The Scaly Ground Roller is a bird species native to Madagascar. It’s known for its striking appearance with scales-like patterns on its plumage. It’s a ground-dwelling bird and part of the roller family, characterized by their vibrant colours. The Scaly Ground Roller inhabits the rainforests of northeastern Madagasca, where they can forage for insects and small vertebrates on the ground. It is one of my favourite birds from Madagasca, have photographed both at Andasibe and Masoala. Andasibe is easy to access by car from Tana, whereas Masoala is more complicated to visit, but I prefer Masoala more, there are more cool birds there, at one point I nearly photographed two of those ground rollers together foraging on the ground near Arol Lodge. Gosling - Whilst out with my camera I happened upon a greylag and its chicks. The sun broke through the clouds briefly to allow me a few minutes to take some sharp images. This day is all about trying to change the public's perspective on hyenas. At Yorkshire Wildlife Park two hyena cubs Maverick and Monty were born in October 2020. Hyena birth is extremely rare in European zoos! Born to mother Granada who arrived at the park from a zoo in Spain to join Speedy the cub’s father who came from France earlier in 2020. The pair settled in really well together and it was not long before staff thought that there could be cubs on the way. Male Kingfisher - with fish (and eggs!!) After going through some of my many images I have taken over the last few weeks, I stumbled across this image of a kingfisher and its prey! The fish was clearly full of eggs and i managed to capture the moment she released some! Hopefully some made it but this image amazed me! I really should look at what I have taken pictures of! 😂 Fun fact : Many of the worlds Kingfishers don't eat fish and often don't go near water. When the Kingfisher hits the water their eyes are closed and they nest in burrows dug into river banks. Dunkeld and Birnam walks are full of wee trails leading through some of the best areas of the Perthshire forest. The woods are alive with the sounds of different species of bird, Like this little Tree Creeper for example. I’ve always wanted to photograph one of these wee birds since I seen them at the caravan. I’m glad I did because he/she even took a moment to pause for their picture 🥳. Remember to always respect wildlife and their habitat when photographing them, Always maintain a safe distance so never to frighten or spook them. Some facts about the Tree Creeper: 1. The treecreeper has many regional names: the Somerset name, tree mouse, is perhaps most appropriate, as this bird does creep up trees in a mouse-like manner. 2. Treecreepers always go up trees, never down. When they get to the top they fly to the bottom of the next tree. 3. They are almost entirely insectivorous, with spiders and other small insects forming the bulk of their diet. In winter they make take some small seeds. 4. The cuckoo bee - Flavous nomad bee (Nomada flava) this parasitic bug targets the chocolate mining bee and can be found on low lying vegetation when its sunny. Fact of the Day : In the UK we have a number of Cuckoo bees which takes over the nest of its host species and kills the queen. The bar-tailed trogon (Apaloderma vittatum) is a species of bird in the family Trogonidae. It is a resident bird to central Africa that eats primarily insects and fruit. Found in moist montane forest. Usually seen singly or in pairs. Quiet and inconspicuous bird of the mid-story. Usually detected by song. This individual belongs to a distinctive population in the middle. it was photographed in Kakamega, Kenya. The birds look very different from other areas in central Africa. My friend African birding expert told me it’s split to new species it I can’t find the name of it.
