Literally was crying as I wrote this. Like, when I decided to go back to school, it was based on one of the last conversations I had with my daddy while he was on this side of life. He’d seen my writing my entire life, but I never shared it with anyone. Then came the self-doubt, the insecurities, the anxiety that “maybe none of my work is any good.” But look at me now. With the grace of Jah, I am standing here completing my 1st year of my MFA program. GPA is brazy (already know I have an A in one class, just waiting on the official semester GPA to hit). I have shared more of my soul with my classmates than I ever have before. I have walked down the path of my childhood: the good, the bad, the hilarious, and the haunting, and I have opened every wound, so I can finally be free. To have professors that have been published in The New Yorker, that have works picked up in TV deals, that have published books, and written reviews for some of the most accredited people in the literary world. So to have THEM tell me, “YOU ARE AN AMAZING WRITER” better yet to have them say, “YOU ARE A WRITER, PERIOD” makes me want to take off into a field running. I am more confident in my purpose than I have ever been, I am writing a love letter not only to myself, but to the South Side of Chicago, to my beloved Bronzeville, to the memory of the Low End. This is for Bongo Bobby, Redd (my favorite prostitute) James, The Lees, The Campbells, 5020, my daddy, my mommy, the little girl that was made there. The little girl who was lost there, and the woman that arose from the ashes of survivng growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness. I can't wait for you all to meet them, and I know it is coming soon! That’s hard, scientific FACT! You see beauts, each of our brains are made up of approximately 100 billion nerve cells…(I mean that’s one helluva lot!!! 🤯) These cells forge connections, serving as magical conduits for the exchange of information - we call these neural pathways 🔄 Through the rhythm of repetition, pathways will emerge and strengthen 💪 , whist neglected ones fade into obscurity. 👣 Think about it as walking through a field of long grass…a couple of walks here & there mean that any pathway you forge soon grows back over and disappears. Yet keep walking through that same field everyday for months & and you will soon have a distinct trail appear. In essence, our repeated experiences cause permanent neural pathways to form and these = the formation of HABITS (which can be ✅ or ❌) .
