🪱WORM WEATHER 🪱 I've been saving this activity for the perfect rainy day, and yesterday was that day! We practiced letter names and sounds using our worms as they moved through their underground tunnels. We counted raindrops and worked on some simple addition. We read through the book, talked about all different kinds of weather, and matched items you need for specific weather. B really enjoyed building the worm tunnels with kinetic sand! Here’s a recap of week 15! Monday-my youngest… I’m not sure how ripped the towel holder out of our bathroom wall… my husband taught him how to patch up the drywall. Tuesday-my husband brought home morel mushrooms and naturally they were fried up right away! Wednesday-the tree fort is coming along!! Just have to finish the railing on the other side and it’s done! The boys were playing while dad was working on things outside. my daughter was at youth group but first before that there was an experiment fail… glass is not a good container to use.. it broke and bismuth went everywhere. Thursday-was our last day of our homeschool co-op… we had an end of year celebration… there was a science fair, readers theater, potluck with pizza, bouncy house… managed to get a photo with my oldest by her science project that was soo cool! I’ll have to blog about the process on the blog for anyone who wants to do it with their kiddos! That night was followed with taekwondo testing! My oldest got her brown belt… she’s getting closer to black! 🙌🏼 Friday- We attended a wedding and I only got one photo on my phone of my daughter but that’s it. She babysat the bride’s baby brother that day. Saturday-we were out on the soccer fields for 4 hours and were nicely sunburnt! Afterwards I went to Culver’s to squeeze in some schooling with my oldest. Sunday-we went to church and then went to my niece and nephews birthday party, got a picture of us getting back home along with one of all the cousins minus 1-together. 🪺 Some of our favorite nest books require cake to go with it (because cake makes everything better.) 🪺 Nesting, by Henry Cole 🪺 A Nest is Noisy, by Diana Hutts Aston 🪺 Mama built a Little Nest, by Jennifer Ward One of our favorite simple single layer cakes to throw together is this Almond Flour Strawberry Cake from @foolproofliving. Top with whipped cream frosting or buttercream. We made a nest out of fresh thyme sprigs and added play Robins eggs (chocolate Robin eggs leftover from Easter would also work.) -In a large bowl, mix together: 2 cups almond flour (8.4 oz., 1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon kosher salt -In a separate, small mixing bowl, whisk together: 3 large eggs at room temperature, ⅔ cup maple syrup or honey, ¼ cup olive or avocado oil, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. -Pour the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredient mixture. Coming back from a break or vacation can be hard! I’m the type of person who likes to have the house clean before vacation so we come home to a neat space. When we get home though there is unpacking, finishing laundry, grocery shopping and I’m sure other tasks that usually have to be done before we jump into the week. Here are some tips to ease in after vacation or break! 📍Don’t be afraid to take off an extra day! You may realize that tasks take longer than expected and you need more time. Rather than have a frustrated or half hearted school day, take an extra day. 📍It’s ok if all you get done is read alouds or independent reading! Reading is always a nice way to ease back into the routine. 📍If school becomes overwhelming, focus on habits. Spend the day working on your established habits to get back into the routine of the day. Instead of curriculum though play fun learning songs, watch a documentary or play a game, but make the focus less about learning and more about being back in the routine of the day! ***also, I recommend grocery pickup 😂 I went in the store and 😰😴 What would you recommend after a vacation or long break! I’m never going up those stairs again! I’m not a fan of heights and as you get to the top, the stairs get narrower circling this empty space. Now, the top make a prettier photos of the stairs downwards but I chose to hang onto to the rail rather than attempting a photo (life vs photo). It’s one of those moments when you’re terrified but you have no choice but to do it because there is no other way. Nobody was going to carry me down those stairs! But I’m making a note of not going up towers again! If you’ve been here for awhile, you know we LOVE nature! As a child my parents always made it a huge part of our daily life and as I grew up the love for nature always remained. I always told Jeff if we have kids I will foster that connection to nature and have our kids love the outdoors. In 2017 we started to visit the garden with the girls at an age I felt they could truly explore and appreciate