#IGfilmschool w/ The Vast Of Night (2020)⁣ ⁣ No doubt most of you have heard of or seen the awesome shot in the middle of this movie, when the camera takes a minute to speed through the entirety of a small New Mexico town, showing you the layout and the perimeters. ⁣ ⁣ As amazing and iconic as that shot was, it was motivated by script. Cool shots mean nothing if they come out of left field. ⁣ ⁣ That’s why a smart storyteller will look to their script first to help them brainstorm what stylish shots they can add. ⁣ ⁣ In this case, the director quite possibly picked up on a part of the script EARLIER where the main character mentions an RC car. ⁣ ⁣ This cue allowed the storytellers to introduce a shot that “feels” like an actual RC car is following them. ⁣ ⁣ Boom. ⁣ ⁣ Script > motivated camera > which setup the awesome shot you see later. ⁣ That DEF “razzes my berries.” ⁣ Have you seen the shot I’m talking about? I’m not going to show you it here. 😉 But catch the flick on @amazonprime⁣ ⁣ You guys catch the other storytelling tricks in this movie?

So, let's put it together... Here, side by side are the primary colors for additive and subtractive color mixing. Note that in both cases the secondary colors created by mixing are the opposite system's primaries. Fun stuff! #igfilmschool #learnlighting #learncinematography #colortheory #jayholbendotcomlearn

8/19/2016, 9:30:00 PM

Since yesterday seemed to spark some interest, let's look at the flip-side of color: subtractive color mixing. In additive color mixing, each source of light adds to the total brightness and brings the result closer to white. In subtractive color mixing, each mix of pigments or addition of a filter reduces the overall brightness and brings the result closer to black (absence of light). In this image, we start with white light on the left (Red, Green and Blue) which first passes through a yellow filter. This stops the blue light from passing through and the result is only red and green make it through. Red + green light = yellow (see yesterday's post). Then we add a magenta filter, which stops the green light from passing through and we are left with only red. Finally we place a cyan filter, which stops red and we're left with no light at all. The bottom of the image is an actual photograph of this phenomenon. Notice that the overall brightness of the light drops with each filter - because in a subtractive process we're stopping wavelengths of light so the light that passes through is dimmer. The same is true when you mix pigments, the addition of each pigment brings the overall total closer to black. Camera color filters or lighting filters (gels) work on the same principle. #learncinematography #learnlighting #cinematography #igfilmschool #jayholbendotcomlearn

I was very proud of this photo - it's physics in action! As kids, we're taught that our primary paint colors are red, blue and yellow. We're LIED to. Flat out lies. They're actually magenta, cyan and yellow. I think educators are afraid kids won't be able to deal with words like "magenta" and "cyan" so they simplify and LIE. This image demonstrates additive color mixing with near primary colors of red, green and blue, which in light mix to create white. You can also see the mixes here that create the pigment primaries: green + red = yellow; red + blue = magenta; blue + green = cyan. This isn't computer generated, it's an actual photograph of physics in action! Understanding the interrelationship between additive and subtractive (pigments) color mixing is a key to controlling color in your images. #colorscience #truth #physics #igfilmschool #learnlighting #photography #cinematography #learncinematography #jayholbendotcomlearn

Earlier this week I addressed a question by @ritadamiron about estimating the time to shoot each scene. This brought up the general concept of scheduling and I thought I'd expand on that a bit. This image is of a standard breakdown sheet and it's the first step in creating a schedule, which must be done before a budget can be created. One of these sheets is generated for every scene in a film. There are software programs to assist with this, but I'm old school and mostly still do it by hand. The idea is that you breakdown every scene in the script and denote anything that could cost money or take time. General information goes at the top of the form, but the meat-and-potatoes is in the table below. Here you list all of the actors in the scene - including non-speaking and extras (or atmos; atmosphere). You list special wardrobe, makeup, effects, animals, vehicles, stunts, set dressing, props - ANYTHING that costs money (which is, mostly, EVERYTHING). Some things may not be listed in the script. In scene 27, the writer notes that Jack is in a tuxedo. Although it isn't specified, he's still in the tux in scenes 28-42. That's important to note. Also, the jacket rips in scene 38 - so you know doubles in wardrobe are very necessary. Someone gets hurt and has a visible wound? That goes in makeup. Someone falls down a flight of stairs? Stunts. Jack jumps on a city bus: vehicles. On the bus is a group of women on a bachelorette scavenger hunt: that goes into extras and wardrobe (fancy bachelorette attire) and props (all the crazy stuff bachelorette party girls carry). Every scene. This creates a "bible" for everything that will cost money or time and will become the structure behind your schedule. A lot of this information gets transcribed into production documents as well. Start this process and you're on your way to creating a budget. #preproduction #lineproducing #producing #assistantdirector #production #filmmaking #learnfilm #igfilmschool #breakdown #schedule #budget #jayholbendotcomlearn

