Meanwhile a Great Tit demonstrates neat eating and a Greater Spotted Woodpecker doesn't and a Marsh Frog keeps a distance from a Coots nest! Back on the Millpond a Grebe gets on with life and Heron's keep a look out - one from the reedbed the other by overflying. It's Wildlife Wednesdays! This week, we have a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a striking bird native to the UK. They have black and white wings, a buff chest, and black heads, and males and juveniles have flashes of red on the backs of their heads and on the undersides of their tails. You can spot them by their bouncing flight or see them clinging to trees. Woodpeckers are well known for their distinctive drumming on trees in the spring and for their loud call. They also excavate holes in trees, so they can nest. These birds usually eat a diet of insects and larvae in the spring and summer, and then they will switch to eating berries and nuts in the autumn and winter. Tuesday afternoon was spent with some familiar friends at Warnham Local Nature Reserve. A Coot was nesting pretty well in the same place as it or another Coot nested last year. A Greater Spotted Woodpecker showed off its feeding style while a Magpie demonstrates its own all-embracing approach.
