My first GreenStalk Garden vertical stacker is complete and positioned to receive full sunlight. For this vertical stacker, I chose crimson-red geranium as the dominant color and multicolored Violas as a secondary color. I planted it in a staggered pattern. Discover the beauty and versatility of the California Poppy! Whether you're a gardening enthusiast or just starting out, the California Poppy is a delightful addition to any garden. This flower can be either a perennial, growing from the previous year’s root base, or an annual direct from seed. For planting, consider sowing in fall in mild-winter areas and in spring in colder regions. The prime growing season is from February through September. When planting, broadcast on cultivated, well-drained soil and keep the ground moist until seeds germinate, especially if rain is absent. For large-scale sowing, use 3-4 lbs. of seeds per acre. The California Poppy attracts a variety of wildlife. You might see a profusion of small insects from beetles to tiny bees harvesting the pollen, and caterpillars eating the satin petals. Additionally, ground squirrels, rabbits, coyotes, deer, foxes, and a diverse group of birds may be spotted in the open grasslands that the poppies prefer. This flower puts on a nonstop show of bright yellow to orange color in late spring and early summer. It is also the state flower of California and holds cultural significance. California native people used the poppy plant for food, oil, and as a medical remedy. Some even used the plant’s pollen as a facial covering or cosmetic. Known by various names such as Golden Poppy, California Sunlight, and Cup of Gold, the early Spanish settlers called it "dormidera," meaning "the drowsy one," because it closes its petals during nighttime and overcast days. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Just drove back home and saw some guys (tree surgeons/gardening maintenance guys) cutting down some trees on our estate. Cherry trees that have rotten. Thought they would say no, so was a bit nervous in asking. But I got two buckets load of free wood chip 👏🏻 They also say that they have wood to get rid of. . Had you ever heard of white jamuns!??😀😀 I hadn’t ever😛😛 . When we first started terrace gardening, we had visited a nursery for saplings and the man in charge there had insisted that we buy the white jamun. It was a pretty expensive risk to take but we thought if it really did give WHITE Jamuns eventually then it would totally be worth it, so the tiny sapling came home♥️ It was a scrawny sprawler with branches shooting out radially and so we had to keep it solitary. Without much expectations, we went about composting, manuring and watering it just like the rest and in Jan this year (after about 10-11 months since we got it), buds appeared😀🤌🤌🤌 We were awed by what followed next! To witness fruition upclose was a blessing! The buds burst into tiny, hairy, golden flowers within a month and plumped up to greeness in another couple of months. The young jamuns looked like overfilled water balloons 😀😀 We weren’t sure about the maturation period but since it was called the white jamun, we decided to wait till they were white in colour😜😜 . Surprisingly one morning, early this month, we found a gnawed jamun hanging on to the twig😜😜! As usual the early bird had indeed got the worm😂😂 . The same story continued for the following couple of days with us waking up to gnawed, half eaten fruits😅 . We decided to cover up the remaining fruits with cloth till they ripen. And so finally we were able to taste this great unknown fruit😀😀 Its a bit tart but I guess that’s coz we didn’t allow it to ripen fully on the tree for fear of the birds eating them!! The end of a productive weekend in the garden and although it was a little chilly, we had no rain which was a bonus! It's that time of the year though when I always feel a mild sense of panic with the 'to do' list getting longer instead of shorter and a feeling that there just aren't enough hours in the day! If only there was an extra month between April and May, the problem would be sorted! 😂
