: if you're wondering I'm not a fan of using historical laces for many reasons. Important: I updated the measurements tables of my improvers. Each improver adds a different measurement on the hip area now. This pattern has the necessary cm/inch to wear the LVU04 improver. This photo was taken during the tenant period, when the building served as private housing. Edward R. So excited about this convertible shirtwaist! Slowly building up my 1890's historical/historybounding capsule wardrobe, and this blouse is just *chef's kiss* The long sleeves attach using hooks and eyes, so I can wear it to events, and then take them off so they're fully functional in the unreasonable Texas weather. (Highs in the 90's next week--no joke!) It could be a little smoother and fit me a little better, but it was a good instant gratification project post-unicorn.