this space. We were inspired by the butterfly garden which later turned into us raising monarchs! But our visits can be seen on our social media and flooded in my phone albums. We were asked in March to come in for an interview to be highlighted in the “Member Spotlight” and did we all have so much to share about the garden! We were told our article would be featured in April which is so special because it’s Earth Month! If you know our girls they always want to bring friends to the garden to explore and share their favorite spots and flowers! Your love of all things arts and crafts continues to amaze us, but this year we’ve also been able to see how gifted you are with numbers as you’ve learned to add and subtract like a pro. It has also been so impressive teaching you to read. You are so good at sounding out words you don’t know, because you aren’t afraid to get it wrong in your pursuit to get it right. This is such an important skill that we know God gave you, and it will serve you well for your whole life. As fun as it has been teaching you math and reading and all about the world, our favorite thing to watch you learn is watching you learn about Jesus and watching you learn how to be a good friend. Time spent with a thing or a subject leads to more questions, more research, and more learning. That includes art mediums and tools of the craft. My brother, who was an artist, used to tell me that the only difference between my level of art ability and his (which was extraordinary) was that he dedicated more time to explore and practice. Susana had been experiencing bullying from her classmates since she began 6th grade in 2019 at a public school in Nebraska. The bullying worsened, and near the end of the year, Susana was physically attacked by one of her classmates. According to her mom, Susana’s face was left disfigured after the attack, almost unrecognizable. RECYCLED EGG CARTON SEED PAPER - Making and planting seed paper is always a fun garden project for kids. This year we up-cycled some paper egg carton and turned them into seed paper to add to our gardens. 🌸 Tear up an egg carton and put into a jar or bowl. Fill with water and let sit over night. 🌺 Pour softened pieces and water into a blender and blend into a paste. 🌸 Sprinkle in some flower seeds. Wildflower or milkweed work great. 🌺 Squeeze out excess water and press flat onto a screen or thin towel. 🌸 Let dry, flipping over after a day or so. May take longer if you had more water in your paste. 🌺 Once dry, cut into fun shapes (optional), saving the scraps to also use. 🌸 Lay paper pieces flat on soil, covering with a light layer. We always talk about materials for the kids, but we moms need resources and materials, too! Earlier this year I got myself a supply cart and it’s been so helpful in keeping me organized! On the top I keep all my supplies like markers, highlighters, my sprocket printer, transparent sticky notes and more. In the second bin I keep upcoming read alouds and notebooks I use to plan upcoming resources. The last bin holds upcoming resources for new unit studies. Often times it’s books or new resources that I’ve purchased in advance. How do you keep your things organized?

One of our favorite things (there are so many!) about teaching at the co-op is the freedom we have to structure our units and learning around our kids' interests. Our chicken unit was inspired by some duck eggs (picture 2) we found on a walk as we neared the end of our space unit. Within a few days, we were connected with a local farm and we had fertilized eggs to incubate and study! DIY ROOT VIEWER 🥕 🥕 There a few plastic root viewer planters on the market, but why not just make your own? This milk carton planters allows you to observe the root growth of your vegetables, so you can record your findings! A great spring/summer garden project. 🥕 We took a milk carton and cut off the top and the front, leaving an edge around the perimeter. Then we took some plastic wrap and secured it to the edge with hot glue. Then we filled it with potting soil, planted some carrot seeds, and waited. (Be sure to plant enough seeds near the front, so you can observe the roots grow more easily and water regularly). 🐋 ‘WH’ FOR WHALE 🐋 Continuing on with looking at whales, William has been busy with lots of different activities.. We spoke for a long time about the fact that although blue whales are so big, they eat tiny plankton.. ( cue lots of questions about sponge bob 🤣.. ).. William then sorted through his flash cards that I had mixed up to see if he could find all of the cetaceans and match them to his sheet. After he had finished, we looked at the word whale.. namely the ‘wh’ sound.. and William used his chalk board to write down as many words as he could beginning with ‘wh’.. We finished off with a little bit of painting, where Williams painted some blue whales diving through the ocean layers..
