To learn more about Edgar, to check out any of his books in our collection, or to check out any of their movie adaptations included in Hagaman's DVD collection, please visit us either in-person or online at hagamanlibrary.org! Edgar was an American writer, poet, author, editor, and literary critic who is best known for his poetry, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story, and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre, as well as a significant contributor to the emerging genre of science fiction. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism and Gothic fiction in the United States. He anonymously published his first collection of poetry, "Tamerlane and Other Poems," while serving under an assumed name in the U.S. Army; afterward he switched his focus to prose, and spent the next several years after his discharge working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. In January 1845, he published his most well-known poem "The Raven" to instant success. He planned for years to produce his own journal, but before it began publishing, Edgar died in Baltimore in 1849, aged 40, under mysterious circumstances. The cause of his death remains unknown, and has been variously attributed to many causes including disease, alcoholism, substance abuse, and suicide. Edgar and his works influenced literature around the world, and his works appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television to this day. #communityoutreach #easthavencommunityoutreach #easthavencommunityhub #authorbirthday #edgarallanpoe #nevermore #theraven #thecaskofamontillado #tamerlane #thefallofthehouseofusher #thetelltaleheart #classicliterature #americanclassicliterature #gothicliterature #hagamandvdcollection #supportyourlocallibrary #hagamanlibrary #hagamanmemoriallibrary #easthavenct

In 1968, Boris Karloff won the Grammy Award for Best Children's Music Album for his work on the Grinch; "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" went on to inspire the 1977 TV special "Halloween is Grinch Night," 1981's "The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat," and the respective 2000 and 2018 movie adaptations starring Jim Carrey and Benedict Cumberbatch, respectively. 🎂 Happy Birthday to the late Dorothy Dandridge! To learn more about Dorothy, or to check out any of her starring roles included in Hagaman’s DVD collection, please visit us either in-person (we’ll be back on Monday, November 13th at 10am!) or online at hagamanlibrary.org. Dorothy was an American actress, singer, and the first Black film star to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, which was for her performance in 1954’s “Carmen Jones.” During her early career, she performed as a part of The Wonder Children—later re-named The Dandridge Sisters—and appeared in a succession of films, usually in uncredited roles. Because of her rejection of stereotypical Black roles, she had limited options for film roles: her first credited role was in the 1940 drama “Four Shall Die,” and had small roles in 1941’s “Lady from Louisiana” and had a specialty number in “Sun Valley Serenade.” She appeared occasionally in films and on the stage throughout the rest of the 1940s and performed as a band singer in films with Count Basie and Louis Armstrong, though her star began to rise following her performance at West Hollywood’s Mocambo nightclub: she went on to star not only in “Carmen Jones,” but 1957’s “Island in the Sun,” 1958’s “The Decks Ran Red,” and 1959’s “Porgy and Bess,” to name a few. Dorothy passed away suddenly at just 42 years old of an embolism resulting from a recently sustained fracture. Following her services, she was created and interred in the Freedom Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. #communityoutreach #easthavencommunityoutreach #eashavencommunityhub #dorothydandridge #hagamandvdcollection #goldenageofhollywood #blackhistory #carmenjones #porgyandbess #islandinthesun #countbasie #louisarmstrong #harrybelafonte #supportyourlocallibrary #hagamanlibrary #hagamanmemoriallibrary #easthavenct

