Thank you @hearst for the invitation to this morning’s #sustainablecitiessummit The panelists offered an opportunity to reflect on my own misgivings around the sustainability of towers and super talls. In juxtaposition with suburban sprawl, they are an obvious improvement. However, there is a lot of room for us to grow (pun intended). Incorporating green space into these new developments is not only an ecological imperative but a drastic improvement to the quality of life for humans occupying these spaces. As part of the LEED certification process, now required for new construction in NYC, sustainable construction and operations is at the forefront of the conversation. But honestly, where I find all of us to be lacking is in the operations and maintenance going forward. The lack of coordination presents a unique challenge in supporting these projects in living up to their reputations. For example, NYC’s Green Economy Plan doesn’t even include jobs for horticultural professionals. Who is intended to maintain all of these green infrastructure investments? That’s where we come in. Today we are building the business that will be needed for the city of tomorrow. In 2011, I (Rosemarie) spent about a year living abroad. I spent months researching aquatic ecology in Fiji and Australia, completing species abundance surveys as we snorkeled for hours a day. Working on field research had always been a dreamy aspiration, and to do so in places I had only ever read about, surely made it worth the intense financial struggle. The several months that followed were spent working on organic farms in the south of France, struggling to communicate the depth of my experience (or any experience really), I somehow fostered incredible connections to the land stewards there. This was the time in my life where I proved to myself that against all odds, all things are possible. And so this is a reminder, to you and to myself, to keep striving. Last night was the first time that I (Rosemarie) participated on a panel. It was really fun once the nerves subsided and in large part that is thanks to Shanti @designwildny who hosted the event with such grace and aplomb. Thank you for breaking the ice with your warmth! Jessica Kaplan from @riversideparknyc gave me a new appreciation for the functionality of spring ephemera, Sara Evans @historicgreenwood spoke about the very gothic paw paw, who is pollinated by carrion flies and stirs poetry deep in dark hearts everywhere, William Curtis Bey @greenbeygardens gave us a peek into the storied history of black and indigenous wisdom rooted in the landscape and Juan Correa @bluedahlia.nyc showed off the stunning and unique products that can result from paulownia harvesting. I LOVED hearing from folks who have their hands in the dirt on the daily and I think the audience really appreciated this perspective too. It's Spring! NYC's parks aren't just patches of green amid the urban sprawl; they're vibrant hubs of culture, history, and serenity. From the iconic expanse of Central Park, a masterpiece of design and escape, to the lesser-known gems like the High Line, where nature meets modern artistry, each park tells its own unique story. Whether it's a leisurely stroll in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, soaking in the views from Riverside Park, or discovering the tranquil nooks of the East River Park, there's a green space for every mood and moment. Today we look at NYC's "Green Masterpiece," Central Park. The so-called lung of NYC, Central Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1858. This sprawling 843-acre park is a masterpiece of landscape architecture, designed to offer urban dwellers an escape into nature. It's a living painting that changes with every season. The creation of Central Park, which was to consist of some 800 acres of public forest, pathways, promenades, lakes, bridges, and meadows, was a seminal moment in civic urban design. Olmstead’s vision drove the overall design while Vaux concentrated his attentions on bridges, buildings, and other structures within the park. The park itself was designed as a whole with every tree, pond, and bench meticulously planned.