8/14/2016, 9:41:09 PM

This'll be a long one - so read the follow up comments... @ritadamiron asked how she can know how long a scene will take to shoot. In the interest of trying to schedule a project, it's crucial to budget enough time for each scene. Unfortunately, it's a very complex discussion. In the most simplistic terms: you have 10 days to shoot a 100 page script so you must average 10 pages per day. That averages out to a page an hour, with some breathing room. If you're 4 hours into the day and you haven't completed 4 pages, you know you're in trouble. But, of course, it's much more complicated than that. Two characters having a general conversation in a room is, typically, easy. The addition of each character thereafter increases potential coverage logarithmically. If you have two characters, you have one eyeline and two directions of coverage (not including master or inserts). A third actor increases your potential direction of coverage to 6 (A to B, B to A, B to C, C to B, A to C, C to A). So time to shoot also increases logarithmically. 4 characters is 12 potential directions of coverage. So the more characters in a scene, potentially, the longer it takes to shoot. Then there's logistics of kids or animals - animals especially - which take longer to work with. Depending on the training of the animal, figure a minimum of 10:1 ratio. What might take 1 hour, normally to shoot, with animals can now take 10. If the camera moves, that increases time to shoot. Starting with handheld then dolly then crane. They take time. Time to setup, time to rehearse and time to execute, accounting for logistical problems. Are there stunts? Special effects? Nudity? Sex? Fighting? All of that takes a LOT of time. Stunts, in a big crowd, with animals and moving camera? You could spend a week on a single minute of film. How do you know how much time each of those things adds? Experience. Unfortunately, that's all. You can ask people who have done it; ask your crew; guess - but only experience will really inform you best. (CONTINUED IN COMMENTS BELOW) #learnfilm #igfilmschool #holbenq #jayholbendotcomlearn

#igfilmschool A seriously abridged list of departments and individuals who work under the director - but a sampling of the director's key team. I missed wardrobe / makeup / hair in this list - and elected not to include so many more. The director is the general; the captain of the ship; the leader of the band. It is the one person who brings together all the talents, skills and visions of everyone else into a cohesive whole! Also, other than the key producer(s), the one individual who shepherds the project from inception to final release. It's extremely rare to have more than one director on a film, as this - by definition - goes against the concept of one voice leading the pack. Great directors have a "signature" style that is identifiable from film to film. #directing #filmmaking #learnfilm #stevenspielberg #alfredhitchcock #jayholbendotcomlearn

I've been asked about this so many times... And it's always so obvious when a resume comes in from a newbie, fresh out of school, because they're often formatted completely wrong. The format is simple, concise, effective. No frills. Don't ever make shows up. Don't ever say you were on a show that you weren't and never say you did a job that you didn't. That being said, if your name made it to the callsheet, if you worked a day, it's fair game for the resume. By "one job" I mean if you're applying to be a 2nd AC, don't put art department PA credits and cinematographer and director credits on the same resume. Keep it to the same department and it's not a good idea to present credits significantly higher than the position you're applying for. If it's a PA resume, no one wants to see producer and director credits, they'll know you're an amateur. If you only have two credits - then only list two! Then any school, special skills or even a BRIEF statement about what makes you the right candidate can help. Resumes are an absolute necessity, but often not requested if you've been recommend by a trusted source, which is where most hires come from. But if asked for, you better have one! #igfilmschool #resume #getwork #filmbiz #filmcrew #setlife #learnfilm #jayholbendotcomlearn

#cinecabulary yeah... More apertures!! (One more after this!) if you look closely at all my educational posts, you'll see a little category icon in the upper right-hand corner. In this case, it's a camera. The color of that icon denotes the level of tip, term or technique I'm discussing. Green = beginner, yellow = intermediate and red = advanced/professional. This post delves a bit into history of apertures, their relationships to each other and what is a T-stop. Why do we have T-stops? In lenses designed for still cameras, the variance between a particular stop on one lens compared to another wasn't so important. In cinema, when we edit together one lens right next to another, consistency became a bigger issue. We had to make sure that 2.8 meant the same exposure on every lens and every camera, hence the T (transmission) stop was created: a more precise f-stop that takes actual transmission of light (therefore any loss of light) through that particular lens. #learnfilm #learncinematography #lenses #Aperture #igfilmschool #jayholbendotcomlearn

NOTE: F represents the NUMERATOR in a fraction, the stop number is the denomenator. My apologies (thanks @barry_f82 for pointing out my error). #cinecabulary you'd think a topic like "Aperture" would be simple, but even the ubiquitous iris inside every camera is a subject that requires further examination. Here's a look at f-stop numbers and the Aperture openings they represent. #igfilmschool #learnfilm #learncinematography #photographybasics #camera #Aperture #iris #jayholbendotcomlearn

#cinecabulary Aperture (also called iris or stop). The first line of control of light. Most typically found inside the lens, but can be inside the camera in some systems. Like the pupil of your eye, the Aperture can open or close to let in more or less light. #igfilmschool #cinematography #photographybasics #exposuretriangle #exposure #aperture #learnfilm #jayholbendotcomlearn