🎂 Happy Birthday to the late Hedy Lamarr! To learn more about Hedy, or to check out any of her starring roles in Hagaman’s DVD collection, please visit us either in-person or online at hagamanlibrary.org. Hedy—born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler—was an Austro-Hungarian-born American actress during Hollywood’s Golden Age, as well as a scientist and inventor. After a brief early film career in Czechoslovakia, she fled from her first husband, a wealthy Austrian ammunition manufacturer, and secretly moved to Paris. Traveling to London, she met Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio head Louis B. Mayer, who offered her a movie contract in Hollywood. She starred in roles such as 1938’s “Algiers,” 1939’s “Lady of the Tropics” and 1940’s “Boom Town;” her greatest success was as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's 1949 epic “Samson and Delilah.” Inspired by her father, Hedy was primarily self-taught and would work in her spare time on various projects, which included an improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a flavored carbonated drink. After the beginning of World War II, and after reading about the enemy’s use of radio-powered torpedoes, Hedy came up with “frequency hopping,” a method of transmitting radio signals by rapidly changing the carrier’s frequency occupying a large spectral band. However, neither the US Navy nor that of any other nation were using radio-controlled torpedoes at the time, and electro-mechanical devices were soon obsolete by purely electronic controls. In the last decades of her life, the telephone became Hedy’s only means of communication with the outside world, even with her children and close friends. She often talked up to six or seven hours a day on the phone, but she spent hardly any time with anyone in person in her final years before passing away of heart disease at 85 years old. In accordance with her wishes, Hedy’s son spread her ashes in Austria's Vienna Woods. #communityoutreach #easthavencommunityoutreach #easthavencommunityhub #hedylamarr #goldenageofhollywood #wwiiinventions #hagamandvdcollection #supportyourlocallibrary #hagamanlibrary #hagamanmemoriallibrary #easthavenct

🎬🎃 On this day in movie history, the American psychological thriller "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" was released in American theatres. Based on the novel by Henry Farrell, the movie stars silver screen icons Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, not to mention it being the major film debut of Victor Buono. "Baby Jane" follows an aging former child star tormenting her paraplegic sister, a former movie star, in an old Hollywood mansion. The film was met with critical acclaim and was a box office success; it was nominated for five Academy Awards, with Bette receiving her tenth and final nomination for Best Actress. The alleged bitter Hollywood rivalry between the film's two stars, Bette and Joan, was pivotal to the film's initial success. (This was examined in the FX mini-series "Feud," created by Ryan Murphy, which is billed as telling the story of their feud during filming - and after the cameras stopped rolling.) While it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think "Halloween movies," in the years after release, critics continued to acclaim the movie for its psychologically driven black comedy and camp elements. 🍰 Happy Birthday to @jennaortega! Jenna is an American actress; having gotten her start as a child actor in roles on “Jane the Virgin” and “Stuck in the Middle,” Jenna went on to breakthrough into the horror genre in “You,” “The Babysitter: Killer Queen,” “The Fallout,” and “Scream” before being cast as Goth icon Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton’s massively popular supernatural comedy-horror series “Wednesday.” Jenna has reprised her role as Tara Carpenter in “Scream VI,” which was released in March of this year, and will go on to star in the upcoming “Miller’s Girl”—described by Jenna as "the most complex character that I've ever played"—“Alba,” “Death of a Unicorn,” and, of course, with Winona Ryder herself in “Beetlejuice 2”! We’ll also see Jenna again as “Wednesday,” as the show was renewed in January— while Jenna found filming the first season creatively unpleasant, as executive producer, she has already revealed that Season 2 will leave behind tedious romantic storylines in favor of leaning into horror, promising “we’re going to get bolder, more dark.” To learn more about Jenna, or to watch any of her starring roles included in Hagaman’s DVD collection, please either visit us in-person or online at hagamanlibrary.org! #communityoutreach #easthavencommunityoutreach #easthavencommunityhub #jennaortega #wednesday #wednesdayaddams #timburton #timburtonmovies #beetlejuice2 #taracarpenter #screamqueens #hagamandvdcollection #representationmatters #supportyourlocallibrary #hagamanlibrary #hagamanmemoriallibrary #easthavenct

🎬 On this day in movie history, "American Graffiti" - directed and co-written by George Lucas, as well as the first movie to be produced by @lucasfilm - opened in theatres across the United States. Set in Modesto, California, in 1962, "American Graffiti" is a study of the cruising and early rock 'n' roll cultures popular among George Lucas's age group at that time.
