Several people in the DMs have been asking for wrist and elbow mobility work. These are my favorite wrist mobility exercises outside of various full-body exercises that I like such as a farmer’s carry, Olympic weightlifting, and gymnastics. The most important thing to remember with the movements in these videos is that I am actively pressing my hand into the floor the entire time. People often complain about wrist pain when the hand is in these positions, but it is because they are passively stretching them, not actively strengthening them through a full range of motion. Pressing the hand into the floor will create a lot of stability in the wrist. You will simultaneously strengthen AND stretch the wrist by doing this. The first two exercises are isometric and a good starting place for everyone. The farther you lean forward (exercise 1) or backward (exercise 2), the more intense it becomes. So, if you need it to be easier, don’t lean as far forward/backward. The last two exercises will add a rotational component which will benefit the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Make sure to save these! ELBOW PAIN💫 . 🏓Tennis elbow is pain located to the outside of your elbow - you don’t need to be a tennis player to experience this and generally repetitive gripping or twisting can be the culprit. . When tennis elbow is the issue, your wrist extensors (brings back of your hand upward) are what we hone in on. . ⛳️Golfer’s elbow is pain located to the inside of the elbow, and again no golf required. . This area is home to your wrist/forearm flexor tendons (curls your palm towards your forearm🤌🏻). . 🧐What gets missed in these situations is that even though you’re having pain in your elbow -it’s generally NOT the elbow’s “fault” . 💪🏻The elbow itself is mostly just a hinge joint stuck inbetween two larger range of motion joints (wrist and shoulder) so if you’re having elbow pain you need to address what’s happening at the wing and wrist as well. . This injury can often be very painful and linger...so managing load in the area & modifying activities that are aggravating are important. And yes that may include you grabbing the water pitcher with your other hand or moving your keyboard around. . The exercises demonstrated are generally used for tennis elbow but if you’re experiencing golfer’s elbow you would simply flip the start motion for the eccentric movement. Like it? Overuse injuries are injuries that result from repetitive microtrauma, typically caused by excessive and/or repetitive use of a particular part of the body. These types of injuries can be common in athletes, but also occur in individuals who perform repetitive tasks in their work or daily activities. Some examples of overuse injuries include: Tennis elbow: The term ‘Tennis elbow’ is used to describe pain found on the outer part of the elbow and the upper part of the forearm. The pain is due to inflammation of the tendon and bony protuberance at the outer part of the elbow, the lateral epicondyle. You do not have to play Tennis to get Tennis Elbow. Runner’s knee: This essentially means softening of the cartilage covering the knee cap. Portions of the cartilage may then be under either too much or too little pressure. This may result in cartilage deterioration at the inner surface of the knee cap. Pain is usually felt during running and also felt after sitting for a long period of time with the knee bent. Plantar fasciitis: The cause of plantar fasciitis is stretching or tearing the broad connective tissue on the bottom of the foot (plantar fascia) which goes from the base of the toes and attaches to the heel. The symptoms are pain in a specific area on the bottom of the foot towards the heel, possibly radiating towards the ball of the foot. The foot feels tender early in the morning and becomes less painful with movement. It is often associated with pronation and a fallen arch. Overuse injuries can be prevented by gradually increasing the intensity and duration of physical activity, taking breaks when needed, and incorporating proper rest and recovery into your routine. Why do i have elbow and wrist pain? Elbow and wrist pain can be debilitating and interfere significantly in day-to-day tasks. Opening jars, using a computer and even writing with a pen can all become difficult to do and lead to frustration with what might seem like such a small injury. For some people, the cause of your pain might be clear, you might have fallen on your arm or sustained a sports injury. For many people it isn’t so obvious, as Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs) are frequently encountered in the elbow and wrist due to repetitive movements and the fact we use these relatively small joints a lot with daily tasks. Wrist-related strains and injuries often occur due to continuous repetitive activities, as well as from heavy lifting or exercises that exert pressure on the wrists. Carpal tunnel syndrome is another prevalent wrist condition characterized by nerve compression that results in tingling and weakness in the hand and wrist. Should pain or symptoms such as numbness and tingling persist at your elbow or wrist becoming worse over time, consulting a physiotherapist or GP is important, as timely rehabilitation is important for full recovery.
