The large galaxy of over 100 billion stars has well-defined spiral arms, similar to our own Milky Way. One of the brightest members of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, M100, also known as NGC 4321 is 56 million light-years distant toward the well-groomed constellation Coma Berenices. In this telescopic image, the face-on grand design spiral shares a nearly 1 degree wide field-of-view with slightly less conspicuous edge-on spiral NGC 4312 (at upper right). The 21 hour long equivalent exposure from a dark sky site near Flagstaff, Arizona, planet Earth, reveals M100’s bright blue star clusters and intricate winding dust lanes which are hallmarks of this class of galaxies. My Target was: NGC 5907 - The SplinterGalaxy This is a cropped image The image is 20 x 120 RGB subs Antlia RGB filters RGB Palette The Set up.... Location – my Bortle 8 backyard Celestron CGX-L mount and the Sky-Watcher EvoStar 150DX refactor with the standard Sky-Watcher 0.77 reducer/flattener (924mm focal length at F/6.2). The imaging camera was the ZWO 2600mm binned 2x2 with the Antlia RGB filters in the ZWO 7 position 2 inch filter wheel. The image scale was 87 by 58 arc-minutes with the image resolution of approximately 0.84 arc-seconds per pixel. The image was up-sampled to 1x1 resolution and drizzle x 1 with the PixInsight WBPP process. The camera gain was set to 100 with the offset at 30. The camera was cooled to 0 degrees C. The guiding was with the Stellarvue SV60ED (60mm aperture, 330 focal length at F/5.5) and the ZWO-174 mini. The images were captured with Sequence Generator Pro. Bias and flats were applied. The subs were stacked using the PixInsight Weighted Batch PreProcessing (WBPP) script. Processed with PixInsight and PhotoShop. Like a number of other members of this cluster, it is situated in the southern part of constellation Coma Berenices. M100 was discovered in 1781, and is one of the brightest member galaxies of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies. M100 is a spiral galaxy, like our Milky Way, and tilted nearly face-on as seen from earth. It resides at a distance of 56 million light-years from Earth. M100 is among the first spiral galaxies to be discovered. The galaxy has two prominent arms of bright blue stars and several fainter arms. The blue stars in the arms are young hot and massive stars which formed recently from density perturbations caused by interactions with neighboring galaxies which are lying just outside our image. Despite its nearly perfect symmetric outline, this galaxy appears slightly asymmetric, as on the southern (lower) side of the nucleus more (or brighter) young stars have formed.
